Zen and the Art of Making a Living: A Practical Guide to Creative Career Design (Arkana)
Zen and the Art of Making a Living: A Practical Guide to Creative Career Design (Arkana)
by Laurence G. Boldt
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Want a meaningful life; find your meaningful work. This book asks questions & gives you some answers too!, 9 May 2009
Many of us buy books - sometimes we even read some of them. But occasionally there are books that are treasures. This is one.
It gently makes you think about what you want out of life and challenges many of societies assumptions about what happiness is. Simply accepting sociieties rules is a recipe for misery for most of us.

Laurence Boldt asks us to look at work as a joyful, spiritually uplifting activity that we should embrace rather than a chore to be avoided. Provided of course, that we find the work that suits us.

We are not left in the realms of philosphy; the books gives ideas about how we might discover what the right work is for us. There are a number of activities to support it.

Even if you read the first half of the book it will inspire you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good resource to support scientific experimentation, 23 Feb 2009
This is a good resource for use in the classroom to encourage scientific enquiry with a variety of activities which children can investigate.

However, it is not (to its credit) a series of worksheets for the children to fill in. The sheets are supports for the children to experiment and draw conclusions.

Worth purchasing and there are good prices on the marketplace.

Cast in Courtlight (The Chronicles of Elantra)
Cast in Courtlight (The Chronicles of Elantra)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sequel; really likeable characters and plenty of action, 22 Feb 2009
Cast in Courtlight continues the story started in Cast in Shadow. This novel delves into the world of the enigmatic Barrani people. And because this book focuses less on Kaylin's inner turmoil than the first book which does make it a slightly easier read. But I think that it is to Sagara's credit that characters appear to grow and develop as a result of their experiences.

I found that i continued to warm to the characters and enjoyed how the story unfolded. This book has a proper story in its own right. At the same time there is a delicious anticipation for the next part Elantra will be revealed. And although there is ample material for future books I don't feel worried that I will have to wait until book 18 before any of the threads are tied off!

Michelle Sagara has a warm enjoyable writing style and a gentle sense of humour which makes the world she has created one that is easy for us to lose ourselves in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the serious student of Afro Cuban rhythms, 22 Feb 2009
This is a very impressive piece of writing which covers all the major instruments in Afro-Cuban percussion. And with the companion CD it provides an excellent resource for an aspiring musician and for anyone with a serious interest in this music.

It is not dull to read but it is a scholarly and indepth work; it is not a coffee table book!

2.0 out of 5 stars Ok for recreation but not ideal as a classroom resource, 22 Feb 2009
This is an inexpensive book and the reason for this is that there is not a huge amount in it!

I think it would be a great christmas stocking filler for a child who was into Egypt as there are some nice activities.

I bought it for my class of Year 4 children, but it is not ideal for use in the classroom, mainly because it is too small to view the activities or show them to the children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great art activity book for primary children, 22 Feb 2009
This is a very useful book with clear colour photos and helpful instructions.

It has a wide variety of drawing, painting, model making and construction activities which can be adapted for different age groups.

It is also nicely themed to allow you to focus on modern, pop art or historical art genres.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for anyone teaching Vikings, 22 Feb 2009
This book has some nice art and craft activities which my Year 4 Class really enjoyed. They especially enjoyed making (cardboard) weapons and armour for a Viking warrior. There are a number of other activities which are more restful like creating your name using runes with a handy template.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product but colour attracts the dirt, 22 Feb 2009
This is an excellent product for anyone who needs to move their laptop around the house or the office or on the move. It is a simple design with the added advantage of not allowing you to stuff 4 kg of paper in the pockets you would ordinarily find on a standard laptop case.

And you will never leave your adapter and cable behind with the integrated pocket for your laptop bits. No shoulder strap but if you would need to use one - your laptop may be too heavy!

Only downside (which is why i gave it a 4 star) is that the Dove colour does tend to attract the dirt.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some Great Salsa tracks from the Fania label, 12 Oct 2008
This review is from: Salsa Dance Hits (Audio CD)
This album is well worth having in any lover of salsa music - especially the hard sound of New York Salsa. These fania recordings include some of the top names such as Hector Lavoe (Bandolera), Charlie Palmieri(Coco) and Hector Rivera. (Tumba el quinto) playing music that makes you want to get up and dance!

If you like the smooth sophisticated latin sounds then this album is for you. You won't be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good half a book but the wheels fell off!, 11 Oct 2008
This review is from: No Time For Goodbye (Paperback)
The book starts well, we get engaged with the characters and the central mystery seems genuainely puzzling. That mystery appears to get darker and even more mysterious as the book proceeds.

But then the plot starts to part company with reality. I read to the end with an increasing sense of disbelief!

In summary: great page turner! You will keep reading to the end - but you might look back and think the ending was just a bit silly and far fetched
