Lost-Wax Casting: Old, New, and Inexpensive Methods
by Jr., PhD Fred R. Sias
Edition: Paperback
Price: £17.95

5.0 out of 5 stars Covers a lot of detail., 28 Sept. 2014

Good comprehensive coverage of the lost wax casting process. Filled in many of the blanks left in other reference works on the subject.

Easy to read and follow, this is an excellent starter book on the subject and well worth the money for the time it will save.

Modeller's Guide to Mould Making and Resin Casting
Modeller's Guide to Mould Making and Resin Casting
by Alex Hornor
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

2.0 out of 5 stars Badly printed book., 7 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Whilst the text of this book is quite informative, the illustrations and photos within the book are absolutely dire and almost impossible to see what they are. They look like they have come off a worn out 1970's photocopier and really let down what should have been a great little book.

The text is clear and well written and covers the main elements of the topics well, but without the clear illustrations and photos to back up that information, this book fails miserably as a guide.

Wake Up and Change Your Life
Wake Up and Change Your Life
by Duncan Bannatyne
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.49

4.0 out of 5 stars Down to earth business book., 7 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Duncan Bannatyne is one of those people you either love or hate. A harsh, hard nosed businessman that doesn't suffer fools gladly, but when you delve deeper, you realise he is a self made man that has spotted opportunities and acted on them.

Without spoiling the read for anyone, Duncan's 'career' started off with him being dishonourably discharged from the Navy at an early age. From there he goes to eventually becoming a multi millionaire. This book isn't a guide to 'get rich quick' schemes, it isn't a high powered motivational bible, nor is it pure autobiography. What it does teach, is that spotting opportunities and acting on them can be a very rewarding experience.

The book is full of contributions from other well known business people and is a relaxed, easy going guide to delving into the world of business and becoming an entrepreneur. I wouldn't say this book on its own will change your life, as that takes effort on your own part, but is shows how Duncan with little money, not much education and with not much help from the financial institutions overcame those constraints to become one of the countries best known businessmen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good beginners guide., 7 May 2013

Like many people I 'dabble' in art. Which is to say I do art when time and inclination permits. I always wanted to try oils though and this is an excellent introduction that explains everything you need to know, Unlike many art books it isn't focussed on a self indulgent showcase for the authors work, but instead shows all the skills and techniques to start working with oils as well as a broader background to art in general.

I own a few art books, but without doubt this is one of the best books I have purchased. It is clear, concise and takes the reader through everything they need to know to start working with oils. It is well written, has many illustrations, tips and guidance and is a great choice for those wanting to explore painting with oils. Recommended..

4.0 out of 5 stars Well built but small containers, 7 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is s well built piece of kit made of quality plastic, It has a strong metal clip that clamps firmly to your work area and the containers themselves have screw on lids.

The only negative is that the containers are very shallow, so if you were working on a large canvas, you may find yourself topping these up on a frequent basis.

Overall a good item though and looks like it will last for a good few years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handy little book., 8 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Others have commented on this book being a little dated, but I found all of the topics covered relate to products and techniques that are still available today? Casting after all, has been in existence for hundreds of years.

The author obviously has extensive experience in casting and passes much of this knowledge on through the pages of this little book. The illustrations and photos are clear and complement the text well.

Whilst this book won't tick everyone's boxes, especially as it perhaps has too much emphasis on sand casting, it still represents great value for money and is packed full of useful information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good general book on pewter., 8 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this book predominantly for the sections on casting. It presented the subject in a straightforward, easy to understand manner. There are of course other sections within the book covering history and other pewter working techniques.

Overall this book is a good introduction to working with pewter and gives the reader lots of useful tips and guidance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works ok but strong smell., 15 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
First off, this product does what it is intended, basically to thin out oil paints and to improve the drying times. The only negative being that it does appear to need quite a bit of Liquin on the brush to get the oils to flow fully.

The one surprising thing, is that although the Liquin does not create much of an odour in use, when it dries it does leave a strong aroma, not unlike the smell when people have been eating chips in a room.

All in all a good product.

The Bike Book

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous reference guide., 2 April 2010
This review is from: The Bike Book (Hardcover)
Like many folks returning to cycling after a few years, I was surprised just how much bikes have changed. True they might still have two wheels, handlebars and a saddle, but there the similarity ends.

As with all offerings from Haynes Publishing, I was pleased to discover that the writing style remains clean, clear and easy to understand. There are chapters covering every conceivable part of your bike, with sections on the many variations found. The book has good detailed photographs and illustrations, showing how to make adjustments and repairs to your machine. Whilst it might not tell you how to do some of the really complex things like rebuilding suspension forks, the reality is that the specialised tools require for those sort of tasks, would not be a cost effective purchase anyway.

This is a great reference guide for folks that would rather maintain and repair their own bikes, rather than keep trundling down to the bike repair shop. If your looking for a well written, easy to use guide to keeping your bike in good running order and to carry out your own repairs at low cost, then this book is certainly worth the investment. Realistically, just one simple repair will more than cover the cost of purchasing this book.

Sewing with Sergers: The Complete Handbook for Overlock Sewing (Serging . . . from Basics to Creative Possibilities)

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful little book., 18 Mar. 2010
The majority of handbooks that come with machines, are very vague when it comes to actually producing something with your overlocker. That is especially so when it comes to things like sewing techniques and dealing with problem areas such as trying to cope with setting up multiple thread tensions correctly. Unlike conventional sewing machines an overlocker can have up to five seperate threads to tension and just a slight adjustment to one can have profound effects on the others.

For a newcomer like myself I needed an easy to use guide to unlock this 'air of mystery'. This handy little reference book is absolutely great for filling in those missing gaps. Its writing style is very easy to understand and the book is full of clear and useful drawings to explain the processes of setting up your machine correctly. If you are looking for a good source of reference and easy to understand practical help in getting good results from your machine, then this is a great little book to have around.
