Gives hope and fear in equal measure, 12 Aug 2014
I'm an avid Monbiot reader and received this book for Christmas. I read through it twice and it has changed the way I look at the world.
This is a great read for anybody who struggles with the complexity of the usual political analysis. The writing is rigorously researched and lucidly written and makes the intricate economic and financial workings of the world, along with the disparity and poverty they perpetuate, easily comprehensible.
Monbiot tears down the shroud under which such formidable institutions as the IMF and UN operate to reveal an ugly and insidious truth. He then offers hope in the form of a number of well thought proposals designed to be the building blocks of a global democracy which will help the world's people unite in order to face the problems and issues which affect everybody regardless of race, religion or nationality.
Monbiot is a bastion of transparency and accountability being one of the few commentators to advocate a full disclosure of financial interests for any and all writers, reporters and analysts.
His vision will not be easy to bring about, but no worthwhile worldwide changes ever are.
