Long Way Home (Zigic & Ferreira 1)
Long Way Home (Zigic & Ferreira 1)
by Eva Dolan
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars Good first novel., 20 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was given this book by someone who reviews books for a living. It is nicely presented and written about my home town - Peterborough. Actually it is all rather dark and sad. I liked the story though and it is well written - a first novel I understand.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots crammed into a neat format., 20 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Well, must say I expected the 16th century stuff, but i got all the whole thing right up to the French Revolution and beyond. I suppose that was a bonus really. The chapters are not really differentiated which makes the book hard to work out. And the print is tiny to fit it all into the slim volume. Delivery was quick, though and the book well presented apart from that. Actually I need it professionally, otherwise i wouldn't have bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Ching, 25 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Oh yes.
If you want to find out about the I Ching - get this one. Over the years I have read several books about Chinese Literature. It is all very inscrutable. This bloke, a Headmaster of a Christian School who got flung in jail by the modernising Mao for twenty years, really knows his stuff. He also knows how to face up to translation. And he has lived the I Ching in the Tao too.
Get it immediately and then read it very very slowly like sucking a sweet.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful to teach English, 4 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a book which is useful to hand to other teachers to gain confidence. It presents a lot of pictures clearly.
Problems: it is not A4, so copying it is going to be hard. It can work, however, with just a few people in a very intimate group (!)
The layout is a bit clustered perhaps.
But on the whole, I think it will be useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it, 4 May 2014

This is exactly the book which I need for my English lessons. It deals with conversations the people are likely to have.
It arrived bang on time and I shall certainly be using it when I teach.

A History of West Africa
A History of West Africa
by Basil Davidson
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, 19 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a really good history of West Africa.
If you are infected by a love of West Africa, and I am, then this is a book which goes back a long way and sorts out the various ethnicities (aka tribes) and religious input for you clearly and with understanding and fairness.
Two buts.
But it is rather ancient now and a bit out of date really.
But I am not interested, really in Eastern or Southern Africa, so if you aren't really interested in West Africa, perhaps you might like to look elsewhere. It is a book for nerdy people like me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Why not?, 19 Mar. 2014

Yeah, it is all right.
Good read. But you are not looking at Jack Reacher or Sherlock Holmes.
The sort of book you might use to while away a flight.

The Book of Chuang Tzu (Penguin Classics)

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, 19 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I chose this rating because this is a Chinese classic and it deserves no less.
I like the translation - vital for a classic of this kind. I like the thoughts so carefully expressed. It is like toffee - it needs careful chewing.
Faults? Well this isn't a book you can skim. It needs very careful thought, although it seems deceptively easy to read. Then you have to try and put it into practice...
If you are a thoughtful person, genuinely seeking self- improvement then this could be the book for you. If you want entertainment, it has some good bits and a real insight into politics and polite behaviour.

The Elements of Eloquence: How to Turn the Perfect English Phrase
The Elements of Eloquence: How to Turn the Perfect English Phrase
by Mark Forsyth
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £10.39

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of the Elements, 25 Feb. 2014

This book is superb.
It is wittily written.
It is very helpful when you want to write stuff like Tweets or blogs of comments.
It is comprehensive and Mark Forsyth is also a humble man.
And not all of us experts in English language are humble.
Although I am.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Confucius, 25 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a really good translation, easy to read and very easy to follow.
I enjoyed reading about his travels, his way of treating his students and his love of behaving well.
If you aren't particularly religious, it is a good guide for how to be a gentleman.
Where it falls down, for me, is that there is very little attempt to answer the big questions: death, after death, God, why behave well anyway?
But I still give it the full number of stars.
