5.0 out of 5 stars bay of pigs and snoopy, 17 Oct 2011
Only Alistair Cook could be as mesmerising talking about Snoopy the Dog as about the Cuba Missile Crisis. Played this in the car when holiday took us out of range of Radio Four. This is when the BBC was at its best.

4.0 out of 5 stars silly and delightful, 14 Oct 2011
Hard to read this book without smiling. Anyone with a sense of irony (and if you speak yiddish, irony comes as standard) will love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars good gift, 14 Oct 2011
Dinner guests gave me this book instead of flowers and the pleasure will certainly last a lot longer. Those rhymes and rules we learnt at school still work better than any other way of remembering everyday things. Both useful and nostalgic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good feedback so far, 13 Oct 2011
Sent the "fresher" in the family off to a new life alone with this book. Reports from the front indicate that our university student is not starving far away from the family table.

4.0 out of 5 stars Back seat saviour, 13 Oct 2011
Since the whole family now knows the words to all the songs from the TV series this was a great back seat pacifier during our recent holiday. And the stories meant that the children were not bored when we did grown-up sightseeing as names from French history made sense and often inspired a snigger.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great problem solver, 12 Oct 2011
This review is from: Jewish Book of Why (Hardcover)
This book came into its own over the high holy days this month. Sitting around the house at this time of year means lots of arguements and debate over the rules and regs of jewishness. We had fun using the book as referee.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, 28 Aug 2011
This review is from: Chinese Kosher Cooking (Paperback)
A really good idea. Given as a house gift by dinner guests. Found really good ideas for imaginative eating at home, for all the family no matter how kosher or veggie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Irony for Beginners, 5 Aug 2011
I have a good collection of yiddish books and dictionaries and this addition to my bookshelf is entertaining reading. In it the author captures the oblique ironies of the language. In yiddish an insult can sound like a gift. It is not a book to make anyone profficient in speaking yiddish. But it is a great help in appreciating the nuances of the phrases we slip into our own speech.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nu? a dictionary already, 2 Jun 2011
You won't find the intonation in a dictionary, but you might just find the irony. This is a usable and practical dictionary, rather than an instruction manual to the phrases your grandmother still uses. Found it great translating lyrics to songs on cd sleeves

The Jews of France: A History from Antiquity to the Present
The Jews of France: A History from Antiquity to the Present
by Esther Benbassa
Edition: Paperback
Price: £22.62

5.0 out of 5 stars Important balance, 19 Mar 2011
There is a lot of rather frightening misinformation circulating in the email propaganda war or paranoia that suggests France is at the vanguard of anti-semitism. Even the fact that Holocaust denial and racism against Jews is a criminal offence in France (unlike many "enlightened" regimes), the rumour mill will always try to sell the idea that France is a dangerous place to be. Actually, the long story is one of assimilation (some fear and persecution naturally, but then so goes the history of protestantism as well) and of a well judged balance between cultural pride and assimilation and freedom to worship. Since I bought a home in France, I have found the French and Jewish communities to blend in well together. The book puts present day life in the context of a varied history of Papal protectorates, the Dreyfus affair, the War and recent immigration. A good addition to the bookshelf for anyone without a spam filter. Rational history is the best defence against the free flow of ignorance.
