1.0 out of 5 stars Tortuous, 12 Mar. 2011
I loved Sophie Hannah's first three books in this series. But since then I have been reading them in hope of a return to form, only to be more disappointed each time. 'Lasting Damage' was tortuous. The plot was ridiculous, the dialogue was inane, the characters, as usual, two dimensional, unlikely and almost entirely unlikeable. It is so difficult to care about the book's events when almost all the characters are despicable ! I kept on with the book out of strong curiosity; a need to know how the plot could possibly be resolved. But I couldn't wait for it to be over and I won't buy any more in this series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 15 July 2009
I loved Sophie Hannah's previous three psychological thrillers, however 'The Other Half Lives' was a huge disappointment. Having looked forward to reading it I was greatly relieved to finally finish it. The plot was so convoluted and twisted that this seemed to be the entire point of the book, rather than the story itself. The book was as tedious as the relationship between the priniciple characters Simon and Charlie is becoming. There was barely another sympathetic character in the book. There were pages and pages and more pages of explanation of the dreary plot and the 'reveal' itself went on for chapters. The final scene with one of the principle characters gasping out her version of events made me cringe on behalf of the author, it was embarrassingly bad. Despite a completely ludicrous premise I feel this could have been a good book if it had been edited by about a hundred pages ? Where was the editor ? I hope Sophie Hannah goes on to write more thrillers, but that they are much more akin to her previous three than this one and that this isn't the start of a Patricia Cornwell type descent into pap.
I'm at a loss to understand the favourable reviews given to the book by some of the national press. I can only think that it's a case of Emperor's New Clothes, nobody wanted to admit that actually the plot was insanely beyond them and beyond almost anybody's boredom threshold.

I was nervous about buying a laptop for my twins, aged 11 and ten year old. Although I use one myself I am a bit of a novice. However I've been delighted with this product. It was exceptional value, I managed to set it up in a short time, including very easy to use parental controls. Even linking it to the other laptop, printer and internet via wi-fi was made easy by on-screen instructions. have seen it written that it is not good for playing games on, but my children have already managed Flight Simulator and Harry Potter games without any difficulty. The laptop itself feels solid and looks good and the battery lasts well. My only criticism, and it has been made by other reviewers, is that the cursor doesn't always seem to be completely under control of the mouse ! Overall I have been extremely pleased with it as a simple, robust, easy to understand, good value laptop for general domestic, students etc.
