5.0 out of 5 stars Glad to see it resurface as a film, 16 Mar 2014
This review is from: Under The Skin (Paperback)
I haven't yet seen the film adaptation, but this book's strong, spare story had stayed with me since 2000. At that time I wondered who would take the plunge and make the film. Lyn Ramsay because she was the latest hot director and Scottish? On the surface it seemed easy. A working alien. A fascinating day job. Wondering where it was going to end. Not minding because each day was a new story, a new puzzle to solve. When the ending came, it peeled back the final layer. Very satisfying. Back then Scarlett Johannson would have been an inconceivable choice for role. Her last movie had been as a child in The Horse Whisperer. Her transmutation into the world's favourite fantasy hadn't started. I'm sure the film will bring another dimension, but like all good stories, the book will give you more. You'll be on a long dark read with no idea where you are going to end up.

5.0 out of 5 stars After 3000 books this one is still my favourite, 4 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A fully realised work of imagination with well rounded characters, a colourful plot that keeps you galloping and a detached writing style that provokes absorption rather than repulsion. After 10 reads over 25 years, it's still the only book I've read more than once, Pride and Prejudice excepted. It's the novel against which all crime thrillers can be measured.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cringeworthy 'acting', 4 Sep 2012
This review is from: Wallander - Series 3 [DVD] (DVD)
The Swedish Wallander series are excellent. The lead actors in both series are personable in the role.

Krister Henriksson is the best Wallander because he adds some deadpan humour.

The British version is appalling. All that winsome, vulnerable characterisation makes you want to puke, or swiftly switch off.

Kenneth Branagh can't act his way out of a paper bag. He's such a wimp, the laughable policeman.

Don't buy it, buy the original.
