THE USUAL SLOOPY ERRORS IN RESEARCH, 4 April 2013
I have a major - or is that Lt Colonel - problem with research in military programmes and on this one there's a glaring error in the uniform of SS-Reichsfuhrer HIMMLER. In the scene where he being driven through Warsaw why is he wearing the old SS Black uniform with swastika armband that was phased out for the grey SS / SD uniform in 1938? I would imagine the Reichsfuhrer would have been the first in line to receive the new grey uniform when it was issued. Also on the cap of SS-Brigadefuhrer { Major General } STROOP the cap eagle badge looks like it was stuck on any old how at the last minute. If the SS was anything it was smartly turned out in uniforms. Why is it so that German uniforms, especially SS uniforms, are so often wrongly depicted in movies and TV series such as the 1978 'Holocaust' ? Is is because the Germans lost that they don't matter where accuracy is concerned?

FRANKIE HOWERD - CASANOVA, 17 Feb 2013
Frankie HOWERD was a very good comedian and I thought 'Up Pompeii' was a classic, however his attempts to go one better, as often happens, did not always match up. Tony HANCOCK was a perfectionist and always worried about being better than his last effort and in the end it caused him to drink himself to death in Australia in 1968. This HOWERD film is reasonable but not all that good compared to some of his other work.

ME AND MY SHADOWS, 17 Feb 2013
I am sixty years young. When my friends started listening to CCR in 1969 I 'discovered' Elvis PRESLEY and the fabulous artists of the 50's, such as Buddy HOLLY, Roy ORBISON and many others of that time. I have a very comprehensive vinyl collection, including double LPs of Eddie COCHRAN and Gene VINCENT. When I was a very 'young one' on the beach at Southport in Queensland I recall hearing a DJ in a shack play 'Apache' over the PA system and I liked the sound. I have come to love the simple, uncomplicated amazing talent of Cliff and the Shads and played cds of their music at my wedding in 2004. This CD has some variations on their classic tracks but that doesn't spoil anything. I believe their fans will still like it.

X - THE UNKNOWN: AN EARLY BLOB, 28 Jan 2012
This is a reasonable little b/w film concerning a shapeless radioactive monster that comes from under the earth in Scotland and absorbs people by burning them to death with radiation. If you have seen 'The Blob' you get an idea of it. In that film the monster was also formless however it absorbed its victims by flowing over them like jelly. I can imagine the makers of 'The Blob', which was later, had taken ideas from 'X-The Unknown'. The both films are worth having if you want a collection of 50's SF.

VISIONS OF THE HOLY LAND - VISIONS MAYBE BUT NO AUDIO, 23 Jan 2012
I must concur with the other writer who expressed annoyance at the absence of commentary. There is NO audio and just pictures, what you might expect from back in the days of the old film cameras that produced film but no sound. I cannot commend this DVD due to its irritating lack of dialogue that would explain what you're seeing.

POSSIBLE IRA INVOLVEMENT?, 10 Jan 2012
I admit I have not yet seen this DVD but it attracted my attention as I have always had an idea the IRA were involved. As an Irish side point I remember the late great Dave ALLEN and his sketch on the Titanic. he was sitting at a table and asked the waiter for some ice for his drink. Just then the 'berg came through the side of the ship and the waiter picked a small piece of the table and dropped it in Dave's drink. As to the IRA the ship was built and launched in Ireland in 1912 and what better way for the IRA to strike at British imperial pride than to put a bomb on board that could be later detonated by one of the many Irish passengers travelling with the 'lower class'? Could there have been suicide bombers all those years before Islamic terrorists thought of the idea? Why not?

THE DVD DOCUMENTARY THE TOWER { OF LONDON }, 3 Aug 2011
It's a good programme overall but I find it annoying there is still an inference that 'wicked uncle' Richard of Gloucester { Richard 111 } murdered his nephews, the so called 'Princes in The Tower' in 1483. There has been no proof of this and multiple suspects with motives, including Henry Tudor and Henry Stafford, second Duke of Buckingham. I for one do not believe Richard was guilty of the deaths of the boys nor, as implied by Shakespeare, of Henry V1 at the tower. Henry was put to death on order of Edward 1V after the Yorkist victory at Tewkesbury in 1471. Richard, in Shakespeare's play, causes the death also of his brother Clarence in 1483 - George was excecuted on the order of Edward in 1478 for Treason and both the deaths of Henry V1 and George are on record as under Edward's order. I refer people interested to the fictional but very well written story 'Daughter of Time' by Josephine TEY, in which an injured policeman spends his time in hospital reviewing the evidence against Richard. I also mention the televised 'trial' of Richard on the crime of murder, which I believe was done on UK Channel 4. I visited the Tower of London in 1987 and was pleased to hear the slanders against the very valiant and capable last Yorkist King were not mentioned. It seems, however, the undercurrents of whisper and backstairs inuendo are on the rise again. Having had my little White Rose partisan whinge, the two disk documentary on The Tower is very well presented and informative.

HISTORY OF BRITAIN, 4 April 2011
I purchased a set of these DVDs for my wife, who is a teacher. I found no problem with the content and it is well presented however the labels and the disks were mismatched, with the last two labelled disks each having the programmes for the other disk. I didn't bother returning them to the UK as each disk in the set played without any problem. I just had to make labels for the two end disks and mark them with the alternate number. Check that this problem has not arisen on any other box sets of this programme. Roger DESHON, Toowoomba Australia

CLASSIC CHRISTIE, 16 Jan 2011
As one who enjoys a good 'whodunnit' I borrowed two of these movies when they were available fom a DVD library and enjoyed them very much. I also incidentally enjoy peter USTINOV as Poirot, much better in the role than David SUCHET. Anyway, I found that the four Margaret RUTHERFORD films were available on DVD as a set and I thoroughly re-commend them to anyone who appreciates the Miss MARPLE stories.

Poor Bloody Britain-, 16 Jan 2011
This is not a bad programme but it falls down with the annoying puppets simulating people. Also I would prefer to have seen the programmes chronologically set down, as did Simon Schama with his History of Britain........start with the earliest event first on disk one.
