Eight Legged Freaks [DVD] [2002]
Eight Legged Freaks [DVD] [2002]
Dvd ~ David Arquette

3.0 out of 5 stars Freaking great, 16 July 2013
There's a huge slice of fun to be had here as Arquette's bungling hero blasts his way around and Wuhrer shares centre stage as the dependable small town cop. The effects are above par, there's plenty of energy and the acting is spot on for this type of feature. If Tremors, Slither or Evolution hit the spot for you, then you'll be right at home with ELF. When an Arizona town is besieged by massive spiders contaminated by toxic waste it's upto the sheriff and a mining engineer to mobilise the townsfolk and do battle with the army of arachnids. It provides hokey b-movie madness on an A movie budget and it's a shame for the likes of Wuhrer that it wasn't a bigger hit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad little movie at all., 16 July 2013
This review is from: Red Planet [DVD] [2000] (DVD)
The sets and CGI are outstanding in this engaging scifi adventure but as ususal the tension is brought about by a combination of technical catastrophy and the resulting human fallout. Kilmer shines in an understated performance as a relatively normal guy (for a world saving astronaught) who finds himself on a mission with the finest brains on the planet. With Earth's resources running out, an ambitious plan to "terraform" Mars with life growing algae culminates with a manned mission to check on progress. An emergency landing and the harsh environment take out two of the crew before they realise their habitable module is wrecked, the algae is under threat and their experimental guidance robot is damaged and now sees them as enemies. When the robot goes rogue and starts picking off the humans, Kilmer finds himself trapped and hunted across the surface of the red planet; his only chance is to hotwire an ancient Russian capsule and blast back into space where the stunning Carrie-Anne Moss awaits him.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stunning visuals, 16 July 2013
This review is from: Tron Legacy [DVD] (DVD)
This highly sylised reboot sees Flynn's gravel voiced offspring sucked into cyberspace on a quest to find his dad. The wonderful visuals and a thundering score take precident over a lukewarm script which goes to the enth degree to explain its own pseudo science but is far less capable at entertaining the viewer. Flynn seems to have morphed into Jesus and a series of exposition segments try to explain how the current cyber world of Tron came to be. Olivia Wilde decorates the stunning vista and the action segments are thrilling at times but there isn't nearly enough substance to the script. The action comes to a crashing halt during the climax when all seems lost before Flynn effortlessly dispatches Clu without any explanation as to how he did it, or why, after his years away, he decides to sacrifice himself at the last moment. Stunning to look at, not much to think about, and what there is doesn't make an awful lot of sense. I will watch this again in the hope that I missed something and will update my review accordingly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Saintly shenanigans!, 16 July 2013
This review is from: The Saint [DVD] [1997] (DVD)
Kilmer makes a suitably dashing hero but is a little too fresh faced in the role for my liking. Having said that, the back story to Simon Templar goes some way to telegraph our hero's motivation as the saint of the title. The two leads look great together and their relationship is well defined. High production values meant that no expense was spared on the superb sets and locations. The interesting plot involves a corrupt Russian oligarch and the search for a free energy source, the direction is lively and not without humour. The villian isn't as ruthless as I would've liked and the Saint's penchant for not using weapons is it's only downfall when compared to similar themed movies.

3.0 out of 5 stars Galactic thrills!, 15 July 2013
This review is from: Dark Angel [DVD] (DVD)
An intergalactic drug dealer is here for your brian matter! Despite its daft premise, this above average actioner is well worth ninety minutes of your time. A musical score by Jan Hammer is just one aspect of the slick production values which are bolstered by a breezy script peppered with one liners. I'm always more sympathetic towards the big Swede, he's got great screne prescence and his acting is better than some other actions stars we could mention! Craig R Baxley (stone cold, action jackson) provides journeyman thrills from the director's chair and as the movie goes from A to Z, it picks up a few cliches along the way, mis-matched buddy cops, revenge etc, but the action aspects are very well handled, and Dolph's one liner / final blow combo is straight from action heaven!

From Paris With Love [DVD] [2010]
Dvd ~ John Travolta

2.0 out of 5 stars Less brains than Paris Hilton's g-string, 15 July 2013
Despite this being my usual cup of tea I couldn't enjoy it. I'm a proper action junkie and have been for years but I found it a bit of a mis step for Besson. There's loads of money on the screen, the sets are great, the set pieces are competently handled but writing the script wouldn't trouble a baboon. There are glimpses of promise in here, JRM's character was quite engaging and it might have made a better movie if the mild mannered office boy had to foil the evil plot by himself. There's plenty of action on screen but it's tediously pedestrian. Travolta plays an absolute moron who despite this, is given highly classified and sensitive work to carry out overseas. He looks like a goon and behaves like a total spanner. I'll happily suspend disbelief if the characters are worth routing for but not this goatee'd plumb. This is the worst major studio picture I've seen since Beverly Hills Cop 3 and that was a stinker!

2.0 out of 5 stars This is a proper turd, 15 July 2013
This review is from: Battlefield Earth [DVD] (DVD)
The director must've had a knock on the head. This thing is virtually unwatchable. If they'd used proper camera angles and not covered each scene with some bizarre shading then the film might have even been ok, at worst it might have attained some level of cult status. I'm not adverse to sci-fi, might even call myself a fan, I enjoyed the book but this display of film making ineptitude is so thoroughly awful that I'm not even convinced it was made by humans. The story has all the great ingredients and there was enough money pumped in to create some decent sets, costumes and effects but by jingo, did they make a ham fisted mess of it! Aspiring film makers should be made to watch it in under the heading - how to turn an easy hit into a steaming pile of manure.

3.0 out of 5 stars Oh what a tangled web we weave.., 14 July 2013
This review is from: Runaway Jury [DVD] [2004] (DVD)
when first we practice to decieve.

Despite the stellar cast, this hadn't really caught my eye and it's taken me almost a decade to sit down and watch it. In the end I was pleasantly surprised, Cusack heads a strong cast in a labrinthine court room thriller which works well due to the strong performances. The central plot is simple and efficient but it's layered beneath chases, surveillance and intrigue which pads out the movie to a two hour run time. It skips along nicely mind you and the stars bring their "A" game. The basic premise of a landmark trial against gun companies and how the efforts to control the jury are already thwarted by someone on the inside.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Jonny Lee Miller Show, 13 July 2013
This review is from: Elementary - Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
And very good he is too. His contemporary Sherlock is played with gusto; he's edgy, cerebral, spiteful and selfish but we get to glimpse his underlying human side just enough to care about him. He's so good in fact that other things pale by comparison to his performance; I found a couple of the stories a little tame, although the two part ending to season one was excellent and I liked what they did with Adler and Moriarty. The show has high production values which has created some excellent sets - apart from those purporting to be London - English cars on an American street! An excellent cast is overshadowed at times by the sheer energy JLM can put into a scene; the delicious Lucy Liu has very little to do, the producers noticed this and by season two her role changed somewhat. Definitely worth a watch; I'm looking forward to the DVD.

3.0 out of 5 stars Crude but fun all the same!, 13 July 2013
This is absolutely bonkers. With a tongue firmly planted in its cheek this pokes a finger in the eye of the medieval, fantasy and comedy genres all at once. It's downright silly in parts, stupid in others and while I didn't laugh out loud I did find it a fun way to waste a couple of hours. The sets are fantastic, the script is packed with characters, one liners and pratt falls and in the best comedy tradition, some of the players play it entirely straight whilst our dim witted buffoon of a hero crashes from one situation to another. Danny Mcbride engages in slapstick and farce with mixed results, some of the gross out stuff is crude to the point of a guilty snigger. The strong supporting cast do a smashing job but the script is all for Mcbride. It's not a bad movie at all, the story is well told and the effects are first class.
