Mariner's Guide to Nautical Information
Mariner's Guide to Nautical Information
by Priscilla Travis
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £29.50

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent on board reference with personal wisdom, 6 Jan. 2013

This is a quality book both in content and publisher's finish. The photographs are excellent. The reference material is easy to read, concise yet quite adequate. Not only does the content have clarity but the author also frequently adds to the information with her own personal experience and wisdom.

According to the preface, she has logged some 85,000 sea miles, and sails her own 42ft steel pilothouse cutter. She holds a 100 ton Coastguard Master's Licence and sails mostly solo around British Isles, Norway, Faroe islands.

Definitely a useful onboard reference and a pleasant leisure read just for its own merits.

Astro Navigation Made Easy: Using a Pocket Calculator
Astro Navigation Made Easy: Using a Pocket Calculator
by Francois Meyrier
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Very detailed with mathematical approach, 6 Jan. 2013
The diagrams and equations and how to use the calculator rather than sight reduction tables are good. The diagrams are some of the best. I would suggest that this book is a big jump for beginners. It is very compressed in its content and could be read easier if the pages were bigger. The small size of the book makes reading the information more difficult.Like most celestial navigation books it gets into too much detail of the more complicated sights and methods before it shows the simpler Noon and Polaris sights which would aid understanding. For some reason all the books do that and makes the beginner's task more difficult.

Having mastered most of the subject I have gone back and used the book for more detailed reference. I have had to use about five other books to get control of the subject. I don't trust cookbook understanding of just filling in forms and wanted more of the obvious geometry which is not that difficult but made so by most books having inadequate diagrams or skipping steps. Maybe I will write my own after this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oldman the real Pianist, 14 Mar. 2012
This review is from: Immortal Beloved [DVD] (DVD)
Just to add my own comment. Gary Oldman is brilliant in this film which captures the essential drama of Beethoven's life. No need to get hung up on historical details.

However one truth that is missed over. Gary Oldman is an accomplished classical pianist. He is actually playing Beethoven.

I saw a brief interview with him and his mother at the time of the film's release and he revealed his own playing when he had to correct people who told him he had done a wonderful job of miming the playing!

He had to correct them, "It was me playing!"

How to Sail Around the World: Advice and Ideas for Voyaging Under Sail
How to Sail Around the World: Advice and Ideas for Voyaging Under Sail

5.0 out of 5 stars Hal Roth on Voyaging under Sail, 9 Nov. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Hal Roth was a master seaman. In this book, he has condensed years of wisdom and technique in his book on Voyaging under Sail. His prose is clear and reduced to essentials; he has carefully considered many of his techniques and the text explains and reads almost like step by step procedures while being a joy to read. The book may be co-titled 'how to sail around the world' but Hal Roth's wisdom and methods will apply to any coastal sail. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solo Sailing, 21 July 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent book for careful preparation and technique. It contains detailed history of solo sailers on their practical success and failures along with valuable insights on the psychology of solo sailing.

The book also includes valuable checklists for preparation which is of value not just to the solo sailor but the short-handed sailor who often has passengers of crew with little expertise so he is virtually single-handing while with the responsibility for others.
