3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected!, 26 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I ordered this clothes stand to replace a valet stand which was at least 30 years' old. This one seems quite fragile and was too easy to assemble. It is very small - barely reaches the level of my waist. It is so small and simple that I am reluctant to say it is good value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delight., 8 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Train in Spain (Hardcover)
I am an avid reader of the author's regular articles in the Daily Telegraph and immensely enjoyed his previous book "A Pilgrim in Spain". He takes us on journeys to Spain which would not occur to most visitors and his observations and information whet one's appetite to visit the places he goes to. This is a wonderful travelogue - his descriptions of his travels and the places he visits are spot on. Enhorabuena, Mr Howse! I can't wait for your next trip to Spain!

2.0 out of 5 stars Run of the mill!, 19 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having read Giles Tremlett's Catherine of Aragon, I had great expectations for this book by Professor Williams. Regrettably, it is repetitive and badly edited and adds nothing new to the history of the sad life of this admirable Queen of England.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well produced and acted., 13 Oct. 2013
I ordered my product direct from Amazon Spain as I find the subtitles spoil the enjoyment of viewing.

Historically speaking this production is generally quite accurate but Isabel's half brother, the King, was much older than her and she and Alfonso were taken to the Court from Arévalo when she was under ten years old NOT in her teens. There are other historical facts that have been exaggerated or omitted.

I look forward to Season 2 .

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a disappointment!, 19 Sept. 2013
The first two seasons of this Spanish soap opera were quite entertaining. The third season, and longest, was rather disappointing as it lasted too long and there were far too many sub plots going around. Also, we knew that eventually Alicia and Julio would defy all their problems and go off together so there was no surprise there.

I think this third season could have been divided into two seasons - more suspense, perhaps. Still. I'm pleased I bought it - stopped my Spanish getting too rusty!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shameful behaviour of the Church, 24 Jan. 2013
Excellent account from Fr Hilari Raguer about the atrocious behaviour of the hierarchy of the Church before, during and after the Spanish Civil War. Franco, in his haste to gain international approval for his actions, conspired with the Church to make the Nationalists be seen as leading a "religious crusade" against the Republicans and their "allies", the Communists , the Jews and Freemasons.

This book should be read with Paul Preston's "The Spanish Holocaust" - the two books complement each other.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining!, 11 Dec. 2012
Gran Hotel is a typical Latin "telenovela" - too many subplots all going on at the same time. However, it is very entertaining and I look forward to the next episode and the next series. Whether it accurately portrays the Spain of 1905 is, perhaps, questionable.

The star, Amaia Salamanca, is excellent and I believe she will, one day, become as popular outside the Spanish speaking world as Penélope Cruz and Selma Hayek.

5.0 out of 5 stars More delights from el Maestro!, 9 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Enrique Chia seems to have got "into the skins" of Los Panchos with his versions of their famous boleros.

Just pour your rum and coke or your margarita, make yourself comfortable in your favourite chair, press the the "play" button and close your eyes - you will be taken back 50 years to your romantic youth.

Delightful! Viva el Maestro Chia!

PS The fifty years only applies to me! No offence meant to anyone!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed!, 9 Oct. 2012

I am a very open minded mature individual with quite universal tastes in humour. I found "The Dictator" juvenile, pathetic and offensive. If this is what humour is these days then bring back the old days!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful comment on the circumstances of 1936 Spain, 1 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having only recently read Paul Preston's "The Spanish Holocaust" this DVD emphasised the sad circumstances surrounding events which led to the eventual Spanish Civil War and downfall of the Second Republic. The fear engendered by the Church and the Guardia Civil which caused the previously uncommitted villagers to turn against their neighbours and friends was palpable in the actions and dialogue of the film. And to see the young protagonist, Moncho, insulting his beloved "Profe" with epithets copied from his elders and so-called betters was very emotional. Splendidly filmed in a Galician town - well worth seeing.
