1.0 out of 5 stars Kindle Edition Very Poor, 11 Nov. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is about the Kindle version of LoTR, and doesn't have much to say about the quality of the book - though the fact that this is probably the sixth edition I've bought probably tells you what I think about that.
The disappointment here is the huge number of misprints in this edition. It's especially galling when you read the forward about how much care was taken to produce a definitive text for the anniversary edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fiddly to use, no real guidance, 21 Oct. 2010
Certainly good value, but tricky to apply. If you're confident (and dexterous!) a reasonable buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Value, and smart too., 21 Oct. 2010
This would get five stars if it was easier to figure out what it fits - I was lucky, my camera fits perfectly. Cheap, quite stylish, does what it says on the tin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reassuring, but..., 21 Oct. 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Collins have made a brave attempt here to differentiate this hefty and handsome book from the convenience of typing "Definition: X" into google. It has the same benefits, and the same drawbacks, as a good encyclopaedia in the days of Wikipedia: the physical weight gives its entries metaphorical weight - I'd be more inclined to trust the definitions here, and they are more detailed, it allows for synchronicity - you can end up centuries and continents away from the word you were looking for. On the downside, though, the articles, fascinating as they are, are set in type, if not in stone. They won't be updated until the next published edition, if there is one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smith's First and Last Book, 21 Aug. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the book which made Smith's name, and in which he first mentioned the much-misunderstood "Invisible Hand". It's essential reading as an antidote to the "101-ist" perception of Smith as a supporter of unfettered capitalism. It starts from the observation that we all feel sympathy for the suffering of others, and joy in their joy, and explores how society is best ordered to maximise sharing benefits with all.

This was also Smith's last book - he worked on the revised edition until just before his death.

A bonus in this edition, and one worth paying the price of the book for, is Amyrata Sen's introduction, which stands as a better defence of Smith than any amount of backhanded compliments showered on him by the apologists of Wall Street.

The Saint: Saint Overboard: AND The Saint Plays with Fire (BBC Radio Crimes)
The Saint: Saint Overboard: AND The Saint Plays with Fire (BBC Radio Crimes)
by Charteris Leslie
Edition: Audio CD

4.0 out of 5 stars Return of an Old Friend, 19 Aug. 2010
I first heard of the Saint in the 70's, through reruns of the Roger Moore TV series, and then the original Leslie Charteris stories.
This production brought back the knight errant, a figure second only to Raffles as a former criminal doing good.
The radio adaptions suit the stories well, rattling yarns with a dash of humour.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, best give this a miss, 19 Aug. 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I thought this might be an inexpensive alternative to an iPod for gym or travelling use, but I'm afraid that it isn't inexpensive, it's cheap. Fiddly interface, a plasticky feel, and packaging that's harder to get into than Fort Knox.

Avoid.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Satisfactory Conclusion., 19 Aug. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I wish I'd managed to wait until this volume came out, but I had to read the ending of the Planetary saga as soon as I could. The value of the Absolute Edition is in the heft - it will sit nicely on my bookcase for those nights when I feel like reading through the whole story. Of course, now I have to buy volume one...

If you're coming to the story fresh with this volume, you should have the same thought - get volume one first. If you're waiting to see how the story comes out, I won't spoil it. I will say how glad I was that it didn't become a story of revenge, but one of redemption - in a very real sense.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just for the girls..., 19 Aug. 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have to admit that I love this - a good choice of songs, and a much smoother interface than the old Sing Star for PS that I've used in the past.

If there's a niggle, it's that this only comes with one microphone, and you'll want at least two for a proper girls night in - or a boys night in, if it comes to that.

Simple Knitting
Simple Knitting

5.0 out of 5 stars Knit to be taken lightly..., 19 Aug. 2010
This review is from: Simple Knitting (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This book is beautifully presented and photographed. It has easy to understand instructions, and a fantastic stitch dictionary, showing a variety of textures.
The 20 projects teach new techniques as the reader progresses, starting with the very basics and going on to teach Fair Isle knitting, etc.
A beginner knitter friend said "If I'd got this as my first knitting book, I would have started with the first project and worked my way through them all to teach myself"

Slight niggle: some of the terminology is slightly unusual and I think there is a mistake in one of the charts.
