In view of the Jimmy Saville revelations it is ironic that Val McDermid showed how clever public figures might be able to fool their fans so long before they hit the headlines. The ability to reveal the motivations behind evil acts is, undoubtedly, her forte, and the roller-coaster ride of this novel leaves the reader uncomfortable and wondering at the evil which some are capable of committing.

Taut and tightly plotted, a great read.

An unsettling but satisfying read following the comforting, cosy atmosphere created in the first two novels. The second world war was a time of great unhappiness, but also, for some, a time of adventure and opportunity. Through following the lives of the various members of the Cazalet family this third novel shows the utter confusion of a world where nothing was certain. Relationships developed and lost, uncertainty, fear, misunderstandings and false starts, are all underpinned by the sense of belonging centred on the family base at Home Place.

4.0 out of 5 stars Consolidating change, 29 May 2013

The deceptively entertaining fourth novel in the Cazalet chronicles underlines how much the second world war changed life in Britain. The children of the first novel, now adults, have undergone experiences which will shape their futures in a modern world. They will be very different people to their parents who, themselves, have been changed by the war. The privileged lives of the sheltered, moneyed middle class can no longer be taken for granted and the varied lives of the Cazalet family members mirror the changes in society as a whole.

A bitter-sweet trip down memory lane showing a time of transition in America and capturing the feelings of a generation. Sal's reactions to the places and people he encounters are beautifully expressed and paint a protrait of an America finding a new voice after the Second World War.
