What was causing my pain??
"Me" is the not the answer most people expect to hear - or even want to hear...
However, learning how to "get better" is normally a very interesting and unusual journey for anyone who suffers from ongoing acute and chronic pain - whether that be physical or emotional.
The voice is a users manual on creating a healthier and more user friendly relationship with yourself by discovering and nurturing your own "inner voice".
This isn't as simple as it sounds - and there's usually more than one voice - what most people experience is a highly unhelpful critical voice - and yet we also have a helpful healing voice - if only we could create the framework to "hear it".
As with most self help books - there is a process to follow - and with this book - that's where the fun starts straight away - "The critical Voice" appears almost instantly...
It's very "experiential" this getting better lark and this book - more so than most.
The actual process Dr Alman lays out is a simple 3 step model that brings awareness rather than reaction and may seem initially "too simple" to be of use - "The critical Voice kicking in again" and this is what I found so valuable when reading though and practicing the "mind exercises". I suffered from excruciating back back for many years - similar to the author - and chose to learn "how to get better" and am still learning how to get better at "getting better" and this is why I continually choose to learn from books such as this one.
The other interesting thing about books such as this one is that you don't need to believe anything - you just have to experience your self - as you participate in your experience of taking in the information set out in the 4 chapters. Well worth buying for your "getting better" collection...

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple stuff that works..., 23 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Great book and wonderful free resources from Dave's website. I'm reading more and more nutrition related stuff from the world of bodybuilding and weight lifting because low fat / low calorie doesn't seem to work for the majority of people and I keep hearing the same message. Eat for strength and learn how to use your muscles on a daily basis. There's a great chapter on "Boring Menu's" and Dave explains in some detail how helpful learning how to record, measure and tweak your own personalised standard balanced menu will be in healthy weight loss. This book also has a great list of 38 core exercises to learn on your journey to wellness and is also written in a very direct, down to earth style which I found easy to connect with. Well worth learning from...

5.0 out of 5 stars One simple and truthful word - Brilliant..., 9 Sep 2013
This is a very well written book that has the ability to change your life for the better - very quickly...

One thing is "real" and extremely helpful in explaining the "how to" create a strategy for success.

I took this book away with me for a couple of weeks on my summer holiday and read it 3 or 4 times because I'm in the middle of a process that needed me to choose "one thing" above all others and it helped - a lot...

As most people find out - to their detriment - staying focused on one thing is not as straight forward as it seems - multitasking is an illusion - and the authors have a lovely way of telling their story in a way that is both engaging and interesting - and most importantly - in a way that you can learn from it and actually apply the knowledge they want to share - in your own life...

Well worth buying as a resource and reference - because books like this are few and far between...

Jamie's 30-Minute Meals: A Revolutionary Approach to Cooking Good Food Fast
Jamie's 30-Minute Meals: A Revolutionary Approach to Cooking Good Food Fast
by Jamie Oliver
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 12.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Good food fast..., 22 July 2013
I love the idea of cooking good food fast - rather than fast food. And I also love the way the book is laid out - and most importantly it is really easy to follow and enjoyable to do - as well as eat...

I am relearning to cook - because I teach weight loss (amongst other things) and it makes sense to cook stuff you like - experiment - learn and play about in the kitchen and make it fun...

And it also makes sense to learn about portion sizes - food ingredients - menus - equipment - and anything else that is helpful - and I like Jamie and the way he is so passionate about what he does.

And he does it really well - my favourite menu so far has been the cauliflower macaroni, salad and stewed fruit - really simple and tasty...

I also like the fact it doesn't mention calories because I ask people I work with to "work out" the nutritional values - including calories with something like the MyFitnessPal App - as it makes the learning fun - and you get to eat well - rather than believe "getting better" involves deprivation and hunger...

Brilliant book...

The Bluffer's Guide to Surfing (Bluffer's Guides)
The Bluffer's Guide to Surfing (Bluffer's Guides)
by Craig Jarvis
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Ripping it up..., 30 Jun 2013
I got a copy of this book because one of my brothers live near a beach, and the other's a deep sea diver - strange but true...

And I wanted something in common - so I got a book about the sea - or more specifically surfing. Anyway, the book is quite small - like a book you would give someone as a present - or as an afterthought because they were interested in the subject it's written about. And it's brilliant. It has actually made me realise surfing is one of those things that I just never got round to - and now probably won't - due to my advancing years. And yet, I'm thinking about going to Hawaii and giving it a bash at some stage.

The contents cover enough factual info to let you "blag it" or "bluff" your way by dropping a few names - or history - or surfing terms so that you sound knowledgable even if you've never been near a surf board. But, the writing flows so well - I began wondering if it would help my bluffing skills by putting surfing on my "bucket list" and just doing a surfing holiday at some stage - and that's what I loved about this book - it made me want to do a bit of surfing - rather than bluff...

As this is part if a series - am wondering what will happen if I buy the guide to sex...

Great little book to while away an afternoon in the sunshine - have been meaning to read this for ages - and today the sun came out - and read it over a couple of hours whilst sitting in the sun - was a really enjoyable afternoon...

Well worth buying - and will probably pick up another "Bluffers Guide" next time I'm at the airport in WHSmith...

Skinny Bitch
Skinny Bitch
by Rory Freedman
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Smarten up and get "Skinny"..., 30 Jun 2013
This review is from: Skinny Bitch (Paperback)
This is one of the first books that I bought more than one copy of to give to people I know.

In fact I bought 5 copies and set up a little "skinny bitch" group - I specialise in weight loss, addiction and a few other things - because I knew the information in this book could change lives...
Everyone lost weight - and also changed the way they viewed the food chain - and how they related their "weight issue" to what is actually going on. Lots of people are realising you need "a way of life" rather than a diet - and this book helps to show you an alternative way to "get skinny"...
The book is written in a very provocative way - designed to grab your attention - and hopefully keep it - whilst explaining how food manufacturers are poisoning us - committing terrible atrocities to animals - adding addictive substances to what we drink - and smashing the environment to bits. And it's a brilliant read. The only way to make a difference is to actually do something with the information though - and that's the bit where most of us struggle - and that's why I bought 5 copies and set up a group. People help people get better - lose weight - overcome the nasty, self critical voice and generally just provide some much needed support. Just by going vegan for one day a week will save more animals than doing nothing - so have a think about meat free Mondays...

The best part of the book for me was chapter 13 - make healthy choices and take excellent care of yourself without getting neurotic and obsessive. And that for me sums up all of this "getting better" lark - learn something - apply it - and keep learning...

How To Have A Beautiful Mind
How To Have A Beautiful Mind
by Edward de Bono
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple stuff that works wonders..., 29 Jun 2013
"To have a beautiful mind you must genuinely seek to find points of agreement with whom you are talking. Surprisingly this is the most difficult aspect of all"...

Not in my world - living within a family who all suffer with the righteousness gene - I am not surprised with the difficulty of having a beautiful mind...

I am grateful for Edward for pointing out a process that works wonders and helps quieten the shouting - it seems my family also "believe" that if we shout at each other louder than the other person - then we are communicating at an optimum level...

Just wish this was written a few decades earlier - and my mother and father had bought it...

Love the idea of continually actioning and practicing and sharing having a beautiful mind.

Great book and worth it's weight in gold...

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant little book..., 29 Jun 2013
If you learn just one of Dominic's techniques then you will be well on the way to improving lots of different areas of your life.

I love little books like this because they're great to just flick through now and again and re-read or try out one of the techniques again...

Memory skills are one way of "staying young" and overcoming some of the problems of getting old - and for those younger persons - books like this give you a serious advantage when taking exams or attending job interviews...

I personally like the way the book is set out - memory tool number 3 Acronyms is something I use a lot when I teach people - and I like to recommend books like this and also the Tony Buzan Memory one.

I wish they would teach a course like this in our schools because it is so useful. Anyway, brilliant little book and well worth investing in...

The Power Laws: The Science of Success
The Power Laws: The Science of Success
by Richard Koch
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars The Law of "doing something better"..., 23 Jun 2013
Although this book is now nearly 15 years old - it's still one of the books I continually dip in and out of...

I first came across Richard Koch via his fantastic book - The 80/20 Principle and have taught my take on it to most people I work with.

The Power Laws is a sort of follow up and relates interesting theories - Power Laws - in relation to business - however the "laws" can be very helpful to you in general and not just if you're in business.

There's a total of 17 major laws and 76 minor ones - the criteria being:
* The power law must be a coherent theory of how things work, with wide acceptance among scientists.
* The power law must transcend the discipline where it originated, and be used in more than one scientific discipline.
* The power law must be capable of application to business.

Because of the second criteria - there is some seriously useful information for whatever your specialism is. I have been teaching weight loss strategies for quite a while now and love skimming through this book looking for helpful information.

There's a great bit of info on page 91 regarding neuro plasticity and how brain scans have shown that obsessive-compulsive disorders can be cured / moderated by deliberate action - by thinking about other things - consciously rewiring the circuits... And this helps to explain how to overcome cravings and sugar addiction...

There's another great bit on game theory and the crucial human ingredient - trust and mutual trust - there's even an instinct for niceness...

This is still a great book and well worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tool for weight loss..., 22 Jun 2013
Really useful for mixing protein shakes and simple to clean - just rinse under the tap. The jug is actually why I bought it because I had a cheaper blender but I couldn't find a jug so I bought a Philips one as my brothers got this one - as well as a juicer and it works fine...
