Omaha the Cat Dancer: The Complete Set of Eight Volumes (The Complete "Omaha")
Omaha the Cat Dancer: The Complete Set of Eight Volumes (The Complete "Omaha")
by James Vance
Edition: Paperback
Price: £52.17

4.0 out of 5 stars Omaha finds her ending. We almost find her name., 7 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
At last the story of Omaha is wrapped up with a neat bow -- everyone has an ending and the characters are mostly true to themselves.

It's a bit *too* neat and I found the last volume disappointinmg but at this price you can't really complain. I waited a long time to find out how Omaha got on and it was worth it, it just seemed to wrap up too quickly.

Good artwork, plenty of soap-opera twists, not as much sex as you'd expect from the first two volumes, all in all a fun collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard work to iron but good otherwise, 7 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The print on this is quite heavy so you feel the iron may "stick" while pressing it. Also the ink smelt quite strongly untkil it had been washed.

Otherwise a good quality shirt in a good pattern.

The Goodies Super Chaps Three
The Goodies Super Chaps Three

5.0 out of 5 stars Like detail only more so, 3 Jun 2014
I wrote in a review of "The Goodes Rule - OK" that the ideal Goodies book would be something like Andrew Pixley's massively informative DVD booklets. Well, here it is -- 580+ pages of dense facts and figures written with the clear enjoyment of a fan with access to industrial-scale paperwork archives.

Genuinely, I cant think of anything you might want to know about Tim, Graeme and the other one that's not in here. Even sideline projects (eg "Astronauts", "Up And Out", "Doctor On The Box") are covered.

The only caveat is that this is not for casually riffling through -- it's a meaty work and full of stuff you may not care about (music cues, sketch reuse, broadcast dates and so on). Also it's crystallised in 2010 so events since then are not covered.

But if you're a fan, it's pretty much definitive.

3.0 out of 5 stars Caution -- not all extras are present, 9 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Just a warning here -- the three-disc set is supposed to come with a couple of PDF files but these are not on this disc nor were they in the replacement Amazon kindly sent me.

In other notes, the picture here is good and firm and the sound is excellent. A fine disc but marred by the absence of the promised script/info files. No reply from the production company either.

The Complete Dear Ladies and Gala Evenings [DVD]

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete and unadulterated joy, 9 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the full set of pretty much all the Hinge And Bracket ever on TV -- three series of their sitcom and eight gala evenings -- with some fine extras including a lovely interview with Dr Hinge himself, George Logan.

Very much a genteel character piece, the sitcom is relaxed and easy to watch. The writing, by Gyles Brandreth, is spiky and funny and the characters and setting are almost PG Wodehouse-ish.

The gala evenings are different experiences, more solidly musical with much semi-improvised bickering and banter to keep the pace up.

Just a pure joy to watch, definitely a good value purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice to have on BluRay but lacking extras, 9 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It may seem strange to say this blu ray lacks extras when it features two entire films (the excellent Quatermass 2 and X: The Unknown) as extras but there are already superb DVDs of all three titles with features, commentaries and so on issued by DD.

That aside, this has a fine picture and good loud sound. There's a phasing issue with the soundtrack on X: The Unknown that's not present on the DD DVD so that's another star off. But this is still easy way to get three top-notch films on a single disc and for that reason I can only really mark it down one star. If the commentaries and so on had been on this disc too then it would have been a five-star from me. If you don't care about extras then buy this.

A couple of extra notes -- no subtitles and, although it's Australian, it plays fine on UK players as does the DVD version that comes with it.

Monty Python's Flying Circus: Complete and Annotated - All the Bits
Monty Python's Flying Circus: Complete and Annotated - All the Bits

Price: £28.00

2.0 out of 5 stars A great opportunity missed, 28 Nov 2013
Oh dear -- I love annotated books, I love Monty Python but this was a bit of a disappointment all round. First, and less important, the scripts themselves are printed in a way that makes them harder to read than they need to be. Secondly, and more to the point, the annotations are generally minor things, mostly intended for non-UK readers and generally facile. As a random instance, "Hire Purchase is equivalent to the layaway plan." Is it? I didn't know that but I do know what Hire Purchase is and a straight explanation might have been useful and informative. Much that is interesting is omitted including basic information like casting not in the scripts (who plays the jury in the multiple murder sketch?), location (where was the cycling tour, really?), music (we all know it's "The Liberty Bell" but that simple note's not in here, or if it is I've not found it) or filming notes. Many sketches are not notated at all and some notes are plain wrong (eg the explanation of why the pepperpots were so called).

Despite this,it's a nice book to have, does contain some useful and interesting information (possibly inadvertently) and is a satisfying thing to have about the house.

I wonder if we could persuade Andrew Pixley to have a go at a Python book?

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't last very long, 24 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought in May for my daughter's laptop, the strain relief at the laptop end has already (in November, after only six months!) worn out leaving bare wire exposed. It's had to be binned and I will be looking for a better-made one now.

It seems there's good reason for this to be cheap.

Worked for a while but did get *very* hot so only 2 stars maximum.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blu-Ray Terminator goodness...?, 15 Jun 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The blu-ray version of The Terminator comes with fewer extras than the ultimate DVD edition but the picture is pretty good and the sound is fine so an OK purchase. The recent issue comes with a lenticular slipcase (not pictured) as well.

Extras are in SD and non-anamorphic.

5/5 for the film as always but not really a great package so only a 4/5 overall.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strange, sweet little mixed bag, 10 Feb 2009
This is an odd record, and no mistake. Ivor and the Pogles are distinct in sound and mood but still feel united by the virtue of both being from the same pen, Vernon Elliot. In a way this sums up the TV series as well -- they're very different but they're from the same pen, Oliver Postgate, so they feel unified in some way.

The content of the disc is much more Pogles than Ivor, despite the cover, and the Ivor material is much more memorable. Of course, I love anything with a bassoon, so I'm biased. There are several tracks of spot effects for both shows (such as Ivor's distinctive driving sounds) and I'd have rather have had these separately to get a unified musical suite.

Overall, a sweet, charming album that'll appeal to anyone who's ever seen either show.
