4.0 out of 5 stars Terminator salvation, 3 Feb 2013
A bit like playing the movie, but with impressive atmosphere and design too.. Great fun and a great pace of action. This is a slice of well crafted space cod shooting. There s even a doom BFG gun. What struck me also is the detailed design and graphics.
The story is necessarily gung-ho, but with a little bit of political intrigue. One day a real writer will pen a game and increase the depth of things, but this does a good job.
And I've not got to the multiplayer yet really... Looking forward to immersing in this alternate future.
Enjoying playing the resistance!

4.0 out of 5 stars Up to scratch, 27 Jan 2013
This review is from: Far Cry 3 (PS3) (Video Game)
For those Far Cry 2 veterans you ll know what's in store, only this is Far Cry 2 updated, streamlined, and in a lush new setting. So it s a great shooter, with an engrossing single player, a fun map to get to grips with and excellent multiplayer design to extend the lifespan of the game.

But the best open-world game ever? Not really. Red Dead Redemption is still one of the best. The environment here is good, but we'll see better. The skills you get to unlock are eventually rewarding and there is depth in the planning of attacks.

What I'd like to see: - a world that is updated more and more by developers, after you ve bought the game, with new bad guys and types of bad guy appearing on the scene.
- Unexpected AI , since once you re familiar with how the bad guys move, it gets predictable.
- more varied characteristics of the world. Eg, wildlife attacking villages, more quests and characters appearing.

I did like the simple story, but the hero is quite annoying. The whole 'go warrior crazy' theme was a good idea, but it didn't really work that well.

Anyway, I'm onto Hitman Absolution now.. Im imagining a whole Island where Hitman gets to move around... This would be just as cool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wicked bottle of Polanski, 3 Jun 2012
This review is from: Ghost, The [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Understated shades purvey this involving coup of a film, so fans of 'The Ninth Gate' won't be disappointed. Only it's updated, with more hyper-real political themes that are the backdrop this time. People get carried away commenting upon the plausibility of the plot facts etc etc...and forget that Polanski makes art, focussed on an individual, carefully building in subtle camerawork that punctuates a gradual escalation of tension. This time the message is more potent: corruption, truth, the ghost that is lost between the lines in the lofty decisions made every day. Well done Richard Harris, a British Michael Crichton, who provided the original book. Two talents combined here. This is a thriller in its purest form. It's the individual that matters most to Polanski, caught in a seemingly simple, promising emotional landscape of reality until suddenly the deep waves come rolling. The pleasure for us is in sensing these waves with the director. Which is why we have such a terrific backdrop of water in this movie.

McGregor is superb, nowhere jarring in performance, as are all the others.

Essential addition. Leaves you just a little haunted by people, by the minefield of politics. The facts matter less, the emotion is there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Long worthy adaptation, 19 May 2012

Fans of Jack London books will appreciate the task of the film makers on this one, the Sea Wolf. Overall... a worthy attempt here, and a sea voyage of discovery in terms of values clashing against the waves, just as it should be.

There are flaws: narration may have helped, Tim Roth overacts and mumbles, it has a 'made for tv' aspect which means acting, style, editing and atmosphere suffer, but don 't let this put you off. One day someone may make a shorter, slicker, darker, fiercer, ambiguous Oscar-winner. But for now this one makes a lasting mark, if you stay the course.

Sebastian Koch thankfully is excellent as the riveting sea captain Wolf Larsen, and I quite like the tacked-on psychological ending they,ve invented. It helps to provide a bit of satisfaction to London's emptier one. Although this may subtract from his elemental ambiguity.

The sense of realism and production quality never falters, but occasionally the lesser acting and script does. But in terms of the interpretation and appreciation of London's vision, I think he'd really have liked what they've made here.

But this is a critique. The test of any film version hinges on Larsen and how we remember him. After this voyage, we are all changed by his 'floating little society'. Just as the book does, reminding us of stormy natures, our sense over savagery, savagery over sense.

I'm a guy and I've used this once a day since getting it... feeling loads better already. Great value: it zips along at a good pace, with no long intervals or endless waiting (for stats or things to load like in Wii fit). This is important as I only have 30 mins to spare. You don't need any controllers, although the Eye camera is great as it tracks your movements and prepares how well you're doing against Mel B. You break a sweat, which is the main thing. Some of the dance workouts are hard but you just press Tutorial button (again, nice you don't have to sit through long tutorials and can just bypass). It does give you full stats and lets you customise your workouts: Combat, Aerobics, Exercise, Dance etc...good control over the intensity of what you're after.

You start to realise how good it is to improve co-ordination and get your mind and body working. Hopefully, I'll be keeping this up for awhile. Unfortunately, there can never be a game that makes you make time for workout: you have to do this alone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Get lost in the west, 15 Jan 2012
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Best game for me in 2011, and not one to sell on for some time, as the multiplayer aspect is also so strong, with excellent co-op and free for all levels, always good for a blast. Added to this there are excellent mini-games, that teach you aspects of poker, black jack etc...This is everything you'd expect from a game: immersive, educational, surprising, well-written, full of tricks and loads a fun. Rockstar nail the sandbox, open-world genre again and it makes you think of all the other settings they could plunder: robin hood, king arthur, Victorian London, etc etc.. Yes, red dead is obvioiusly a guy game with a lot of shooting, and the cut scenes are quite slow and laid-back, which is fine as long as you have bag fulls of time. Here the shooting is actually designed for console controllers and not mice. The sheer size of the game can be daunting, but progressing with the main story rewards with effort as you go deeper and ends with a taste for more... Where in steps Undead Nightmare, genuinely spooky and adding a whole new twist and surprise to the now-familiar landscape. All we need now is more dimensions (less guns and more speech etc) and missions to rival skyrim plus make-your-own levels and this game will be the Wild West!

3.0 out of 5 stars A great blast, 9 Oct 2011

Some decent new enhancements, combos and array of force powers combines with great graphics.
The storyline, depth and length of the game makes for a short, limited experience but it is still a force-ful one. For someone who wants a good blast it's well worth it for this action and choice of powers.

Let's hope they use the success within the unleashed productions in a more subtle, thoughtful experience down the line, perhaps combined with Battlefront 2 and multiplayer qualities... As the boredom would have crept into to this sequel, even it was much longer.

Good fun combo of comic book and familiar kombat characters. Hey, it's a ps3 games, so graphics and effects are all top quality. Enough here to keep you going, although lacks the depth of Armageddon in terms of customisations, player creation etc... however, this one goes online to an easy, well designed Internet competition, and it's the first time I've played across the internet a combat game. I've always wanted to fight as Batman, and they do a pretty good job. Makes me think it could have been awesome if they d focussed on comics only, and enhanced all the comic characters, with even more moves and a dark Gotham City adventure level or something. Personally I found the mix of the two worlds storyline a bit unconvincing. I much prefer comics over kombat characters. They try to please everyone here though. And it's all great stuff. The joker is mean, but why don't they offer even more special moves?
