This review is from: Titanic (1943) (DVD)
It's a good movie, well crafted : First, graphically it's very enjoyable, every thing regarding the ship is amazing, the machinery, the stairs, ie, the sets are gorgeous. It's also valuable for the appearance of Sybille Schmitz, a rare actress, known for her part in the classical "Vampyr" (1932). Also Hans Nielsen deserves a special attention as officer Peterson. Compared to Cameron's film, which was more romantic and maybe dedicated to a younger audience, this seems more neutral, more authentic. All is said in few words, commands and love, almost elliptic ; characters are a bit strong underlined regarding the management, focusing on greed.

Sybille Schmitz was a extraordinary actress, and i hope someone will reedit "Fährman Maria" (1936), where she was at her best.

To get a glimpse of the general mood of this time, and the strong moral code in the marine, this movie is worth going for.

Edit : Miss Jolly Bohnert has a fine gipsy dancing part, with much fury and class. This was amazing.

i didn't enjoy it, i think the Red Mill was an attempt to achieve some suspens/ fear related matter, but it fails short. The Mill sequence reminds me Hitchcock' "Vertigo", so maybe this is the interesting point, but there is much outdated slapstick otherwise.

Marion Davies it shining in other movies like Little New York, The Patsy, maybe Show people witch i still have to watch...

It's a very good set of DVD, revealing the immense talent of E Lubitsch... I enjoyed also the score, witch is sublime, foremost in Ann Boleyn and Sumurum for example, while Liszt' Sonata is used to underline Sumrum's riot. It's fantastic.

As said Rouben Mamoulian, "You can have all the philosophy you like: if a film doesn't come across in graphic terms, it falls short.". But here you have both !

Some graphic sets could be related to german expressionism but not the general mood witch is full of joy of live, The relationship between the movies and the rest of cinema is complex, maybe Murnau was influenced also. The movies are a school of viewing for sure.
