You really get a sense of the fear that must have coursed through the streets of Moscow under Stalin's reign, on the run up towards World War II. Korolev is a principled protagonist at the mercy of circumstance and propelled along a road that has twists turns and plenty of potholes. William Ryan really conjures up the sights and sounds of the Soviet State caught in the midst of a purge, so much so that you can almost smell the bodies of the spectators and hear the roar of the crowd at the game between Spartak and Dinamo. Great attention to detail and good pacing make this a rattling read.

I remember the '70's. It was this funny in retrospect and the clothes were that dreadfull. This reinforces Will Ferrels position as one of the funniest guys around at the moment. Definitely one to savour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top of the heap in a very crowded genre., 28 Mar 2005

No the AI and graphics aren't upto Far Cry/Half Life 2, but this isn't a solo game. The real fun of the game is the use of the very simple squad controls. It is quite amusing to hear your squamates tell you 'no way' when you try to order them on a suicide mission. Early on you have the tendency to try to lead from the front, but the game ratchets up the difficulty as you progress, so that if you don't use your personnel correctly your mission is jeapodised. It is less linear than the MOH series, all of which I own and is right up there with Call of Duty as the best WW2 shooter out there. To compare it with Far Cry or Half Life 2 is unfair as they are looking to achieve something different from BIA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Second Call worth a whirl, 15 Oct 2004
Its more of the same from the expansion pack to the awesome Call of Duty. This time you get to man the machine guns on a Flying Fortress, turn a flame thrower on the opposition, call in artillery strikes and pick up and deploy light machine guns. its fun and at times frantic. You start off as an American Paratrooper at the Battle of the Bulge, through parachuting in over occupied territory in Holland with the Dutch Resistance and covert opertations with the SAS as a Brit. To driving tanks and assualting well dug in enemy positions in the Russian Campaign. Call of Pacific Duty or Call of Duty. Vietnam anyone?

5.0 out of 5 stars High standards maintained, 25 Sep 2004
I'm halfway through the single player missions on this expansion pack and it doesn't disappoint. There are new weapons to master, some great settings, the AI isn't that predicatable all making it a welcome addition to last years FPS of the year. Some times you have to adopt a sneaky, slowly slowly approach and othertimes its a gung-ho charge that will get the results. Have fun. It will keep you amused for a while.

This review is from: Call of Duty (PC CD) (Video Game)
And it is. There is no dwell, no jerkiness as in MOH, its smoother than Mr Smooth the smooth snake. But don't bother with the easy setting, it really is too easy and you'll whistle through the levels. The AI is such an advance from the likes of MOH, which I loved, but now seems dated by comparison. Even my other half has peered over my shoulder and oohed and ahhed at the graphics. IT really is a surprise to get elbowed out of the way by a squad mate who wants to take point and is effective at doing it. As the Bren gunner at Pegasus Bridge you are the one laying down suppressing fire whilst the rest of your platoon does the assault. Its a corking play and the best FPS around. Buy it now, you know it makes sense

4.0 out of 5 stars It will raise a smile and the odd eyebrow, 7 Nov 2003

For those of you who have read the author before then you'll know what to expect. For first-timers I would recommend Stupid White Men first then this one. Its not all a lengthy Anti-Bush polemic, there are some respectful nods to Republican America, and some gentle ribbing of the left. It also notes the difference between Britain and the U.S. and U.K. in our attitudes to politicians. Brits don't trust them and find it risible if they try to wrap themselves in the Union Flag, imagine Tony B. saying 'God Bless Great Britain'. Yet its a fixture in every U.S. Presidents speeech. I loved the idea of getting Oprah to run for President. Its witty, thought provoking and in some places scary. Moore is not afraid to lay the foibles of both the right and left on the table and poke them with a sharp wit. Will someone start a Micheal Moore for President campaign soon, if Martin Sheen won't run and Oprah won't take a pay cut then Mike's your man.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better graphics, new weapons and still great playability, 27 Sep 2003

The sandstorm start in the Kasserine Pass is athmospheric, there's tanks, trenches and more detail than before. I don't do multi-player on this game as there are too many cheats out there. The single player is involving, challenging and most of all fun. When you absolutely, positively, have to have a first person shoot 'em up accept no substitute MOH is still the canines whatsits
