Souriez, vous êtes en Tunisie !
Souriez, vous êtes en Tunisie !
by Habib Selmi
Edition: Paperback
Price: £13.87

5.0 out of 5 stars SMILE, YOU ARE IN TUNISIA! - BEFITTING THE SOCIO-CULTURAL MOOD OF THE MAGHREB AND MIDDLE EAST, 11 Nov. 2014
This is a novel I would eagerly, happily, readily translate into English as Habib Selmi captures the mindset of the contemporary Tunisien male adroitly.

Although it features a Tunisian and French cast of characters and references, they are in fact universal archetypes throughout the Middle East, the Levant and the Maghreb. You could substitute any other nationality from Turk, Kurd through Beiruti Arab and be exactly true to the socio-cutural and religious hypocracies of our pre and post Arab Spring 'Muslim' culture - prior to the barbaric downward spiral into the extreme violence of ISIS/ISIL, the IS group.

The 'freres' or 'brothers' of the Muslim Brotherhood are just in view, coming from the edge towards the centre in their self-appointed guise of moral keepers of the 'faithful'.

Family life, the boredom of housebound, veiled women as opposed to their liberal sisters and the increasing threat to female freedoms are excellently and lightly drawn. The title is ironic - there is not much to smile about aside from fleeting smiles given and taken between men and women with many attendant risks.

5.0 out of 5 stars The final series of 3 leaves some of the mystery behind it, 4 Aug. 2013

This review is from: Mad Dogs - Series 3 [DVD] (DVD)
All three series are quite different owing to the change of locations as the story evolves. The character development in the final part is well handled with the usual high quality of acting and direction.

All three can be watched over and again and reveal a little more each time. One of the best series in a long while. Laddish jokes and characterisation make the series a man's watch as well as a woman's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blanford is one of the best commentators on Lebanon, 4 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Hezbollah's role in Lebanon and beyond Lebanon's borders requires an in-depth analysis of this kind.

Blanford's style makes his subject matter more accessible than some earlier books on Hezbollah.

Read all Blanford's work on Lebanon and feel the place come through his words - a Lebanon we love and which needs a deeper understanding of all its complexity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Varied, passionate, reaches the heart beyond language, 4 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Subliminal (Audio CD)
One of the best albums of the year, even if you are not a Francophone speaker, the emotion in most of the songs is directly accessible. African influences come through with resonance.

Maire Gims exceeds the 'rap' label in some break-taking vocals. An album to be played over and over again. The hit song Je m'tire is powerfully rendered and the message coming through Ou est ton arme? as an anti war song with images of the senseless waste of war is well handled.

Maire Gims has a hauntingly beautiful but masculine voice - arousing!

Farewell to Dejla: Stories of Iraqi Jews at Home and in Exile
Farewell to Dejla: Stories of Iraqi Jews at Home and in Exile
by Tova Murad Sadka
Edition: Paperback
Price: £13.50

5.0 out of 5 stars Visual, personal, living history of the last Jews of Iraq, 2 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A moving and visual account of the last times of the Jews in Iraq, one of Iraq's oldest communities. The story also highlights how when Iraqi Jews reached Israel they were regarded as second class by the European Jews and suffered great societal and economic hardships.

A very easy, fast moving read. Highly recommended.

Lost quarters of Old Baghdad re-illuminated.

Enemy of the State: The Trial and Execution of Saddam Hussein
Enemy of the State: The Trial and Execution of Saddam Hussein
by Michael A. Newton
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars AMERICO-CENTRIC PERSPECTIVES, 2 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Interesting insider details of the trial and pre-trial period of Saddam Hussein are set forth in American English that is not of a high literary standard and uses a lot of idiomatic Americanisms.

The political standpoint appears highly supportive of the US-led intervention in Iraq and some of its "accomplishments" including the pre-trial assistance but asserts that the responsibility and trial achievement itself was that of the Iraqis.

A period now eclipsed by the sectarian violence since the capture and execution of Saddam and the errors of marginalising the Sunnis in favour of the Shi'a and the Kurds leading to profound new problems in Iraq.

The creators, writers, producers and actors all managed to accomplish something that gets under our skin and throws us into space - the unknown spaced between daily life and death - mysterious, raunchy, like a book one can't put down. Leaves you tingling. Recommend to all.

Iraq: Then & Now: A Guide to the Country and Its People (Bradt Travel Guide)
by Karen Dabrowska
Edition: Paperback
Price: £15.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Putting Iraq back in the picture with full perspective, 11 Mar. 2013

I congratulate my colleague, Karen Dabrowska and her co-authors for getting this book off the ground. Couldn't be better in getting a deep sense of Iraq through the millenia.

One day Iraq may be open again to the wolrd without its culture being utterly destroyed before that day dawns. In the meantime, this book is about as good as it gets.

A triumph!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's go back to Baghdad but when, 11 Mar. 2013

The map is there, Baghdad is there but post 2003 regime change Iraq doesn't make for travelling there any easier than under Saddam, alas.

At least we have the map to the past and hopefully, one day the future, to use it and for Baghdad to be a safer place to return to beyond just memory and the imagined future equal to its great history.
