5.0 out of 5 stars Fellini's Roma brought up to date., 30 Jan 2014

This review is from: The Great Beauty [DVD] (DVD)
A gripping rendition of the futility of life amongst Rome's urban élite, in which nothing very much happens, but you can't tear your eyes away. This is a masterclass with Toni Servillo at his best. I loved the child "painter", and the disappearing giraffe! If you enjoyed "the Consequences of love", you'll love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Dylan's best, 3 Oct 2013

This was a great song in the '60s and it still is. Dylan's untutored voice and plaintive lyrics stand the test of time better than most, and this is one of the best songs from his best album ever.

Easy readers are just that. These are entertaining stories about Montalbano that you don't need to keep thumbing through the dictionary to read. Most enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good value, 20 Sep 2013

I've never used a bat detector before, so I didn't want to spend too much money. There was a problem at first, but the manufacturer's support was brilliant, and I'm now able to detect crickets and grasshoppers that I haven't heard for years! Don't just think of it as a bat detector (though it does that too), this is a great tool for the naturalist. Brilliant!

1.0 out of 5 stars Less than a child's toy, 13 Sep 2013
I bought my VMS-001 from another supplier after seeing one (which I now realise must have been the VMS-004) demonstrated.
Although I was assured that the microscope was compatible with both Mac and PC, the software comes on a mini-disk. Putting this into a Mac's CD slot is known to be a quick way of destroying your computer, so I searched the website and downloaded the latest version of the software, only to find that it's not compatible with recent versions of OSX. If you have anything later than Leopard, then forget it! I eventually discovered that Photo Booth recognises the camera, but the 640x480 images are grainy and definitely dated. At anything but the lowest magnification the built in stand is about as stable as a jelly, and tends to topple over. The single focus/magnification wheel is rather soft, so sharp focussing is difficult. I cobbled together an adapter to fit it to my copying stand so that I could focus from the stand, and that gave better results. A built in tripod thread would solve this problem easily.
I fear that giving this toy to a child would be enough to put him or her off the wonders of the microscopic living world for ever, though it's probably OK for looking at flat objects like stamps or coins where depth of field is not important.

The Lunar Men: The Friends Who Made the Future 1730-1810
The Lunar Men: The Friends Who Made the Future 1730-1810
by Jenny Uglow
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.74

2.0 out of 5 stars Tedious story of Fascinating lives, 2 Jun 2013
The Lunar Society included some of the most significant and interesting characters in British history, and their activities changed Britain and the rest of the world to an extent that could not have been imagined at the time. Although thin on science, Jenny Uglow has produced a social history telling everything you could wish to know about the lives of the key characters, and much, much more. She is easily sidetracked from her main theme and includes lashings of irrelevant trivia. If the book were half as long, it would be twice as good, but as it is she has made a potentially gripping story almost unreadable.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a map..., 7 May 2013

When buying a map, the most important criterion is scale. I used this map on a recent trip to Piemonte and found it very useful for navigating by in the car, even when my satnav was getting confused, but for a walking trip, you would really need a much larger scale. However, the price was good and the area covered meant that I only had to take the one map with me on the plane.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vegetation explained, 7 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
One of the first books on British vegetation that I read was the outstanding book by Sir Arthur Tansley, "Britain's Green Mantle" (2nd ed 1968, revised and updated by Michael Proctor. This in itself was an abridged version of Tansley's 1939 two-volume "British Isles and their Vegetation". Our vegetation has changed significantly during the ensuing years, not usually for the better, and while knowledge and understanding of our vegetation has increased as well, the information is not always readily accessible to the general reader. The present volume is therefore doubly welcome in bringing a much needed update to the subject, together with a useful list of references for further reading. However, when we consider that the recently published "New Naturalist" just on Woodlands was a hundred pages longer than this volume, it is impossible to escape the suspicion that the subject has perforce been treated a little superficially. None the less, the author writes with the authority gained from a lifetime of study of the British vegetation, and, as expected, the illustrations are superb (if somewhat biased to the south-west of England), producing a book that is well worth reading and then dipping into time and time again over the coming years.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit clunky, but it works, 19 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've used a couple of applications for copying audio to my Mac over the years, and a commercial application for recordingTV from a USB receiver, so I was expecting something with the usual record/playback-pause buttons rather than the unfriendly and non-intuitive drop down menus and rather strange window to click on to stop recording (Very easy to click in here by accident and then have to start all over again!). Then there is no in-app editing; instead you have to launch another application which I eventually discovered on the accompanying disk. Having used the recommended settings I found that a 90 minute film would not fit onto a standard single layer DVD so there's a big trade off between file size and quality. I wouldn't recommend using this to copy material from old videos if you could go out and buy new DVDs for just a few pounds more, but if you have irreplaceable material you want to keep then it's probably worth the efffort to learn to use it.
