Lamaze Play & Grow Freddie the Firefly
Lamaze Play & Grow Freddie the Firefly
Price: 6.49

5.0 out of 5 stars Well priced popular baby gift., 15 Dec 2013

The Lamaze series are particularly well designed for new babies I understand; black and white on one side, which the newborn can focus upon. The crackling noise is apparently something a new baby likes. Have bought several of the series for newbies and feedback from parents is very positive; seems the little ones really take to these little gifts. Supplied at a very competitive price, delivered quickly. Would use again.

I thoroughly recommend this product - especially if you have smallish garden and don't want to produce a huge crop of anything.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you like French's style....., 28 Aug 2013

This review is from: Dear Fatty (Kindle Edition)
you will like this innovative way of recalling significant people, places and events that have formed her values and guided her career. Always underpinned with French's self mocking humour which is a joy to read of course but in the written word this reader began to ask if this was not sometimes a way of brushing aside unwanted negatives feelings, like anger and sadness.

She is self revealing but deftly maintains the boundaries that protect others in her life, who she counts as precious; she is less coy about those who have been less than loyal and protective to her.

Funny, honest, sometimes a little too keen to insist the reader knows how at home she is with her sexuality perhaps - but always entertaining. And let's face it she is a great entertainer. Of course as our paths have sometimes followed similar routes (literally) her references to Plymouth, Cornwall, a number of RAF stations and St Dunstans' Abbey, might mean I am a tad biased. I could be echoing her frantic attempts to impress her adolescent crushes - except I never fancied Davey Jones. Would have given Hugh Grant a go though if he had played his cards right. On the other hand, the solace she finds on the shoreline of Rock is something I won't mock or dismiss, as French the Entertainer. Right there with you sister - it never fails me and I have known that place since I was a wee thing :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Clare Balding please write some more., 13 July 2013

This is first of all funny but it is also touching. Clare is the child who never quite understands the human world; and the adults in her life offered little guidance, sometimes appearing as children themselves masquerading as grown ups. The animals were less complicated and less confusing as their natures were far more discernable for the little Clare. Through some painful experiences retold with humour and the innocence of the child's mind Clare recalls the significant events of her formative years whilst at the same time giving the reader an insight into the world of top class racing. Anchored around the animals that peppered this life, Clare helps us to see them as characters with individual needs of their own. Her relationships with the animals are often challenging but never dull. Pretty well the same as Clare's relationship with the human world from HM the Queen downwards. Readers will surely see something of themselves, even if the reader's response to the world may have been rather more acceptable than Clare reports her as.

As a child Clare lives in something of a social no mans land - somewhere at the lower end of the "well-bred" privileged classes. Clare doesn't fit in with them much better than she fits with the children of her local school. Throughout the telling Clare describes a comic and often hysterically funny childhood that has that, can't put down, affect on the reader. Essentially humourous but there is a subtext there for the more insightful reader. Write some more Clare - purleese.

..... rather like the lady herself.

Ferguson writes in a journalistic style and works to provide a balance to counter some of the myths that surround the Thatcher years. Perhaps most thought provoking is the pointing up of her anti establishment stance; this is something those of on the left probably resist recognising. The fact that her policies both saved the nation and released much of the greed commonly expressed by those who have never known what it means to have disposable income is recorded without moral judgement and is the chief theme of Ferguson's assessment. An enlightening read for those with rather mixed views on Mrs T but no doubt those with rather more entrenched positions for and against Thatcher will resent, counter and deny the evidence Ferguson claims in support of his evaluation. A good read if a little polemical - but most of what is written about Mrs T is polemical as far as I experience.

a light read for anyone interested in social history. I enjoyed it because I find the recording and change to social mores interesting but not at any depth. The level of this book suited me. Pick up and put down as you like; you won't lose the thread. A useful background for those writing about Victorian life among women whose class status left them somewhere between the drudgery of the working classes and the management responsibilities of running a large establishment. I read it on my Kindle; I don't think I would want it cluttering up my bookshelf.
