4.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good read, 23 Dec. 2014

I was not at all sure what to expect from this, but it turned out to be thoroughly entertaining. A brutally honest, heartwarming, surprising account of a young woman making her own way in the world. Her conviction is admirable, but also I love the fact that she is so honest about the hardships, both emotional and practical, that we all have to deal with regardless of what we choose do with our lives. Really inspirational reading, a push to be more authentic to oneself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Worthwhile Read, Thanks Michael!, 2 Sept. 2012

I really liked this book, the advice is useful and most importantly very practical, but the book still has that human aspect to it that makes it entertaining and relatable - Tefula doesn't pretend to be the perfect student, admitting his own faults throughout the book (eg. Sometimes wanting to stay in bed rather than going to lectures!). This makes the idea of getting a first seem much more achievable, as you realise that you don't need to be a robot to implement his strategies. Likewise he puts a lot of emphasis on the need to get balance in all areas of your life at uni, and the fact that you don't need to live in the library and have 0 social life to do well.

Very motivational and encouraging to read, I feel much clearer about what I need to do to get a first now, and much more confident in my ability to actually achieve one.

Really brilliant planner, helps keep everything organised, I wouldn't be without one at uni. Only bad thing is that the boxes are fairly small, but that goes for any A5 planner really!

I have just finished working through this book and now feel much more prepared for university study, and aware of what will be expected of me. The book effectively clarifies what critical thinking is and how it is used in academic reading, writing and note-taking.
I like the fact that the book has lots of activities and tests for you to complete, so that you aren't just being bombarded by lots of information. Instead, you're constantly being required to check that you understand what's being said, and therefore you're much more likely to remember it all.
The book does often include more words than are necessary, but it's easy enough to skip over those parts.
I'd strongly recommend this book to anyone about to start university study.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading, 17 Sept. 2011

If you're a student who already has a pretty good awareness of how you learn best, and effective methods of revising worked out, then this book isn't going to be that ground-breaking for you. If you aren't, it could very well revolutionise how you study!

It gives you a sense of confidence in your own abilities, and it would be worth reading just for that, as attitude and confidence play such a huge part in how successful you are in your work.

Parts of it I really liked, and i've no doubt that i'll be going back to it a few times over the course of my degree. The section about reflective study journals was something new, and sounds like it could be a useful idea. The section on planning and writing essays will also, I think, come in handy in the future.

I'd definitely recommend this to anyone about to start a degree course, who is maybe a bit unsure about the whole thing and wants a book that will clarify the situation and give confidence, as well as genuinely useful advice.
