4.0 out of 5 stars An intriguing read, 29 Jan 2006
This review is from: Fixing Shadows (Hardcover)
Fixing Shadows is a contemporary take on the Victorian novel. This is Susan Barrett’s first novel yet she is a master of both language and story-telling. Personally, I felt the book was more plot-led that character-led. At times I felt it hard to empathise with the characters and, on occasion, would have even made the criticism that they were flat and not fully rounded. However, as the novel progressed, I began to feel that this was completely intentional. I don’t believe Barratt wants you to empathise with any one character – the story works as a whole and is skilfully bought to a resolution. Very clever!

Summer's End

5.0 out of 5 stars Another beautifully crafted piece of work from Mary Ryan, 25 Oct 2004
This review is from: Summer's End (Hardcover)
I would urge anyone who enjoys an enthralling read to pick up a Mary Ryan book. I find her prose a joy to read. It is neither pompously verbose or patronisingly bland, it just seems to flow beautifully. As a reader I find myself totally drawn into the plot and characters. The finely tuned characters in particular, stay with you long after you've finished the book.
Summer's End is essentially a love story but it has an intense edge to it. The reader is first introduced to the characters in their childhood and then swept along on a journey that takes them right through their lives. Set in Ireand, London and Paris, you will care deeply about these people by the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book I've been waiting for., 17 Jan 2001
If you're interested in genealogy - this is the book you've been waiting for. It's clear, concise and very informative, written in an easy style which makes it easy and enjoyable to read. After reading several books on Genealogy, including many older ones from the library, this made a refreshing change, particularly as it is bang up to date with information on CD Roms, computer packages and internet sites. Herber manages to level the book in a way that it doesn't matter if you're a beginner or already someway into your research - this book will definitely be of help. Excellent!!
