What the **** is Normal?!
What the **** is Normal?!
by Francesca Martinez
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.09

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful and ridiculously funny read, 3 Aug. 2014

Just an utterly brilliant read! I am a decade older than Francesca and it seemed that so many of her experiences with cerebral palsy were similar to mine. Meaning that acceptance of 'difference' has not moved on as much as I would like! Many of these experiences are indeed universal, but it also says a multitude, when comedian friends of hers try to get her on their TV shows but the 'industry' think she is just TOO wobbly to be on mainstream TV. Accepting and liking yourself IS a political act. Fighting against a society and media that bombard us with messages telling us to reach for perfection. Messages that tell us we will only be happy if we look a certain way, have a certain job, buy a big enough house, and buy the latest labels. We need to be reiterating to our children [and ourselves] on a daily basis that we are brilliant, just the way we are.
We need more positive [and realistic] representations of disability out there. To show people that having a disability is not some plight that we are afflicted with, that having a disability is not a bad thing. It is just a part of everyday life, and that we should be grateful for our amazing bodies [in whatever form they take] Best advice from Francesca?
"If you hate your job, chuck it in, life is too short not to be doing something you believe in'
Amen to that!

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart wrenching but highly important journalism...., 27 May 2014

Many war correspondent memoirs have been written, but few that have affected me in the way "To the Front and Back Again Please" did....
Harrowing stories are told with great compassion and without exploitation. It is a story of a journalist who is determined to give a voice to those who have never had one. This is a must read for those who want to see beyond the media's lens...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Music Writing Around, 2 Sept. 2013

Having read The Quietus for a good 4 years now, I'm am so pleased that they have created a book containing some of the best music writing out there in the last 5 years. Diverse, unapologetic, always erudite and entertaining to have it all in one publication is a wonderful thing.
Perfect for reading on the bus/tube/ train, anywhere really! Enrich your life a little more by reading this anthology, and at only £5.14, it's one hell of a bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful, Erotic and Powerful piece of work, 15 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Some are claiming that poetry is dead. I could not disagree more. John Siddique's Full Blood brings the reader back to the present. Provocative yet accessible at the same time, you will find yourself devouring every poem, as you would a fine meal. Although erotic in much of its context, it's focus in on love and respect [a perfect example is `Love and The Body'] As if holding a mirror in front of you, and confronting the reader with their deepest humanity, that which usually remains hidden. This is a powerful read, and not for the faint hearted, but it is an important piece of work. One that must find itself at the heart of anyone that loves the written word.
