5.0 out of 5 stars A High Quality Story for Children, Too Long Ignored, 22 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I first read this story when I was eight, fifty years ago: since, I've read t as a teacher to many classes of children of many ages and they've all thoroughly enjoyed it. In my view, it is one of the finest stories written for children I've ever encountered. It would make a superb, high-quality dramatised series for BBC television. Several years ago, tried to interest a publisher in such a project, but failed. He took the view that the story would be too difficult to modernise for today's reader. What claptrap! First, why should anyone want to modernise it? Second, was that the position he would have taken with CS Lewis' work? An opportunity missed.

This is one of Lewis' finest; which is saying something given the quality of his writing and the clarity of his insight.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Product, 20 Jan. 2013

It's all in there. The only irritating aspect for me is the tendency of the character's name to merge with the lines that he or she is given to speak.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gentle Humour To Biting Satire, 20 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
HH Munro writes in the comic style of Wodehouse and Waugh, but he is much sharper and satirical; at times, his humour can become quite dark - but he is wonderfully amusing. An author, i think, too little read these days.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Catholic, E-Book Version I Could Locate, 20 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a decently produced copy of the Catholic Bible and fairly easy to navigate: I wish it had been Anglicised instead of Americanised.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wisdom, 20 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
What you get from anything by CS Lewis is beautifully written, thought provoking wisdom from start to finish. and this is the best single collection of his work available. It would accompany me to a desert island. You can't seem to order it as a hardback from an ordinary high street bookstore any more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple & Profound, 20 Jan. 2013

Thomas a Kempis' book reaches down the centuries to remind us of the importance of humility: I quality sadly lacking in today's society. Simple and profound wisdom - (and very hard to put into practise).

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Children's Literature, 20 Jan. 2013

Enjoyable to adults, as is all great children's literature: Kenneth Grahame's immortal story in its original form can move the reader (or the listener) to tears or to laughter. In my thirty years of teaching, I read it to many classes of varying ages, and it always worked for them.

This review is from: The Ascent Of Man (Kindle Edition)
Like CS Lewis, Bronowski possesses the priceless talent of being able to make the complex simple. And, like CS Lewis, Bronowski produced his book to be used as a series of programmes, broadcast on the BBC - a circumstance that makes it seem to the reader as though he is being personally addressed. The finest account of Mankind's scientific, artistic and cultural development I've ever come across; the Ascent of Man remains as fresh and important and readable as it was forty years ago.
