3.0 out of 5 stars Not for outdoors!, 28 Aug 2013

This review is from: Kampa - Firefly Lantern
Excellent all-round illumination for its size.

But it's not even slightly waterproof! I left mine hanging outside overnight when it rained and in the morning it was totally filled with water and destroyed...

2.0 out of 5 stars Wait for the 2nd edition (if there ever is one), 1 May 2013
This book was obviously seminal in 1994 when it was published but it is now VERY dated! The chapter on "How design patterns solve design problems" is useful as an answer to question "why bother doing this?" but most of the actual patterns feel a bit clunky now and have been finessed in the time since and for each target language.

Would only be worth buying as a much cheaper paperback - I feel a little ripped off that 9 years after publication I had to shell out for the expensive hardback which then proved to be quite disappointing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very lightweight, 1 May 2013
This review is from: Just Spring (Paperback)
The subtitle of this book is "A Lightweight Introduction to the Spring Framework" but they missed the "very, very" before "lightweight".

Maybe the book is just dated (being published in 2011) but the autowire section for example doesn't mention any of the annotation styles (i.e. @Autowired) and how to configure them.

Maybe a revised edition would be worth buying, but after reading the 2011 edition you still won't be able to understand modern Java code.

1.0 out of 5 stars weak, 5 Mar 2011

The dogs went nutty over the squeaks, but destroyed them in 10 minutes flat. An ordinary tennis ball lasts much longer.

4.0 out of 5 stars tough and funny, 5 Mar 2011

The canvas construction is strong enough to stand up to four dogs' attentions and the squeak is the funniest thing ever...

2.0 out of 5 stars lovely but doesn't last, 5 Mar 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The dogs loved this, but destroyed it in two days flat.

The Kong Wubba Squeaking Dog Toy is much better - made of canvas and still not showing any signs of wear...

1.0 out of 5 stars Rancid, 5 Mar 2011

From the other reviews I was expecting something satirical, witty and funny.

Instead, this book is just bitter and unpleasant - don't waste your money.

1.0 out of 5 stars form over function, 5 Oct 2010
The keys feel great, and the mouse sits nicely in the hand.

But the left hand shift key is *microscopically* small even though there's plenty of space to make it bigger!

It's only that small so the left hand edge of the keys all line up. I'm constantly annoyed by hitting the capslock rather than the shift...

3.0 out of 5 stars Only half the story, 1 April 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Unlike most personal training or self-help books that are endlessly repetitive (and so self-defeating in their tedium), this book is direct, simple and written in the style of an engaging story. You can read this book in 30 minutes and get all the juice. This is a very good thing.

I'm not giving away too much by saying the main premise of the book is "motivation = importance + confidence" - you'll need to read the book to understand why this assertion is true.

I was dissappointed though that the book dealt fully with the "importance" side of things - giving various techniques and tricks for increasing importance - but the "confidence" side was brushed off in just 2 pages or so.

So 2.5 out 5 for only giving half the story.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cheap and cheerful, 7 Oct 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Cheap product but does exactly what it says on the tin.

Wanted to use it in my office to settle arguments about the air conditioning, but this one reads a consistant 0.9 degrees C above the air con's thermometer so now I've no idea (I was always cold!) Thermometers should really come with a declaration of calibration...

The second temperature probe on the wire was very useful as it proved that the temp under the desk is more than a degree colder than above!

WARNING: takes triple-A batteries, even though Amazon's "customers also bought" recommendation is for double-A's
