Don't confuse with books by the "other" Harris - this is rubbish!

To The Last Round: The Epic British Stand on the Imjin River, Korea 1951
Price: £5.03

4.0 out of 5 stars A forgotten war?, 4 Jan. 2013

Gripping page turner account of the Imjin battle, with respectable reference to the other units involved, Fusiliers, Ulster Rifles and Belgians; it wasn't just a Gloucesters battle. Perhaps a bit respectful to the role of the Brigadier and the higher command, where a more forensic approach might be the style for a 2013 writer.

Shaara's style doesn't seem to fit the WW1 scenario as well as it did the Civil War novels he wrote. I was also irritated by the assumption in the book that the USA won WW1 - as well as WW2 presumably - and single handed too, with little help from those pesky Brits! The interplay between Pershing and the US Government is well covered however and, as it frequently the case with historical novels, will encourage me to read more widely in "real" history books about this.

The Long Gray Line: The American Journey of West Point's Class of 1966

A first class history of Vietnam and the effect it had on the American military. To those in the know, it is an interesting contrast between the lives of US graduates from West Point and those who graduated from Sandhurst at about the same time, most of whom went off to Germany to "fight" the Cold War.

Hard to follow and too many characters - a bit like Wolf Hall but in French! I enjoyed Wolf Hall however, so tried this book - but all it does is to encourage me to read a proper history to try to sort out who is who and what actually happened.
