5.0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable., 10 Feb. 2016

Yet another author introduced to me by Amazon.
After reading previous reviews chose to get a four book offer, no regrets, have read them one after another.
My favourite, Midnight in Malmo, a more complex set of plots, which, unusually, kept me guessing to the end.
Believable characters demonstrated by both their strengths & weakness. My only criticism is that at times our writer seems to pad it out with unnecessary detail re not only the history but also the geography of various locations.
A very enjoyable set of books.

4.0 out of 5 stars A gentle tale, 15 Jan. 2016

A gentle tale which I enjoyed very much, illuminating a period of history of which most of us have limited knowledge.

I enjoy this authors books immensely.
The atmosphere of the time brought alive. A little Conan Doylish in parts, but none the worse for that.
An excellent read blending action with humour.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, 15 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Interesting main characters who I'm afraid to say evolve into Batman & Robin cavorting around Olde London Towne.
An easy undemanding read, not terribly strong on historical fact, but like many of this genre goes out of the way to paint an atmosphere of living conditions at the time & of course the great divide twixt the haves & have nots.
Good for the beach.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Brilliant, 2 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am a great fan of Gordon John Thomson, his books are well structured, extremely well researched & above all a very enjoyable read.
Miss Peachy & The Floating World is just a cracking read from the very first page, it helps if you have previously encountered Miss Peachy, only because it's meeting up with old friends, but the narrative refers to previous adventures, which may sound highly improbable but believe me our heroes are capable of anything.
I highly recommend not only this book but the Authors other titles, all very different I hope other readers go on to discover the brilliance of Gordon John Thomson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gory & Blood Spattered, 5 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A fictional plot woven around accurate historical facts.
Mind you the battle scenes will leave you gory & blood spattered.
I particularly like the supporting characters who have developed well over previous titles.
In the final pages Oliver Cromwell appears, warts & all, so will look out for him in the next episode.
Of course the great sadness is that ultimately our hero Stryker has to lose, undoubtedly to escape to France.
A great series, well worth the read.

An enjoyable & educational read.
I had no idea that The Civil War extended to Barbados.
The only criticism I felt it was overlong
Entertaining

5.0 out of 5 stars In the very best tradition of British Crime Writers, 6 Feb. 2014

Once more I have awarded Ann Cleeves five stars, yet again totally believable characters.
In this particular book unusually the body count is up, more akin to Midsommer than Northumberland.
In the very best tradition of British Crime Novels

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read, 6 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have now read all six Inspector Ramsay books, initially the two main characters, Ramsay & Hunter appeared at least to me lukewarm. As the characters evolved so did my enjoyment of the books. I love all the cameo roles that the author introduces from nebby neighbors to fun loving single mothers. All in one way or another essential to the plot.
Located in the gritty North East of England, the geography is described with total accuracy capturing the atmosphere of once vibrant villages, now languishing on the sidelines.
An excellent read
