4.0 out of 5 stars An Argentine view in English, 27 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Middlebrook provides an interesting English-language text from the Argentine perspective. Considering the limited amount of English-language publications with this view, Middlebrook's contribution is even more important because it is a good book on its own merits. It provides a very coherent and consistent narrative of the conflict.

Beginning theory (third edition): An introduction to literary and cultural theory (Beginnings)
Beginning theory (third edition): An introduction to literary and cultural theory (Beginnings)
by Peter Barry
Edition: Paperback
Price: 9.19

4.0 out of 5 stars A decent introduction, 27 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A simple book, but it fits its purpose as an introductory book well. It covers very basic topics and assumes that the reader knows very little, but it is well-structured and incrementally builds on the information offered. Some of the exercises are inserted in a rather clunky manner, but they are not absolutely necessary either.

Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway
Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway
by Jonathan Parshall
Edition: Paperback
Price: 15.82

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent account of the battle, 27 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Truly a deep and methodological approach to Midway. It deals with an exhaustive amount of topics and information, properly detailing the background of the battle in political, doctrinal and material terms. The narrative of the battle is excellently carried out, incorporating many different and complementing sources to bring a vivid depiction of the action.

The Concept of the Political: Expanded Edition
The Concept of the Political: Expanded Edition
by Carl Schmitt
Edition: Paperback
Price: 14.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Some issues with translation, but a very interesting essay, 27 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very interesting essay by Schmitt, widely considered to be his most influential work. The language is clearly dated, and the translation is a bit odd in parts (particularly regarding how Schmitt's noted are just incorporated into the text rather than footnoted). However, it is a good book and key to understanding the development of 20th century political thought in general and totalitarianism in particular.

State Building: Governance and World Order in the 21st Century: Governance and World Order in the Twenty-first Century
State Building: Governance and World Order in the 21st Century: Governance and World Order in the Twenty-first Century
by Francis Fukuyama
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.24

3.0 out of 5 stars Little new material, 27 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The work as a whole is a decent summary of the current mainstream of moderate-liberal internationalist thought. It is effective as a review of the salient points of what these positions have to offer in regards to state building. However it does not add anything particularly new, so unless one wants to tread over the basics there is not much point to reading it.

A note must be made on the overreaching "theme". This book was very topical upon publication, but the strong focus that it brings on the Afghanistan and Iraq cases makes it seem rapidly dated. Of course the book is not dedicated to mere theory-crafting regarding intervention in these two countries.(less)

2.0 out of 5 stars Dated, 27 Mar 2013

Well-written, but dated. There is a lot of 'lost' information that simply wasn't available when the book was originally written, but newer publications do include. There are better publications out now.
