Tascam DR-100 Digital Voice Recorder
Tascam DR-100 Digital Voice Recorder

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent field recorder., 3 Dec 2011
A superb piece of kit, the Tascam lives up to the brand and reputation for quality. I chose the DR-100 after doing a lot of research online, and it was a choice between the Tascam and the Zoom H4N recorder. In the end the Tascam won out due to it's far superior build quality and the manual volume wheel controls. If you are looking for the best portable digital recorder for video in this price range, then look no further.

3.0 out of 5 stars Realistic Track Plans For Small Switching Layouts, 20 Dec 2010
8 Realistic Track Plans for Small Switching Layouts by Lance Mindheim is a very short book, it is only 50 pages, and those pages have a fair amount of text in large font sizes, single images or even large amounts of blank space.

I bought this book as part of my preparation for building a small shelf type layout, so perhaps I was a little misled by the title. There are certainly 8 interesting track plans in the book, but to call them 'small' is perhaps not entirely accurate, all of the plans in this book are designed to take up an entire rooms, with 12x11 foot space requirements, which means you are expected to have a spare room specifically for the layout.

Lance has some sound practical advice on building benchwork and presenting layouts, but unfortunately this aspect of the book only runs to a few paragraphs.

The prototype images that accompany each layout plan are light on detail, and more of these would have been a very welcome addition, especially as the Author seems to have visited the real locations for each proposed layout in person, and presumeably has take many more reference photographs.

I came to the book after discovering Lances website, and some of the information in this book is already covered in greater detail there, so if you are already familar with Lances website about his outstanding Florida based HO layout, then like me, you might be surprised not to see more detail on that layout in this book.

Overall, this book is probably a little too light on content to be truly worth the £13 price tag in my opinion, but if the price were lower then it would be worth picking up. I haven't yet read his other books, but my experience with this one has actually made me reconsider my order for one of his other titles.

Perhaps if the Amazon description for this book clearly described the size requirements for the layouts, and their need for a 12x11 foot space, then I would have been less disappointed with this book.

I also have his 'How to design small switching layouts' on order, and it may be that that title will be more what I am looking for.

Sentinel II
Sentinel II
by Sydney J. Mead
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Future Visions!, 9 Nov 2006
This review is from: Sentinel II (Paperback)
This book is basically a re-issue of the original late-seventies "Sentinel" but with superior printing and a few re-ordered pages. Some of the original sketches are missing in this version, but it is still an amazing book.

The designs showcased in Sentinel II span decades, and the older work has a fantastic retro feel, especially the US Steel portfolio work, depicting hover cars and other vehicles in great detail.

The majority of the images are of cars, but Mead does tackle other subjects, spacecraft, buildings and ships are all depicted with the same clarity and reality that would later define the worlds of major movies such as Bladerunner.

All in all, this is an awesome book, and a definite must-have for anyone interested in design or sci-fi imagery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vanishing Point - The Ultimate Road Movie, 16 Sep 2002
This review is from: Vanishing Point [1971] [DVD] (DVD)
This is it! Available at last on DVD, and for the first time in Widescreen! The counterculture movie that takes on 'Easy Rider' head to head, and creates a movie that is just as fresh and exciting now as it was thirty years ago.

Barry Newman plays Kowalski, the 'Last American Hero' thundering through the deserts of the American west, pedal firmly to the metal.

Kowalski has made a bet that he can deliver a customers supercharged Dodge Challenger from Denver to San Francisco in just fifteen hours... an impossible task that is made even more unlikely by the legions of Highway Patrol officers who are determined to halt him.

A fantastic film, easily one of the finest road movies of all-time, and definitely among my top five favorite films. You won't be dissapointed with this purchase!

A funked out soundtrack and the most spectacular car chase this side of the original 'Gone in 60 Seconds'.

Thank you 20th Century Fox!

Now all we need is a release for 'Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry' :)
