Wuthering Heights, 4 Mar 2012
The mood of the book punctuates this film in a way that no other adaption I have seen does... The isolation of the characters and how this acts as a catalyst to their extreme emotions has been utterly captured by Andrea Arnold.
Other versions may stick to the plot more closely, yet this is a truer reflection of the essence of the book, it draws you into the bleak world of the Yorkshire moors, away from civilization, to the world of storm. The world of Cathy and Heathcliff, which is almost supernatural...
The actors are the right ages in this adaption and the young Cathy and Heathcliff deliver amazing performances. This is rounded out with Kaya Scodelario and James Hawson who are also superb. The actor playing Hindley is also fantastic.
This film is quietly majestic. It may well not be what you expect, not everyone will like it. Yet its emotional impact is great.
Wuthering Heights has long been amongst my favourite novels. If you want a film that captures the wild spirit of Bronte's book, then here you have it...
