5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant !, 15 Oct. 2013
This review is from: Red Hot Plus Fela (Audio CD)
Today, October 15th would have been Fela's 75th Birthday, 16 years after he died in '97 - twenty years after the Fela Affair in '77.

On the afternoon of Feb. 18, around 1,000 soldiers gathered around Fela's Kalakuta Republic, a two-story yellow building in the sprawling Lagos slum of Surulere. In the ensuing siege, the house was burned to the ground and most of its 60 occupants were hospitalized. Fela was beaten unconscious and held under armed guard in a hospital room. His 77-year-old mother was thrown from her bedroom window and died of her injuries the following year.

For the rest of his life, Fela was an enemy of various Nigerian Governments, as much a political figure as a musical one.

His musical legacy is vast and this Various artists album will proudly hold its place among the best Fela tributes with a galaxy of stars including Angelique Kidjo and ?uestlove combining on a fabulous rendition of Lady, my personal favourite but run close by numerous other high quality, well recorded gems including a remarkable Sorrow Tears and Blood by Kronos Quartet and it is available on vinyl.

A must buy for any Fela fans and a great introduction to his music for a younger hip hop generation.

And to make it perfect all profits go to charity.

Thank you Knitting Factory for this fine tribute to one of the truly great figures in music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funky Afro Beat, 2 Oct. 2013
Another first class compilation from Analog Africa, 13 very rare high quality recordings of tracks from 70's and early 80's funky James Brown influenced dance music from Ghana, containing at least 6 real gems guaranteed to fill any dance floor.

What really sets this apart however is the packaging with a photo booklet which is an outstanding piece of art and worth the money alone, especially if it is included in the vinyl package.

Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read - Highly Recommended, 10 Jun. 2013
This review is from: Think Zombie (Kindle Edition)
What a delight to read a Zombie story instead of being assaulted by ridiculous CGI "action" movies.

This well written and thought provoking book allows and encourages the reader to use their own imagination as the story unfolds with a page turning tempo while providing the opportunity to pause for thought and reflection on events and twists that reflect the madness that modern life has become.

Highly recommended as an enjoyable bit of escapism, fun to read and thought provoking, will make a great film script so read the real thing now !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnicent Afro Latin Music, 12 Nov. 2012
This is a superbly packaged and collated, in depth introduction to classic 60's/ 70's/ 80's Colombian dance music and highly recommended for anyone who has any interest in Latin music and Afro Beat. Available in double CD or 2 x double vinyl. Many of the tracks are available for the first time.

For a trip to the sea, sun and carnival atmosphere of Colombia's Caribbean coast, short of getting on a plane this is the next best experience.

Since it arrived it has been played almost continuously, each time a new favourite track emerging. The quality of recordings is generally excellent and the 60 page booklet is an interesting and very informative addition to a wonderful collection of great music.

Forget the rubbish remixes by Krapit and the appropriately named Lowlives - the original radio edit and full length vocal mixes - done in Birmingham are the very finest examples of what funky soulful house was meant to be. 5.0 out of 5 stars Master African Musician, 29 April 2012

This review is from: Asem Ni/Trouble Dat (Audio CD)
This is the debut recording under his own name for the Master Drummer Nana Tsiboe. He was born and raised in Ghana and toured the US at the height of the civil rights movement in the 1960s and as a 7 year old opened the shows on solo drum, sharing stages with Martin Luther King, Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X - and yes I have a photo ! Since then he has worked with a breathtaking list of musical legends including Fela Kuti, Paul McCartney, Marvin Gaye, Ali Farka Touré, Oumou Sangare, Ravi Shankar and Nina Simone. There are tracks of pure African beauty on this wonderful CD. Now very rare - get it while you can !! His modest claim to fame is that at the Montreux Jazz Fest while back stage waiting for Miles Davis to go on stage, Gil Evans looked up, saw Nana and said Hey Miles man come over here !! They could be brothers !!
