Silverado: Neil Bush and the Savings & Loan Scandal
Silverado: Neil Bush and the Savings & Loan Scandal
by Steven K. Wilmsen
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars INGENUOUS OR DUPLICITOUS?, 5 Mar. 2015

For an avid reader of all things relating to fraudulent banking scandals and the like, the 80's Savings and Loan debacle in which totally irresponsible deregulation allowed crooks to make large lorry loads of money at the expense of the taxpayer, is, indeed a rich vein of reading for me.

And there were no greater fraudulent taxpayer rip-offs than the Silverado Savings and Loan Bank guided down the paths of swindling and financial treachery by it's boss Michael Wise, CFO Bob Lewis, seemingly unhindered by a Board of Directors which included Neil Bush, son of USA President George Snr, and very close suspect dealings with a gaggle of dubious business men including Ken Good and Bill Walters. Many hundreds of millions of $ were spirited away in a tsunami of spurious property transactions and fraudulent accounting some for the personal benefit of individuals, some just darn frittered away and some to try and prop up the balance sheet of this fast sinking S & L Titanic.

When the inevitable sinking came the jolly old taxpayer, of course picked up the huge tab, and the players in this dodgy game ran for cover, hoping to avoid prison and/or hold on to some of the ill-gotten gains by one means or another, legal or otherwise.

Neil Bush was left to minimise his role in the running of Silverado so as to not cause too much harm to his father's political future. He fell back on the line of excuses that he used in explaining his hitherto lacklustre unsuccessful business career namely 'it was nothing to do with me, nobody should or can expect a director to know what is going on within the company even on the big, important matters'. Nevertheless, whilst lucky to avoid criminal charges he was fined by a regulatory body for his part in this financial chicanery, although it is said that somebody else stumped up his due. It seems that blundering through life, making a fancy living solely on the back of his family's renown, and having your fiscal bloopers magically picked up by somebody else, was his prefered 'modus operandi'.

The author Steven Wilmsen has well used his investigative journalistic background to good effect and has written an informative, highly readable account.

Central Park, an American Masterpiece: A Comprehensive History of the Nation's First Urban Park
by Sara Cedar Miller

5.0 out of 5 stars A UNIQUE OASIS OF TRANQUILLITY, 3 Mar. 2015

Central Park reigns supreme as the world's greatest urban park and by a very long way. To find, explore, relax in and experience the verdant exuberances of this large island of calm and serenity surrounded by towering edifices, cacophonous noises, and maddening milling humanity is truly wonderous.

The author, a photographer and official historian for The Central Park Conservancy has produced a captivating story of this green miracle complemented by her photographs, and original plans and drawings.

If you cannot get to visit Central Park, and everyone should try if humanly and economically possible, then this publication is next best.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE EURO UNMASKED, 1 Mar. 2015

This review is from: End of the Euro (Hardcover)
Eminent Belgian economist Johan Van Overveldt in this excellent book sets out the rationale leading to the founding of the European Union and the move to create a common currency. It is quite clear that the author regards this currency commonization as fundamentally flawed and doomed to failure contending that a collective monetary system must have tight collective adherence in all matters relating to national budgets, taxation, and banking etc. which at present does not happen.

This book was published in the wake of the Greek 2010 Bailout since when there has been further problems with this country upon a change in government, wanting to renegotiate the deal which has resulted in yet further Global weakening in confidence in the Euro and thrown it's future into some doubt. And Greece is not the only country struggling to come to terms with the consequences of economic and monetary unification. Very few EU members seem totally committed to put aside national interests for the sake of the union.

Mr van Overtveldt is convinced that unless drastic changes are implemented, which he does not believe will happen, then the Euro is doomed which in turn will cast doubts over the future of the current modus operandi of the European Union.

It seems that the real economic powerhouse is Germany, through which every decision has to be channelled for approval, putting that country in 'de facto' control of Europe, something that has eluded it's armies in the past.

A good, concise, interesting and thought provoking book.

5.0 out of 5 stars HAPPY SLEEP, 22 Feb. 2015

Young girls nowadays are very keen to be part of the latest 'hot-to-trot' trends and certainly I understand there is nothing hotter than Disney's Frozen and so our granddaughter was absolutely over the moon to be able to cover her bed with this Frozen character festooned Duvet as well as laying her pretty little head on a Frozen pillowcase.

A most successful present that has and will be getting lots of use......until that is the next craze rears it's head.

Micky Flanagan: Live Collection [DVD]
Micky Flanagan: Live Collection [DVD]
Price: £10.00

4.0 out of 5 stars PRURIENT AND COARSE BUT VERY FUNNY, 22 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Southend where this was filmed would be the epicentre of the Micky Flanagan devotees, sharing with him a love of all things East End and Essex which adds enormously to the whole occasion and encourages Mr Flanagan to be at his most outrageous, cockney swaggering best.

Whilst most of the dvd I have seen in bits and pieces on television before, the coming together of the component parts makes for a most enjoyable, and funny entertainment experience. His humour is founded on a very perceptive understanding of the more basic elements of human nature, warts and all, but I am not certain that he needs to concentrate on the very worst aspects of bodily habits and profanities to such an extent. Having said this he had his adherent audience completely under his spell and gagging for more......so, perhaps it is me that is out of step in wishing he toned his act down a tad as I am certain that he would be very funny without resorting to such dubious material.

I dont know what trousers these pockets fit but for sure they do not begin to fit any of my or my wife's denim jeans. We also matched them up to all of our tailored trousers and again they were miles too small and we are wondering what range or type of trouser they do fit and what size of human being?

3.0 out of 5 stars HELPS BUT SHOULDN'T BE NECESSARY, 22 Feb. 2015

The inability of the electrical lighting industry to design a fitting and/or a bulb that fits flush into a ceiling that can readily replaced is very, very surprising in this age of highly advanced design, technology and manufacture. Little or no thought is give to the elderly and infirm who are probably unable to extract one of these flush fitting bulbs and each time one goes would have to call and pay for an electrician or handyman to make a house visit for this purpose. Even those still dextrous enough to reach the fitting, will have extreme difficulty extracting the bulb such is the poorness of the design. One wonders whether a portion of the charges accrued by electricians/handymen from carrying out this task for particularly the elderly and infirm have to be passed on to the originators of these charges viz. the fitting and bulb manufacturers.

However, this little gadget, whilst not 100% certain to work without several attempts and whilst balancing precariously on a chair, stool or ladder will with perseverance help.

Bob Monkhouse: Unpublished!
Bob Monkhouse: Unpublished!
by David Ismay
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE NOT TO MISS, 22 Feb. 2015

Without doubt one of the finest comedians of his time or indeed any other time. This book co-authored by experienced writer Chris Gidney and Dave Ismay, who was a close friend of Bob's for forty years is a wealth of personal anecdotes, gags, sketches and gags from the lost joke books.

The anecdotal stories give a very good insight into Bob's career and family life without falling into the usual pitfalls of biographies that provide long dissertations about aspects of a persons life that have very little interest to the average reader such as childhood, schooling etc.

And, of course it gives a multitude of examples of Bob's humour, and gags. An extremely readable, engaging and funny book.

Highly recommended.

With the advent of ipads and the like carried by many whilst on holiday, a City Guide need only contain sufficient information to direct you towards the relevant website for more details whether it be Places of Interest, Parks and green spaces, Hotels, Restaurants, Excursions etc. and this guide certainly fulfills this criteria, and is a pocket sized for carrying around.

However, the street maps will need to be supplemented with more detailed maps usually readily available from your hotel and Tourist Office for free.
