Vax Air Silence Eco Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner
Vax Air Silence Eco Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner
Price: £249.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Adaptable Cleaner -'Approved by Cats?!', 7 Sep 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Going from a traditional upright vacuum cleaner, with a bag to using this Vax Air Silence Eco Cylinder one was a very different but non the less rewarding experience with an added hidden benefit but more of that later!

Using the cylinder version of a vacuum cleaner is easy and simple, and the fact that it is 'bagless' makes the operation more efficient. True, it is 700 watt but it is more efficient in the way it removes dust and of course in the pocket. The one quibble is it does not have a carpet beater, that can be purchased at additional cost, I understand.

The hose is excellent for getting under chairs, sofas, beds and with the attachment for reaching those out of reach places.

The added hidden benefit refers to the quietness of the appliance . With traditional vacuum cleaners the noise levels can be quite high with adverse effects on animals particularly cats! The cat usually makes itself scarce when the old vacuum cleaner was on, but with this Vax one, seems much more content and doesn't head for the cat flap or the furthest point away!

So, an efficient, effective cleaner with an easily adaptable switch to use on hard surfaces and maybe 'approved by cats?!'

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'State of the Art' Iron with a Professional feel. Ideal for all Types of Demand and Use., 24 Aug 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The Philips Perfect Aqua Iron is a 'state of the art' product and makes light-work of a basketful of clothing, sheets and so on.
It's versatility with all manner of fabrics, automatically adjusting from cotton to nylon and to the most delicate of items is a great advantage.

I have had an 'ordinary' Philips steam iron for many years, and it has done a good job, so no complaints there.
However, this latest model is a giant step towards perfection.

The positives are,
You can iron for longer as the container/stand has a large capacity of water, utilised for the steam.
You don't have to alter the settings as it is done automatically.
The iron itself is lighter in weight and easier to use and longer as a result. (No aching arms!)
The results of it's use are perfect, with the ready access of steam.

There are no negatives in terms of performance. However the total size of the iron with the container/stand is larger of course.
It can rest quite easily at the end of the ironing board although occasionally I have placed the stand/container on a worktop adjoining the ironing board.

It has all the hallmarks of a professional iron-and for a large family, with lots of demand-an ideal product.

I have used it for almost a month and found it to be without issues and produces good results.
The instant steam feature is excellent.
All in all, a really good product. Recommended.

A Love Like Blood
A Love Like Blood
by Marcus Sedgwick
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £16.55

3.0 out of 5 stars "A Love Like Blood, 15 Aug 2014
This review is from: A Love Like Blood (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Marcus Sedgwick is an established writer of children's books and young adult fiction, but "A Love Like Blood," marks a step into the adult with this tale of vampires.

In 1944, Charles Jackson, a qualified medic, specialising in haematology, is in Paris, as an army officer, when he has what can best be described as a life changing experience , when he stumbles across the murder of a young woman. Looking into the bunker he catches sight of the perpetrator in the act of committing the crime. Repulsed by what he has seen, he runs away but eventually returns to verify what he saw, was real. The murderer and the body has gone, but what is left, is blood.

Blood, is the overarching theme of this novel, together with Jackson's pursuit of the man responsible, the narrative whips along at pace, as the obsessed medic, who had returned to Cambridge , is drawn back to Paris.

On his return to the French capital, he recognises the man, with Marian, an attractive young woman he subsequently falls in love with. Her death, at the hands of Verovkin, dominates the life of Jackson.

There are one too many coincidences in the tale, for my liking and the fact that on the face of it, a brilliant scholar, could fall for so many conveniently laid traps, is perhaps stretching it a bit far.

That said, if vampire hunting is to your taste, this could be for you.

Oral-B Pro 600 CrossAction Electric Rechargeable Toothbrush Powered by Braun
Oral-B Pro 600 CrossAction Electric Rechargeable Toothbrush Powered by Braun
Price: £24.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent toothbrush -Efficient and Effective, 15 Aug 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Having exhausted my other electric toothbrush , this was an ideal opportunity to give the Braun Oral B Pro 600 a run for its money, and if we are talking money, the list price is very competitive.

The CrossAction process on the toothbrush is for me, a new innovation, and it worked particularly well. The cleaning process was very efficient, leaving your mouth having a 'fresh' feel. The brush, oscillates, rotates and pulsates as it cleans your teeth. One slight quibble, is that it is slightly more noisy. That said it is very effective.

It is rechargeable, but should last for seven days, on the basis that you are using twice a day for two minutes duration. I have to say I have not recharged the device and it lasted for twice that long! So a good deal financially and ecologically.

All in all, an excellent toothbrush. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars This slick BBC production is brilliantly presented, finely acted and richly atmospheric, 10 Aug 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Ordeal by Innocence, written by Agatha Christie, was originally published in 1958 and was a Crime Club Book Choice. It was noted at the time as one of her darker works but also as one of her favourites. It evolves around the perceptions of innocence.

This BBC Radio 4 dramatisation gives it a refreshingly updated feel whilst retaining the original storyline.
Whilst serving a sentence for killing his adoptive mother, (and protesting his innocence,) Jacko Argyle dies in prison.
His alibi for the homicide, Doctor Calgary, is subsequently involved in a road traffic accident and is in a coma, only recovering
consciousness, a little over a year later.

Upon learning of the fate of Jack Argyle, and knowing his innocence, Calgary resolves to put things right and begins an investigation to reveal the true identity of the killer. In so doing he has to persuade a sceptical senior detective, and a family, who both adopt a 'let sleeping dogs lie approach,' for entirely different reasons.

Calgary is nothing but persistent and determined much to the frustration and irritation of the family members, although he does find one ally, who is found murdered. The plot gets thicker. He patiently unravels the pieces of the jigsaw.

This slick BBC production is brilliantly presented, finely acted and richly atmospheric.

This excellent drama is ideal to play in the car, download onto your MP3 player or at home on a CD player in your favourite armchair. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compact, Attractively Designed Kitchen Appliance - That Will Save You Time !, 10 Aug 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The Russell Hobbs Slice and Go provides an easy and efficient alternative to those tasks when preparing vegetables and salads.
It is attractively designed, if you are leaving it out on your worktop, or if not it does not take up much space in your cupboard.
There is an instruction leaflet making it easy to follow when assembling the appliance.
There are three different types of cutters, slicer, coarse grater and fine grater.

I have used it on a number of occasions for a myriad of tasks, including slicing onions and grating carrots. Say goodbye to endlessly manually grating cheese! Simply put the food at the top of the tube and gently, using the pusher force it down. It then comes out sliced or grated into a bowl. It's completed in seconds.

After use, the cutters and tubes can be easily cleaned -and they are dishwasher proof.

One of the virtues of the device is that it provides a quick and easy method to complete those preparatory and tedious jobs when cooking.

All in all, a useful addition to your kitchen.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Triumphant Return for Westerman and Crowther, 31 May 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Prepare to have yourself transported back to the murky world of a side to Georgian England which is often ignored. Imogen Robertson's creation of Harriet Westerman and Gabriel Crowther, the eighteenth century sleuths, return to investigate the death of of a West Indies planter. It is a dramatic start to an excellent book, from an assured author. The sordid and dangerous world of the slave trade is explored, with vested interest and powerful connections involved in what is revealed as a lucrative business. They will stop at nothing to conceal and protect what they have.

A credible feeling of sense of place is skilfully portrayed as Westerman and Crowther slowly unpick the pieces of the puzzle. This is a tale of murder, deceit, hypocrisy and ruthlessness. For me, it is a perfectly structured book with strong characters.

Although this is the fifth story in this outstanding series, they may be read as stand alone novels although having read them all it is fascinating to note the progression of the two protagonists.

This is historical fiction at it's best. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Colder War-Another Cracker from Charles Cumming, 24 May 2014
This review is from: A Colder War (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
"A Colder War," sets the bar even higher in terms of the spy novel. I have to declare immediately that I am an avid fan of Charles Cumming's work and have eagerly read all his books from the start beginning with "A Spy by Nature." His books have increasingly developed a cohesiveness with sharp dialogue, expertly plotted, with an authentic feel to the story.

The tale is a clever one, set in a refreshingly different location, Istanbul, with a contemporary plot and seemingly unconnected events, all coming together.

Thomas Kell, the British agent, whose career was resurrected in A Foreign Country, is tasked with investigating the death of the local Head of Station. A 'mole' is suspected and the pace of narrative is relentless as Kell unravels the pieces of the jigsaw. It's not all plain sailing of course as he is obliged to work alongside a CIA agent, who had a part in his fall from grace. Kell is a rounded character with even a love interest brilliantly portrayed by the author.

A Colder War is not only a first class thriller providing a glimpse of the intelligence world but a book which is compelling and addictive.
In terms of the world of espionage stories this is gold standard.
