good read, great recollection of Ulster Particularly Belfast in the 50s and 60s but to much jumping around and repeating parts already spoken about earlier in the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars like an earlier book by the same author it is ..., 27 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
like an earlier book by the same author it is just a a copy of the newspaper headlines of the day not an actual history of the force itself . could have been a lot better as a serving police officer myself I was looking for more of a history than just a commentary of incidents.

5.0 out of 5 stars great historical account, 31 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A great account of the raising and devotion to duty of what I and others considered to be one of the most professional police forces in the world . As someone who had relatives serving in the RUC/PSNI and seeing their names in print makes it all the better a fitting tribute to the many men and woman who served the people of all sides in Northern Ireland.

Good story and the historical fact that the RIC eventually was disbanded and then two new forces were raised ( Garda Sochiana and RUC ) to police the two new countries that were formed due to partition was clear to the end. Sorry it tends to try and uphold the supposed fact that members of the Ulster special constabulary were nothing short of criminals in police uniform which was not the case, just as well it is a fictional story but a decent read for those who like any kind of Irish police historical tales.

2.0 out of 5 stars not a great travel book, 2 Oct. 2012

Thought this would be a book where the author/s would at least have made an attempt to show that cruises can be enjoyable. Instead she appeared to go out of her way to show that she was impatient, expected much for little and that there was not much to enjoy. having just returned from a Cunard cruise I basically did not recognise the cunard I sailed with as the same one the author travelled with. Maybe thats just the difference between Scots ( british ) and yanks.
