5.0 out of 5 stars The Great Sousa's music and a good-as-it-got Hollywood telling of small bits of his story, 28 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An enjoyable movie to watch and listen to. Clifton Webb portrays John Philip Sousa as sympathetically as the screenplay allows him to do. Well worth seeing and hearing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good selection of Cahrlie Parker recordings, 28 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although the sound is rather muffled occasionally (live recordings from the sound of some at least), it is probably no worse than it would have been for listeners who were present some distance from the musicians in the original recording places. Well worth paying the modest price of this set. I have not had a chance to compare these tracks with their versions on other labels, but overall I'm very happy to have this set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Twenty of the very best of earlier George Shearing recordings, 28 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Beautifully remastered, these are gems, and in this compilation CD they sound even better than ever. Just to put a cherry on this lovely sundae, it's from bargain priced Naxos Jazz Legend series. I'm just so pleased to have and hear these examples of a very great pianist from his early prime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music of Nordic grandeur, played with spirit, vigour and commitment, 30 Jun. 2010
Thoroughly enjoyable performances by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's players who seem to find this composer's music as attractive as may many listeners. A bonus of reasonably generous playing time of the CD - over 70 minutes - and typically good
quality in recording - this is another fine bargain from Naxos, as the previous reviewer rightly noted - in fact, reading his enthusiastic, detailed, positive review encouraged me to buy the CD (thank you Mr Bryson).

For those who might wish to hear more of Svendsen's music, several folk song arrangements by him appear on the Naxos CD entitled "Scandanavian String Music". That disk includes also some very pleasant works by other composers, notably the Serenade of Dag Wiren.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CD generously filled with fine recordings of historical significance, 18 Jun. 2010
Nikolai Malko (1883 - 1961) was the experienced, respected Russian born conductor who was entrusted with directing the Philharmonia Orchestra for EMI's earliest stereophonic recording sessions. That he did so with considerable success is borne out by the excellent performances and recording quality of this CD. At this low price for some 80 minutes duration, it is a splendid bargain. Hopefully, EMI will reissue more, perhaps all of that company's recordings made under the direction of this fine conductor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Most Welcome DVD Release, 5 Jun. 2010

Footsteps In The Fog is all that the earlier reviewers have said in its praise. To the list of the film's strengths also may be added the wistful, hauntingly effective theme music, particularly 'Lily Watkins's Tune', composed by the splendid British composer Benjamin Frankel. That melody has stayed with me for over half a century since my first seeing the film.

Mario Lanza: Tenor in Exile
Mario Lanza: Tenor in Exile

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting work, 17 Jun. 2009
This biography of the famous tenor is most interesting in its detailed and clear explanations of the tangled business dealings which added to the complicated circumstances of Mario Lanza's life. The writer shrewdly identifies the collision of the relatively regular guy Freddy Cocozza with the superstar Mario Lanza as a basic cause of the confusion and unhappiness that contributed to his tragically destructive life style.
It is not essential to enjoyment in reading any book, including this one, to agree slavishly with all the conclusions reached by the author.

Christmas With [CASSETTE]
Christmas With [CASSETTE]

5.0 out of 5 stars A splendid way to celebrate Christmas, 29 May 2009
These recordings from the mid to late 1950s are all very well recorded and sung by Mario Lanza, a talented tenor with a most beautiful, rich voice, warm sincerity and commendably clear diction.

The performance of these Christmas carols and songs of faith and sentiment are likely to stand much rehearing to bring listeners a great deal of enjoyment. Please note if you would that there is also another recording, in the RCA "Living Stereo" series, containing re-recordings of much of this material, but made at a time when Mr Lanza was unwell (sadly, he died soon after) and also when the sound technicians seemed to be having a few off days. Ironically, that later series was promoted by makers and sellers (and still is) on the basis that it is in stereo, despite its having inferior sound quality to the earlier, then state of the art mono recordings contained in this currently reviewed CD. Good clear mono sound still beats not so good stereo.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Stuart Burrows Edition - A Great Singer, Well Represented, 20 Feb. 2007
This fine tenor is very well represented by this widely ranging selection of songs, ballads, lieder and arias from opera and operetta, brought together in this splendid release.

Whoever makes the decisions at Decca on re-released material is to be most warmly commended; he or she in this case has earned the gratitude of all lovers of good singing - and that of all lovers of a good bargain.

Very well done on all counts!
