Embroideries
Embroideries

5.0 out of 5 stars Really funny - read it in a few hours!, 25 Jan. 2012
This review is from: Embroideries (Paperback)
Received and finished this on the same day! After reading 'Persepolis' and 'Chicken with plums' I have to say Embroideries lies closer to the latter in length. It's a short book, but keeps you gripped from start to end. I love how Satrapi keeps the same characters in every book, herself, and her hilariously blunt grandma. This book is centered around the 'tradition' of having friends and family round for tea, and the different conversation topics that come up, mainly marriage and general gossip! Overall, a fab read, but if you want a longer book, I suggesst you read 'Persepolis.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant portfolio - but it's not a toy, Amazon!, 14 Jan. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was shocked and really annoyed that Amazon have asked me to rate an Art product on its fun and educational value, gave it 5 stars on every aspect anyway, but aside from that this portfolio is great. For a start, after trying all my local Art and craft shops, this is the first one I've found that has a side carry handle and being only 5ft 2'' it's fair to say the shoulder strap was also a must needed feature! Obviously being A1, frankly, it's huge, and not the lightest thing in the world to carry, but I had no choice as the work I am using it for is A1 (study sheets from college, as I'm using it for transporting my work to interviews). It's very sturdy, as the 'chrome style' handle caps and corners show, and the ring binder mechanism contains 3 lots of 4 rings, so there are 12 metal rings for wallets to attach. There's also an outer zip-pocket and an inner sleeve to keep work in. The price is also one of the best I've seen, as I'd read bad reviews about cheap plastic ones which can break easily. The nylon material it's made from is good quality, and is wipe clean. Highly recommended.

Miranda - Series 2 [DVD]
Miranda - Series 2 [DVD]
Dvd ~ Miranda Hart
Price: £2.98

5.0 out of 5 stars What can I say? She's the Queen of comedy for a reason!, 14 Jan. 2012
This review is from: Miranda - Series 2 [DVD] (DVD)
It's fair to say I'm a big Miranda fan, I've got series 1 on DVD and her "Miranda Hart's Joke Shop" audio CD. Firstly, series 2 has to be equally as funny as series 1, if not better, and the special features are fab, with cast interviews led by Miranda herself on the parts they play, and an interview with Patricia Hodge (Penny) and Miranda's real life mum. It's also great that while characters from series 1 such as "Dream Boat Charlie" return, new ones are also introduced, such as Tilly's fiancee Rupert,Gary's friend from Thailand Tamara, and Miranda's dad, who makes an appearance in the Christmas episode. Overall, fans of Miranda won't need a detailed description of every episode, I don't want to spoil it, but fans who've only seen the first series will certainly not be disappointed!

The Art of Andy Warhol 2012 Wall Calendar (Calendar 16 Months)
The Art of Andy Warhol 2012 Wall Calendar (Calendar 16 Months)
by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts
Edition: Calendar

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant calendar for fans of Warhol!, 28 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love this calendar, and have put it up already, even though it's not new year yet! This calendar shows clear, bright images of Warhol's lesser known prints, and it should be noted that people expecting to see the "Marilyn" and Campbell's soup prints etc will be disappointed, but I'm glad to have seen some rarer works on this calendar. Each month displays a quote from Warhol, and there is space in each date to write, a perfect wall calendar size. It also comes with a huge A2 sized poster featuring a "Hamburger" print, which also has a quote on the reverse side. Overall, a lovely calendar for people wanting a "pop art" look for their wall!

5.0 out of 5 stars Short but sweet!, 10 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Chicken With Plums (Hardcover)
This arrived yesterday evening, and I've just finished reading it tonight, which is probably the quickest I've read a book in my life! After reading Persepolis, I was expecting something longer, but the quality in Satrapi's writing and unique illustrations are second to none. I won't give away too much of the story, but the book is based around the real life of Satrapi's uncle, who takes to his room to die after his beloved Tar is broken by his bitter wife. The book is divided into his final 8 days, and the flashbacks and memories that come to him during that time, which explain the depression he feels. The ending cleverly links back to the beginning of the book, and leaves the reader with a sad, but poignant feeling. A fab read.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you enjoy Downton, you must buy this book!!!, 3 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Firstly, I must say what a beautiful book this is, the glossy photos of the cast are stunning, and make you want to pick it up and have a good flick through straight away! Not only does this book contain quotes from the cast about their thoughts on the roles they play, but the book is split into chapters which cover historical content on war, society, fashion, the house & estate (not forgetting the real family that occupied Highclere castle)and much more besides. The book is well written, with a foreword by Jessica Fellows and extracts from the scripts. Overall, a fantastic book to compliment the TV series, would highly recommend.

Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood & The Story of a Return: v. 1 & v. 2

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read book!, 13 Oct. 2011

I am a self-confessed bookworm, but I can safely say I've never read a book like Persepolis. I bought this after watching the film, and being amazed by its humour, and artistic originality. The book has all this and more. Witty, funny and also moving, Marjane Satrapi's clever combination of illustration and text gives a unique "comic book" style. I was worried this wouldn't read like other books, but it does, and the story of the Iranian revolution is brilliantly told through a young girl's eyes as she grows up having to adjust as her surroundings do. Overall, a fantastic read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting from start to end!, 17 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Below Stairs (Paperback)
It's true what it says on the front cover of this book that people who enjoyed "Downton Abbey" and "Upstairs Downstairs" will love this book. It's a real life autobiography of Margaret Powell, a working class woman who grew up in a very poor area and was sent into domestic service to earn a wage to support her family. Not only does Powell tell her story with humour, but the detail which she describes conversations etc sounded like it only happened yesterday. A bit like listening to your nan talking about the war! Overall, this was a really interesting insight into the back-breaking work of a kitchen maid in a wealthy house, working her way up to the position of cook! I'm definitely reading the follow ups Powell wrote to this when they are published.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent photography guide!, 17 Sept. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought this as a reference book to help me with photography, as I am completely new to it and have just started an AS level in it. There are very clear colour photographs on nearly every page, which are really enjoyable to look at, and the writing itself is very clearly written and easy to understand. I like how it also shows a diagram of the parts to a SLR camera, explaining what they all do etc. Overall, I'd recommend this to any photography fan, novice or professional.
