Frozen in Time: The Fate of the Franklin Expedition
Frozen in Time: The Fate of the Franklin Expedition

Price: £8.99

5.0 out of 5 stars CSI fans should buy this !, 24 Feb. 2013

Real life Crime Scene Investigation, with the added dimension of the "crime" (without giving too much away) being committed over 150 years ago. Great combination of historical narrative and detective story. Don't look at the pictures too much before bed-time though.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping first hand narrative, 24 Feb. 2013

This is one of those books that leaves a lasting impression. I have handled small boats in storm conditions a few times, and have always found it an extremely unnerving experience. However, what makes Shackleton's journey extraordinary (rather than just unnerving) is that it was undertaken by men who were already worn out from previous exertions, in the notorious southern ocean, crammed into in a 22 foot boat, and navigating without the benefit of modern clothing, or navigational aids such as GPS. The book is relatively short, but this is partly because it avoids excessive detail. This means that the excitement levels are kept high. The writing style is also very personal, and the language and foibles of early 20th century exploration come through in an entertaining manner, providing another interesting dimension to the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars initially good, but disappointing durability, 20 Jan. 2013
As an ultra runner and multi-day mountain biker I was interested in this jacket on the strength of its minimal weight, reasonable waterproof qualities and some good web reviews. Initially I was very happy with it, and liked the large front map pocket and inclusion of a wired hood. However, I found that after a few months the inner coating started to de-laminate. This significantly affected the performance, and even in short showers I would get fairly wet. Last week the velcro wrist tab detached whilst I was fastening it. The jacket still performs well as a lightweight windproof, but if you can sacrifice a few extra grams you may want to go for something more durable.
