5.0 out of 5 stars A great insight to modern Moscow, 7 Nov. 2011
This review is from: Snowdrops (Paperback)
As you read Snowdrops, you can see, hear and smell Moscow. Based around a love affair of sorts between an British expat and his Russian girlfriend, this is a story of money, survival and corruption, against a backdrop of the harshest of winters. Really evocative and definitely recommended, particularly if you have an interest in modern Russia.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent holiday read, 4 Jan. 2011
This review is from: Her Fearful Symmetry (Paperback)
If you've read the Time Traveller's Wife, then you're probably ok with suspending disbelief enough to accept the premise on which this book is built. Ghosts flit among the pages - both literal (the spirit of Elspeth) and symbolic (the haunting of all the main characters by an old and buried family secret). This is not a ghost story in the traditional sense, but - like the Time Traveller's Wife - one where spirits are part of the fabric of the story. It's a decent page turner, and the characters are well developed. In my view the book comes apart a bit at its climax, but by the time you get there, you're caught up in the story enough to turn a blind eye. A good, absorbing read - perfect for a long journey or holiday.
