Wedlock: How Georgian Britain's Worst Husband Met His Match
by Wendy Moore
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, 5 Jun 2014

Interesting novel-like presentation of history that is so important to understanding chronic inhumanity allowed by systems of law and order that are normally the proud focus of history. A little discouraged by the undertone of interest in boring gossip context of privileged classes (of men).

Unique sample of Shakespearean period poetry, highlighting the difference between Shakespeare and contemporaries, and between them and the poetry of the psalms as translated by them for the King James' Bible. Unlikely to be a popular taste but interested because an ancestor.

Inspiring pictures and texts. Good to know that local people have taken the trouble to clear and restore the old paths for us all. Very grateful to them and to the compilers of this book.

This review is from: Haunted Ely (Paperback)
Informative little book that makes a visit more atmospheric and interesting. Suggest readers visit the gaol there to get a sense of how easy it is to imagine the historical tensions that make believable the feelings people have had that hauntings are possible.

Previously, it had only been possible to view this manuscript in the British Library and it warrants more close study than time there could allow. Originally interested because he was a direct ancestor but the book makes compelling reading in its own right. That it was preserved at all is because of its interest to the Naval records. That it was preserved by Pepys in his Miscellany indicates Pepys' admiration of his character and of those of his grandson and widow. As an autobiography, it pre-dates the novel in style and purpose. His main theme is Puritanical in the non-ranting sense: essentially, he had always been intended for the ministry but cruel turns in the history of his family put him in a position where he alone could protect and sustain them, and only by calling on the God he knew personally to guide him could this be done. This God knew that he would serve them better out of the ministry, rather than in, after all.
