5.0 out of 5 stars Very impressive system for carrying bikes, 23 Feb. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I must admit I was highly sceptical whether this SeaSucker Talon could actually take the weight of a bike and hold it as well as a conventional bike rack.

Everything came in small pieces in the box but the instructions on how it all fitted together were clear. There was even a spare sucker in case one stopped working, though I can't really see this happening.

Putting the device together for the first time took a while, about 10-15 minutes to figure out and I wasn't sure how much time it would take to fit to the car. But once I got going it only took another 10 minutes to fit with the pump making sure that the suction cups were connected properly and a really useful and clear guide on each sucker that shows just how much suction it has (which took most of my worries about bikes flying off away).

Once on, fitting the bike involved removing the front wheel. which wasn't an issue for the adult bikes, but trying it with my daughter's bike was harder work (again, not an issue for this product, more for the bike) so it's worth noting that you need to be able to do this. The back wheel simply sits on the last sucker at the back in a purpose built gap which also has a strap for securing the frame.

It was clear that the bike wasn't going anywhere and I made an effort to pull and push to see the flexibility but it stayed quite still. Driving along, there was no feeling that the bike was waving around on the roof. I haven't tried it on the back of the car yet, but that might be the next step as it's easier to get the bike back off than from our fairly high car roof.

Overall, then, a very impressive solution to carrying around a bike without fiddling with racks that can harm the seals or body of the car.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for some cooking but not powerful enough for everything., 23 Feb. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This hotplate is ideal for portable heating or to use as an extra hob plate when cooking large dinners.

The white outer area looks good in a kitchen and is sturdy. thanks to 4 rubber feet that keep it in place. It is slightly larger than I anticipated, though. There is a knob on the front which has an incremental dial for setting the right heat and an LED to show that the device is on. That's all there is to the design, simple and workable.

When on it takes a while to heat up and even on full power it's no match for a gas hob. We tried several items on this and some worked better than others. Soup worked well but stir fry and Paella were no-go because it just didn't provide enough heat on the max setting for frying, which is a shame. However, as a portable heater for camping or at work when we do charity events it's a great tool that isn't too heavy and is easy to carry around to cook soups and then keep them hot.

So it's useful depending on what you want it for. Things that require more heat won't really benefit from this hotplate (and, to be fair, it's not really designed for that), but for anything that just needs a simmer or slow boil it's perfect.

Igenix IG9508 Portable 2 Bar Quartz Halogen Heater 800 W - White
Igenix IG9508 Portable 2 Bar Quartz Halogen Heater 800 W - White
Price: £14.99

4.0 out of 5 stars A good heater but grill gets very hot., 23 Feb. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
If standard central heating isn't enough for certain spots in your house or you need instant heat for a room then this 2 bar heater is a good portable solution which can be packed away when not in use.

The heater is fairly basic in design, a plastic white frame with a metal grill on the front, 2 large heating elements and 2 switches at the bottom. Out of the box it's ready to go, short of pressing in the 2 feet that go at the back of the device to stand it up. Just plug in and switch on one or both of the 400W/800W switches.

It does heat up within about 15 seconds and you can certainly feel the difference, even on a single bar. Surprisingly, looking at my digital meter reading, the electricity used wasn't that much more, so the efficiency claims seem to be at least partially true. With 2 bars the heater really gets going and I'd be worried about keeping this near to anything that could possibly melt.

Which comes on to my only issue with this device. It's something that's probably true of most of these 2 bar heaters, but there's no safety guard of any kind, bar the wire mesh which, in itself, gets far too hot to touch. If you have kids or a pet that might touch the wire then there could be a risk of burning, not to mention the possibility for materials to get burnt. That said, it does have a cut off if the machine falls over, which worked well when I tested it (though it took a while for the heater to cool down.

Overall, though, you usually know what you're getting with these heaters and this is surprisingly fast to heat up and works well without using too much of your electricity bill, so still comes recommended.

Oral-B Pro 3000 White and Clean Electric Rechargeable Toothbrush Powered by Braun
Oral-B Pro 3000 White and Clean Electric Rechargeable Toothbrush Powered by Braun

5.0 out of 5 stars A great middle-ground brush with some handy features., 20 Feb. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The Oral B Pro 3000 sits somewhere in the middle of the Oral B range, above the basic brushes which just clean, but not so grand as to have a digital display or 6 different brush functions.

The box comes with the brush base, 4 heads (3 different types), a long cable and charger and a wide base to stand the brush on. The base has a small gap in the back to feed the lead through in order to recharge it standing up.

The brush itself is very plasticy looking when compared to the more expensive brushes but this also means that it's easily washable. The front has a rubberised blue coating, a charge and battery indicator at the bottom and a power switch at the top.

After a first charge the brush is ready to go. Simply slot one of the brush heads on to the brush and press the on switch. The brush will start in standard 'Daily Clean' mode and will stutter at 30 seconds intervals to tell you to move on to the next quarter of your mouth. After 2 minutes there will be a longer stutter to tell you that you're done. It's a good system that works well and is used in the higher models along with a screen to provide a visual representation, but this does the job just as well.

In addition to the timer there is an light indicator to warn that you are brushing too hard, which is excellent for those who put too much pressure on their teeth without knowing it. My eldest daughter is going to be using this and the timer and gum indicator are perfect for her.

After a long charge (overnight and through the day, so about 21 hours) my daughter used the brush and found it easy to use. She wanted to use the lower setting so had to get used to pressing the power button three times (once for on and then twice more to cycle through to the right setting) but soon got used to it. Her teeth did look visably whiter than just using a non-electric toothbrush and she found that she brushed for a bit longer than before, thanks to the timer.

Overall, this is a great option for those who want some of the features of the top models but don't want to pay double the price or fancy the digital display part of the kit. It's a perfect middle ground with enough features to make it worthwhile and certainly great for older children who want to start using a proper electric toothbrush, as well as adults who need different brush styles.

Fresh 'n Rebel Wireless Bluetooth Selfie Stick
Fresh 'n Rebel Wireless Bluetooth Selfie Stick
Price: £19.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well for iPhone and Android, not so much for Windows Phone, 18 Feb. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Selfies, where you use a phone or other device to take a picture of yourself (along with anyone else), are all the rage at the moment but sometimes it's difficult to get the right angle and focus while stretching your arm right out as far as it will go.

Enter the Fresh 'n Rebel Selfie Stick, which aims to help take the perfect Selfie. The device is basically a long extending arm with a clamp on one end to hold the phone and a bluetooth button on the handle to take the picture.

The outer box is shaped like a milk carton, which made me chuckle, and inside you get the stick, the phone holder (which needs to be screwed in) and a short USB lead. A very small instruction booklet is also included and it recommends charging the stick up fully before use, though the stick itself comes charged in the box. Fitting the phone holder was fairly easy, you simply screw it on to the top of the stick. The clamp that allows you to keep the phone holder angled in a certain position was a little harder to undo, being very stiff, but eventually I managed to get it pointing at an angle.

The base of the stick is a nice rubber material that is easy to grip, while the extendable arm is made of metal and looks like a thick radio aerial, using the same idea to extend its length. Even at its shorted length it isn't going to be easy to carry around in anything smaller than a rucksack, though.

Sliding the phone in (I've used both an iPhone 5 and a Nokia Lumia 625 for this test) was easy enough and just involved clamping them down. Then just connect the Bluetooth up on the phone and put the phone in camera mode ready to take a picture. Then hold the stick to the position you want, looking at the screen to see your picture, and press the button located at the top of the black rubber handle.

Picture quality will be down to the phone and how steady you can keep your hand while holding the stick, but test runs with the iPhone have been pretty good so far, being able to take a Selfie on a crowded street from above and indoors. My 10 year old managed to take a few herself easily, as well.

Testing with the Lumia caused an issue. The camera app didn't seem to recognise the button on the stick. Downloading a Selfie app from the Windows store helped but it's sadly not compatible out of the box.

If you own an Android or iPhone, though, and take a lot of Selfies then this could be an ideal tool for you, but only if you're prepared to lug it around in a bag.

Philips HR1832/01 Viva Collection Compact Juicer, 1.5 Litre, 500 Watt - Black
Philips HR1832/01 Viva Collection Compact Juicer, 1.5 Litre, 500 Watt - Black
Price: £39.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A great small juicer, 16 Feb. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I was quite surprised by how small this juicer was, especially after seeing the size of the box. The HR1832/01 looks neat on our kitchen workspace, with the black and clear plastic making it look smart and still remaining easy to see what is going on inside each part.

The machine itself is really easy to use. Simply put fruit (pealed for hard or thick skinned fruit) in the top, hold the long plunger-like lid down to help it go through the blades and watch it separate out the juice from the pulp really quickly as you turn it on. Finally, the juice comes out through a tap, which can be turned 90 degrees to stop it dripping when you finish. It really is that simple to use, which is lucky because the instruction booklet has very little help,

Washing the device is just as easy. It comes apart in bits so you can just wash the top if several people want different juices, without worrying about the part that holds the pulp. All but the part with the mains plug can be put in a dishwasher or sink and seems to wash easily, making this ideal for daily use if you have a busy lifestyle.

The small form factor, ease of use and end result impressed me enough to keep using the device on a daily basis in place of cartons of juice.

Dr KittyCat is Ready to Rescue: Posy the Puppy
Dr KittyCat is Ready to Rescue: Posy the Puppy
by Jane Clarke
Edition: Paperback
Price: £4.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice story but very purple., 16 Feb. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Dr KittyCat is certainly an interesting book. It's aimed at a youngish audience somewhere between 5-8 years old, in a paperback book size but with colourful illustrations and glossy paper.

The illustrations are a mix of photographs of animals and sketch-like purple drawings around them. My 8 year old daughter found them entertaining, though and loved coming across the next one every time she turned the page.

The story itself is easy enough for an average 8 year old to read themselves, though it is quite long and does contain basic medical advice. In that way it's actually a little educational as well, especially for those who already have animals at home or an interest in animals.

The style means that this book isn't for everyone and the pictures can be a little girly, but my girls both loved the story and the illustrations.

AmiGami Giraffe Figure
AmiGami Giraffe Figure

4.0 out of 5 stars Great arty fun for kids, 15 Feb. 2015
This review is from: AmiGami Giraffe Figure (Toy)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A mix of art, origami and cute animals, AmiGami is a great idea to keep the kids busy and provide a nice looking end product that can be used again and again.

The box comes with a character in the plastic packaging, in this case a giraffe, some tools and plastic pins and paper cutout shapes and stickers in the cardboard backing. Getting the backing off can be a bit of a pain, making sure that you don't rip the paper shapes.

Once opened, though, AmiGami is really easy for kids to use. You can stick stickers on the body, including several sets of eyes, and place the shapes in the holes dotted around the body, using really nice looking pins (not sharp ones, I hasten to add). Long strips can be curled as well to create interesting new shapes.

My 8 year old had no problem putting something together in 10 minutes or so, then taking it apart to try again with a different design. It really is easy to create great looking designs.

Overall, we're really happy with this set and may get some more of the animals to try out and form our own AmiGami zoo!

Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner - 5 g, N1 Black
Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner - 5 g, N1 Black

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality black eyeliner, 9 Feb. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
After a few Revlon products that didn't quite live up to their billing, we're thankfully back to one that does. The ColourStay Eyeliner is a great product.

This eyeliner looks simplistic from the outside, but the twist-to-reveal pencil tip is a great idea, complimented by the easy to use sharpener in the lid and a smudging tool on the other end of the lid. It works well in practice, too, with a thin line making it suitable for detail to be applied or using the rubber-like smudge tool for a wider effect. The black colour is dark and almost jet black in colour, making it stand out with firm lines.

My wife used this in the morning several times and by evening it was still intact, though she found that it can be easily smudged (though this is part of the design I guess). So gets full marks for staying power as well as looks and application.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bold and glossy lips, just watch out for the kissing!, 9 Feb. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is an interesting mix of lipstick and stain in a pretty bright colour.

The packaging is very attractive and mixes well with top end beauty products. It twists open to reveal a small brush applicator for the stain.

The colour itself (Parisian Pink) is very noticeable, a dark and deep pink, and certainly won't suit everyone. My wife wasn't quite sure whether it would suit her, but tried it anyway for the day to see how it looked, applied and how long it would last.

Applying the stain is very easy using the supplied brush and was easy to apply an even amount over the lips. It's perhaps not quite as easy to apply as lipstick but does end up looking shinier and produces a fuller lip look.

During the day it didn't fade but I certainly noticed that it came off when she kissed my kids, much to their amusement, so it's worth noting that it can easily be 'transferred' to skin or clothes. That said, it didn't seem to diminish the effect on the lips themselves and by the end of the day they were still looking good and still shiny.

The Colourstain Parisian Pink won't be to everyone's taste, both in colour and application, but it seems like another quality product from Revlon and certainly makes a statement.
