5.0 out of 5 stars transends the medium..., 24 May 2006
A collage by Mark Romanek,a song by Trent Reznor,a performance by Johnny Cash.
Extraordinary.
More than the movie short, more than the lyric, more than the singer.
More than a filming of a song for commercial gain.
The whole excedes the parts - capturing the spirit of a lifetime of experiencea, understanding the essence of a lifetime of emotion in a few short moments.
A celebration of life's sadness and loss.
Imbued with the simple truth - material gains are nothing without health and spiritual wealth.
Uplifting.
Life affirming.
Reassurring.
Comforting.
So much more than sound and vision.
So much more than the sum of its parts...
...more ... much more than this.
Sparse.
Haunting.
Honest and true.
Deeply personal - universally understood
It transends the medium.
Out distances it by a long, long way.
It defines a life of pilgrimage.
A journey.
His journey.
And in a way...
...my life's journey...
your life's journey...
our life's journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars it must be love..........., 20 Nov. 2005

i had tried to mail this on several occassions - and it would have been posted earlier if not for ghosts in the machine...
i have been a collector of art, books, photographs, movies and music - popular culture for decades now.
i have an extensive collection - but keep a box of a dozen or so discs close to me most of the time.
essential listening i need like comfort food.
now in this box i have two peices of work by shearwater -"winged life" and "thieves" two masterful discs that are so closely connected it is criminal not to play both - one after the other.
hummm! - these two peices of art are magical, mysterious, musical realism - altogether - all at once.
sweeping cinemagraphics, widescreen soundscapes - malik and lean.
yet - enigmatic - lingering like the work of wong kar wai.
american folk, chamber rock, classic pop - label it as you will...
intimate, yearning, understated vocals - reluctantly extrovert.
juanting, jubilant, joyous guitars, fiddle, banjo, and keyboards.
bouyant precussion.
yeah - two timeless classics - all time greats
and to be so persistent with the posting - well it must be love.

5.0 out of 5 stars beyond the stars......, 30 Oct. 2005
listening to this I was taken to a field of 35 years ago - the Bath Blues Festival 1970 - santana immediately comes to mind - but then i've jumped decades - i'm with sonic youth, dinosaur jr. - spiritualised.
but this aint no retro glide - it's the dreamy sounds of tomorrow today.
timeless.
this ain't a CD that's gonna burn no house down - it's too slow a burn - but it sure has ignited my senses.
the man's haunting vocals - complimenting his sparse folky sound is compelling listening.
each track works for me and as a whole is CD is one glorious trip.
the inclusion and re-invention of Ray Davies "see my friend" is inspired.
yeah - this CD is one for those easy days - when there is nothing better to do than just lie back and enjoy a musician who has discovered and laid down the meaning of true beauty.
delicious.

5.0 out of 5 stars more than black and white............, 5 April 2005
More than a period piece.
More than cinema history.
A contemporary film - that just happened to be shot four decades ago.
From where I live it's a commentary on today.
Challenging and inspiring.
A tantalising and terrifying insight.
A moral tale of social injustice - it charts a series of
shorts - a bar-girl and expatriate playboys, tenant farmers and landed gentry ,student revoltionaries and corrupt establishment, political heroes and villans.
The lowlife contrasted with the highlife.
The exploiters and the exploited.
The haves,the would-haves and never-haves.
Intoxicating, enthralling - a sobering with a ,sometimes ,deliberately galling narrative.
Visually spectacular - mesmerising.
Compulsive.
Scintilating and stimulating.
It's a modern moral story........and it's closer than you think.
See it - believe it - it's the world you live in today.

This is a movie of rare emmotional depth and extreme beauty.
I am delighted with this DVD release as I wore out my VHS copy some time back.
A story of a romance - an affair - a love story.
An evocotive film that captures the need of love ~ the essence of desire ~ and the terms of engagement.
Three people in a search of love.
Three agendas explored.
The magic and loss.
The inevitable heartbreak.
Love's tradegy.
It captures fleeting passages in time ~ those elusive moments that linger ~tantalise.
A peroid piece of absolute delight charting a brief encounter.
A nostalgic film that fills you with deja vu.
Erotically charged ~ heart rendering ~it leaves you with a yearning~ a yearning for love.
the promise of love in a perfume's traces.

I was editing my recommendations when this title hit the screen.
HIPSWAY.
Wow - I first played this in the mid80's and for a long period it took pride of place in my collection alongside other favs of the time - Orange Juice and the Smiths.
It is a treasure that I love to dig up now and then and I am always pleasantly surprized how well it sounds.
Reading the reveiws here had me memory lipsyncing the lyrics, grinning like a fool, full of joy and well being.
This carried me through the 80's and for me today to listen to it is an uplifting experience.
It is a truly wonderful set of songs.
A desert island disc.
A treasure island disc.
Dig it.

I do not have the words to express the beauty of this set of songs.
It is a truly amazing collection - comparisons are, aptly, the tools of the less than eloquent - nick drake - shack come to me.
But there is no comparrison - I find this set of songs ethereal, enthralling, enchanting, mysterious, and haunting.
Hummmm - this guy is up there with all my other all time favourites - 60's dylan, hunky dory bowie, solid air martin, abraxas santana, early neil young, mazzy star, beth gibbons, blue nile, tindersticks, cocteaus, jeff buckley, smiths and first stone roses.
I gotta play this outta compulsion not choice - it is addictive - every replay is a deepening experience - affirming -
uplifting - magical.
Listening to it ascending-from good to great - it's gonna be the release of the year.
And for now one of my all time favourites.
