Goldacre is always good value. Perhaps a bit repetitive at times but the shaky foundations of assertions is well exposed by this author.

A book that should be read by everyone; quite remarkable in the depth of research and range of topics covered. At times it made me so angry at the way in which the 'Establishment' has contrived to promote its own self perpetuating ideas.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked this book, 7 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I liked this book,.It is factual and made interesting by the exploits of the various gang members and the reactions of the police and magistrates. Whilst the storyline seemed somewhat repetitive at times it was nevertheless fascinating to see how the gangs were eventually destroyed by the persistence of the police with decisive and strong arm tactics.

This review is from: Borderline (Paperback)
This to me was far from the usual standard of Lisa Marklund's writing. There was no interesting plot to follow, rather it was an account of her partner being kidnapped and eventually released. Quite believable, but really a pot-boiler type of book.

Then & Now The Sheffield Blitz: Operation Crucible
Then & Now The Sheffield Blitz: Operation Crucible

3.0 out of 5 stars Some really excellent illustrations to show the effect of the German bombing, 7 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Some really excellent illustrations to show the effect of the German bombing. It was interesting to see the photographs of the rebuilt sites after the blitz. The supporting text was quite uneven, so for me the highlights of the book was in the pictures rather than the written word.

Not Me: Memoirs of a German Childhood
Not Me: Memoirs of a German Childhood
by Joachim C. Fest

5.0 out of 5 stars A inspiring book about life in Hitler's Germany before and during WW2, 27 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I liked this book and have recommended it to my friends. It provides a different perspective than the one that one usually hears on WW2. It shows the problems that Fest and his family had in not supporting the Hitler regime and how they were made to pay for sticking to their principles. It shows that life could be grim for people who were not Nazi supporters. As well as getting an insider's view of life in Hitler's Germany prior to and during the war, there is the opportunity to see aspects of the German educational system during these times. I generally do not read autobiographies, since I feel that they can easily become slanted to put over ideas that the author wishes to make, which may well be an exaggeration. I feel that this may occur in this book as Fest go to some length at times to show how well read he is . This is a book that deserves a wide audience and one can only have an admiration for people like Joachim Fest and his family.

Madame Bovary's Ovaries: A Darwinian Look at Literature
Madame Bovary's Ovaries: A Darwinian Look at Literature
by David P. Barash
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.45

4.0 out of 5 stars An amusing take on the connections between literature and evolution, 27 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Fascinating look at the connections between some carefully chosen books and Darwin's ideas on evolution. This is quite humorous at times and very readable. Lots of interesting parallels between the human world and the non-human world.
The reader is unlikely to learn a great deal about evolution but will come away quite amazed and the depth of reading that Barash and his daughter has done in the preparation of this work. It runs out of steam towards the end, but nevertheless is a book that can be read with pleasure and does not require any deep knowledge of Darwin's ideas.
