These make for compelling reading and deals with a side of WWII that has perhaps not been aired enough before. Heroism is there, yes, but the meticulous planning to the disruption of the German war machine is the highlight.

I am most disappointed to find that this product, though advertised as the same as that which I bought just over a year ago, is slightly different.
The difference might not be great but the sheets will not feed through my printer. I still have some sheets left over from last years purchase and when I tried those they fed perfectly. Either the paper is just a tad thicker or smoother or less flexible. I can only print one sheet at a time and even then am not garunteed success. A poor purchase. I still have some of both lots and find it difficult to see or feel the difference but the printer knows only too well!

A History of the World

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read, 20 Feb 2013

This review is from: A History of the World (Hardcover)
As ever with Andrew Marr one has a sensible and well constructed story. Although the topic seems too big his pen flows easily from one culture to another.
Well worth reading though it looks a rather daunting length.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read for youngsters, 1 Feb 2013

I have given this book to two of my grand daughters as presents and both have been thrilled to the point where they want to read more by the same author. This is so often the yardstick of the average person in the street who is not able to or interested in giving a "newspaper type" review. That children "want more" is sufficient to mark a work out as well thought out and interestingly written. Judging by the response to further books by the same author bought and given it is not just one book that sows the seeds of enjoyable reading. This series of books is excellent for young people, allowing their imagination to carry them away as they read.

Home-run to the Olympics

4.0 out of 5 stars Home-Run, 23 Oct 2012
Home-run to the Olympics
Although many admire the achievements of international sportsmen and women few will be able to relate to the mind set of such dedicated individuals. In "Home-Run to the Olympics" Ponting uses an admirable disguise of normal life to highlight the peculiar problems of the aspiring athlete. His central character, Marianne Eisemann, is depicted working in two boarding schools, one in Germany in the other in the United Kingdom, having romantic relationships with staff in both schools and is, rather topically, hunting down a long lost father. Whereas such activities are all consuming at the time to most people; to Marianne they can be swept aside in her quest to be "the best". Poignantly the peak of her career is timed to coincide with the Munich Olympics of 1972. This was a "Games", the prospective reader might recall, which signalled another low point for the movement wherein numerous athletes were taken hostage and murdered. Our heroine faces up to the challenges of personal relationships and injury as well as the twin peaks of success and failure, with a single-minded courage which marks her out as a performer unlike others. Indeed while insisting on competing in the Munich Olympics without the need for those closest to her in the stadium, she faces humiliating failure in the final of the 400m to go on to grit her teeth and compete again after the international debacle in another final, that of the 800m. This book shines a rare light on the person we would now call "a professional sportsman" giving us an insight into what is needed to drive oneself to the highest levels of competition and, as such, is a compelling read. It is a must for those who want to try to get into the mind of our recent Olympics stars - to learn what was required to bring home those 29 gold medals. (Derek Sederman)
