1.0 out of 5 stars Scam, 21 May 2015
This has to be a scam at this price, I get so frustrated that Amazon still permit these to be peddled. Avoid at all costs, it most definitely will not work and any positive reviews must be regarded with suspicion.

Jeanne Demessieux - Complete Organ Works
Jeanne Demessieux - Complete Organ Works
Dvd ~ Maxime Patel

5.0 out of 5 stars Jaw-dropping virtuosity, 5 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An astonishing feat of dexterity and performance. Your jaw will drop in astonishment at Patel's fabulous technique and his career as a concert pianist has paid dividends. A model of good posture throughout. The instrument rattles and washes its way around Waldsassen's basilika church and the photography and production are excellent. Worth it for the Etudes alone but made all the more satisfying by including some of Demessieux's lesser-known music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Decca at its best, 5 May 2015

Hold onto your horses for a thrill ride! Peerless engineering here which lets all the orchestral parts shine through. A particularly riveting Ruslan and Ludmilla and an equally exciting Prince Igor Overture. A classic of the gramophone era and one of Decca's finest productions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like wearing new specs, 5 May 2015

A revelation. The picture quality is superbly restored and the soundtrack seems to have had some polishing up. Some of the extras are exceedingly irritating though if that's your sort of thing. A quantum leap in quality over the DVD release.

5.0 out of 5 stars A handy guide, 5 May 2015

A wonderful compendium with some stunning photography to tempt you into these palaces of booze. Very nicely put together and you'll want to get started straight away, although Norfolk does seems to have something of a dearth of these places. If you have any friends abroad then they would love this book as a great introduction to the unique institution of the british pub.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but mind the score changes, 5 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent performance and recording by any standard. However, do be advised that the conductor has made one or two alterations to the score which don't necessarily improve it (and his quoted reasons are not that convincing). If you want it 'straight' then I'd recommend the Solti / Chicago version, a virtuoso orchestra on top form.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensible, 5 May 2015

A marvellous little compendium of some astounding preserved relics of a bygone age. The cover picture is of the interior of the Garden Gate in Leeds and, having recently visited it I can confidently say that no-one could be disappointed, it's an amazing palace of ceramics and a belting pint into the bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extravagant and enthralling, 5 May 2015
Magnificent. Worth it for the frightening Death Hunt from 'On Dangerous Ground' alone. A good cross-section of some of Hermann's more symphonic and, to some extent, experimental scores and containing some of the most extravagant orchestration imaginable (8 solo horns, VW brake drums, 12 harps, log drums, the list of kitchen-sink extras is huge). Admittedly it doesn't cover the Hitchcock movies but that's not a criticism when such fantastic playing and exemplary engineering are there. RCA in its heyday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure (Korn)Gold dust, 5 May 2015
Pure gold dust, if you'll excuse the pun. All of these discs are superbly engineered by the magician 'Wilkie' (Ken Wilkinson) and the playing is simply fantastic. The National Philharmonic consisted of the finest principals from all the major orchestras of the time and they revel in this music. Gerhardt is no slouch either, spending an inordinate amount of time preparing the scores and producing these wonderful suites. Unlike the original LP you might well be taken by surprise when the Ambrosian singers chime in with 'Strike for the shores of Dover' - I nearly fell off the chair! It's brilliant! Comparison with the later LSO / Previn collection reveals some significantly slower tempi and the recording is good, although no match for this masterpiece. If you like this one try the Bernard Hermann volume with its vicious Death Hunt, 8 solo horns braying like hungry wolves. All of these albums give a great balance between swooning strings and some pretty spectacular percussion writing.

Down and Out in Paris and London (Penguin Modern Classics)
Down and Out in Paris and London (Penguin Modern Classics)
by George Orwell
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.29

5.0 out of 5 stars Good enough to be read in one sitting., 5 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A surprising discovery, and read in one sitting, it was a very sobering experience. Nonetheless, Orwell paints a superb picture of the simple honesty and humility of those he describes and one has to ask 'has much of this really changed'? His, admittedly short, attempts at analysis are very interesting and just as valid as the day it was written.
