...and very well played. Close to the edge of being just a bit too 'produced' and perfect, but it is very pleasant to listen to...and we have done several times since purchase. A recommended, lovely album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Annoying title hides useful guide, 9 Mar 2014

I tend to shy away from gender slanted products, but was persuaded by other reviews to buy this as a good introduction. It is just that, pleasingly laid out, lots of pictures and concise explanations of things.

Bought for a Panasonic FZ200. Thought it may be too small at first, but does go in and out OK, and compact size is ideal if you don't want to be weighed down by anything other than the essentials!

The Strange Case of the Composer and His Judge
The Strange Case of the Composer and His Judge
Price: 5.85

2.0 out of 5 stars Frustrating, 9 Mar 2014
Alarm bells should ring I suppose when all the "quotes" on the book are for other books by the author. Swayed by these and a jacket summary praising the 'astonishing verve and power' of the novel, I ploughed on - expecting some unforeseen twist or explosive secret to emerge.
Unhappily it seems the author was as overpowered by her creation's charisma as the characters in her book. All of them, it seems, adore the Judge, men are literally driven wild, even the icy Composer is enchanted by her. So the astronomical 'Faith', the disappearing money, the puzzling deaths in the end are just a backdrop to this dominating Superwoman.
Perhaps it's meant as an ironic critique of our obsession with cults and the cult of personality. However, by selling it as a mystery the publisher is leading us to expect something quite different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun mix of school, history and mystery, 29 May 2009
This review is from: Maxwell's Grave (Hardcover)
Wanted to put a different point of view to previous (at the time sole) review. Would say this comes in the 'jolly good read' category - some interesting historical and literary refs - - but none of it to be taken too seriously.
A perceptive and refreshingly cynical view of school and the use of 'business-speak'. Yes, some of the witticisms are just the acceptable side of grating, but overall a good bit of crime-writing with a chuckle along the way.

Frightening, funny, sad and hopeful. Kate Thompson makes every aspect very real - especially the parts that could be imaginary.
