4.0 out of 5 stars Hot Gimmick this is NOT!, 19 April 2009
This review is from: Honey Hunt, Volume 1 (Paperback)
I have been reading this in Shojo beat and so far, impressed.

The authors other works, like Hot Gimmick (in my opinion) lacked because the author did not know how to handle her characters, more less what to do with them. In Honey Hunt, the author wisely keeps the romance in the background (but still very much there) and instead focuses on the growth of the main character. In some instances, the story line reminds of Paradise Kiss, in which the main character starts as a shy introverted character who really has no idea who they really are or what they want in life.

The main charater has to face many hardships--right from the first volume--tossed aside by her parents, betrayed by her crush and thrown out of her home. Her desperation to prove herself is admirable, there is nothing remarkable or special about her but there is a certain *something* she has.

Fans of Hot gimmick, or tokyo boys and girls--give this a go--but be warned, this is not a focus on romance (of course, there are potential lovers but its not the main thing) as her other works. This is a character driven piece.

5.0 out of 5 stars The mark of greatness, 19 April 2009
The first three Runaway books should be on every shelf (comic collector or not). The final part of this 'arc' is heartbreaking/funny and unexpected. Its rare to see a comic where the 'bad' and 'good' guys are equally sympathised with (and loved!). In some ways I wish the books had ended at number three, because the ending is so perfect--but another part of me wants to scream--MORE! MORE! Because I fell in love with these characters so much (the latter wish came true), while the rest of Runaways is still stunning and jaw dropping--its never going to beat this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvel madness, 19 April 2009

This was the first Brian K V. book I got into, since then I have adored all of his stuff, his dialogue is quirky and fresh and his characters observations are interesting, thought provoking and funny. The first three Runaways novels will be hard to top, nothing can come as close to them (Joss Whedon's run certianly comes close mind). The only weakness with this run is possibly the new character, Victor is not nearly as interesting as his fellow Runaways (or his later team mates), he is a weaker character-however he nicely *SPOILER* fits into Alex's role as the hero worshipper/gamer/geek character. His most interesting character points are his cloudy future and his religious tendecendies.

Book four isn't my favorite book, by no means--but it helps the Runaways find their feet again and (if you look closely) the book is ridden with 'handy hints of whats to come' plot pieces. Solid writing as always.

4.0 out of 5 stars CLAMPS animecomes to dvd, 23 Jan 2009
A thrilling anime by the one and only CLAMP, the dubbing is a little ununsal-but a vast improvement from the Japanese dub. Aside from a few inconsitences, like Kurogane using Fai's name which I wished had been kept more intact. The box art is beautiful and there is plenty of extras on the dvd.

This review is from: B.O.D.Y., Volume 2 (Paperback)
Not by any means badly drawn or written, BODY is simply too...predictable. Its nothing new or exciting. So far its quite generic. If your new to shojo romance, give it a go, but if your an avid reader, this is nothing unique.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Com comedy, 23 Jan 2009

Still fresh with plenty of silly moments, the girl-next door story seems ciched and done to death--but volume 8 throws in plenty of comedy moments. Lovely complex is a nice change from seeing a romantic shojo manga that isn't obbessed with sex and dark past drama, its very well written.

3.0 out of 5 stars Vampire mangas, 23 Jan 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Obviously inspired by Hellsing, the plotline is fast paced and quite addictive, yet strangely, the main character has barely any spotlight anymore. One of the other better characters, Tres, has also been pushed into the background leaving the female main characrter to fillout most of the plot--which isn't a bad thing, it just seems weird that a supporting character gets the most dialogue. The is probably because the orignal manga-ka died so the story needs to be recollected and re-delevoped, it seems a little all over the place at the moment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kingdom Hearts, 23 Jan 2009

It seems the rest of this manga will never get licensed any time soon, so please be wary before buying this--as its nowhere near to completion. As always mangas based on games dwindle in story where gameplay ussually takes over--but there is plenty of amusement here for fans. You will appreicate this manga much more if you have played the game but as a standalone manga its nothing special. The artwork is nice but sometimes a little too cartoony and bubbly (if you are looking for something a little more serious).

5.0 out of 5 stars Brian K. Vaughan is back!, 23 Jan 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Faith is not my favorite Buffy character, so its surprising that an entire book (minus the last chapter) is dedicated to her story after Season 7. Faith is a main character, but not as much as Willow and Xander abit to Buffy.

In the hands of Brian K. Vaughan Faith gets the limelight and shines it well. The story is fast paced, refreshing-with a sassy badguy (I mean girl!) that keeps the reader entertained despite Buffy not being at the wheel. The fact that the story jumps to Faith is actullay a nice break, and fleshes out some well deserved background pieces for Giles as well--which ultimately leaves Buffy feeling even more isolated--nice one!

One thing....Amy Winehouse?

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book, 18 Jan 2009

'There are a great many strange things in the world.

But no matter how odd... How incredible something may be...

If a human does not touch it... If a human does not see it... If a human is not involved with it...

It is simply a phenomenon. Simply a matter that will fade with time.

Humans. Mankind. Homo sapiens.

Humans are the most profoundly mysterious living things in the world!'

This novel set within the series was written by Nisio Isin and published in Japan on August 1, 2006. NISIOISIN, the author of The Kubikiri Cycle and Death Note: Another Note the novel. The hardcover looks amazing and inside it has orignal artwork by CLAMP.

There are three short stories in this book--all of which are wonderfully written. The first one was actullay included as a stand-alone episode in the anime sereis. In this tale Watanuki meets a woman who has made a fascinating choice in regards to her own happiness and the cost she is wiling to pay.

The second story has Watanuki helping a classmate when he is alerted to a girl who is receiving message from her recently deceased friend. Riddled with guilt, the girl is being told to punish herself. Watanuki tries to solve the problem in time to put both the deceased and the girl's guilt to rest. But is it a case of a ghost or merely a selfish desire manifesting itself? Again NISIOISIN challenges not only the main character, Watanuki, but also the reader's concepts of perception and logic. Yuko comes across as mysterious yet merciless as ever in these tales and it makes her even more enigmatic than usual.

The final tale is perhaps the most unsettling. But I won't give anything away...

Fans of XXXholic need to buy this book!
