Journey to the Centre of the Earth (Penguin Popular Classics)
Journey to the Centre of the Earth (Penguin Popular Classics)
by Jules Peabody Verne
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 stars, 4 July 2007
Verne captures real drama and human response in this fictitious masterpiece. It's a book for those who like the somewhat sureal adventure story. The plot thickens as the book progresses and i've read it twice in very different circumstances leading me to give it 4 stars. Firstly i read it one summer holiday in one big reading session as i really couldn't put it down, it was magic. The second time i read it on the bus on the way to work and found that having to read it on and off i didn't enjoyit nearly as much and found it hard to get back into. Not a book to read on and off from night to night in bed even but great if you've got a few hours to kill and you want to make the very mos of them.great book.

4.0 out of 5 stars got me through GCSE, 4 July 2007
i havn't got my results back for my English Lit GCSE but i'm quietly confident.I got an a star in the mock on the revision of this book alone as it goes into all the questions posed by golding throughout the ingenious novel. i've used numerous guides and helpers but this is one of the best i've used. All you need to know...could do with a few more concise quotes i'll give it 4.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 and a half stars.., 4 July 2007
This review is from: Lord of the Flies (Paperback)
Having studied the book for over 2 years now along with a few other greats; this is the only one i havn't got bored of in that time. The subplots linking to christ...the devil...and the underlying feature that adults are to blame for the boys downfall yet are relied on as future saviours mean that the book leaves you wanting more as we get a warped view on human kindness and the evil within us all.
Having written numerous essays on it i know the book better than most and as an avid reader it's still one of my all time favourites.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant cinema, 3 July 2007
If you like films that make you think (Memento, being john malcovich) you'll love Donnie Darko.

The acting matches the storyline in a movie you can't help but be fascinated don't have to be a genious to like this movie as even if you don't understand it you'll want to...and you'll love it.

i don't use words like classic...unless i'm talking about giants of cinema like scarface..clockwork orange or full metal jacket... but i would almost go as far to say as much about donnie darko. buy it;you will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars you might want to watch it more than once..., 3 July 2007
This review is from: Memento [2000] [DVD] (DVD)
Some people might be happy giving the film 4 or 5 stars just to pretend that the understood it all but with a very confusing ending it's not easy watching but is very well made cinema with good acting that you'll want to watch again...with a little rest first...because you can't swtich off watching the film but once you get into the swing of the backwards storyline it really is a good film that captures revenge for a murder and rape of the main characters partner deterred by lack of short term memory and the resultant need to write everything in note form so he will remember it later...

there are a few hitches but it's definately worth a watch...or two.

2.0 out of 5 stars teen horror flick, 3 July 2007
This review is from: Cabin Fever [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
Another director satisfied with producing average horror films destined for the dvd cabinet after one watch.

rent it...yes...maybe...for a film with your mates....simply for momentary skin crawlling moments.but...

Acting is poor and matches the plot in a sometimes farsical film that is good for the times you don't want to think about what your watching but i'd watch it with your partner because it's one way of inducing an early night.

4.0 out of 5 stars love or hate, 3 July 2007
This review is from: PI [DVD] [1999] (DVD)
you'll love this film if you like powerful, thought provoking cinema

Are interested in the human phsyci as it delves deep (in typical Gullete fashion) into the mind of a brilliant mathematician who like those before him plots his own demise through his thirst for knowledge that takes him beyond human limit.

im no mathematician and you don't need to be one to follow this film but yet it is gripping and chilling.

if you like other gullete films like "Requiem for a Dream," you'll love this one just as much.

4.0 out of 5 stars powerful..., 3 July 2007
This movie is touching, haunting and ultimately disturbing.

It tracks the perils of drugs from recreational use to diet pills and with no happy ending it is accurate.

It can be over the top at times but this simply adds to the film's powerful nature and it's definitely one of my favourite films.
