1.0 out of 5 stars do NOT buy this version if wanting to watch in 2D, 23 Jun 2012
Have had to abandon watching this on our 2D blueray player as from scene 4 it starts jumping. Having looked at other reviews, it seems this is a common problem so buyer beware - go for the DVD version

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect for icey conditions, 12 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have just bought a pair of these to use (amongst other things) on the school run and have tested them out on some serious compacted ice & snow - they work a treat! I am a lady's size 7 and wore these over hiking boots. They go on very easily, the rubber bands fitting snugly over the toe & heal. There is a velcro strap over the top of the foot which holds them securely in place (one of the 1 star reviews seems to relate to an older version which doesn't have the velcro strap).

The grips have 9 spikes at the front which are moulded into the front piece so will not come out (as some similar products seem to). The back has kinda metal springs around the rubber straps for extra stability.

They really do hold you, even on steep slopes and give the confidence to step out in the iciest conditions. They feel slightly strange if you are walking on clear paths and I think too much of this could wear the spikes slightly but time will tell. for £10 these are thoroughly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars good quality, neat design, 22 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this as a gift and was lucky to get it on Amazon for just over £40 (Dec 2011). The rack was very well packed with lots of card between the jars to keep everything protected. The herbs & spices provided (see below) all came in foil packets thus keeping them fresh until received.

The base is stainless steel, with 2 stainless rods within each carousel and a plastic handle and plastic cradles for the jars. It is very stable on the work top and the jars sit firmly in their holders, whilst being easy to remove. Each jar is glass with a plastic top which unscrews easily for topping up the contents. The black tops twist to "sprinkle" or "pour" but would need removing to use a spoon.

The following herbs & spices are provided (some more useful than others!). I only used a few and replaced the rest with those that I felt the recipient would use more. You are provided with a set of pabels in either English or French (I think!). This is what you get (all the herbs are freeze dried):

Marjoram
Chive
Basil
Sea Salt
Rosemary
Dill
Parsley
Ginger powder
Chilli flakes
Fennel seeds
Coriander seeds
ginger (very strange dried lumps, skin n all)
cinnamon powder
bay leaves (ground)
celery seeds
thyme

3.0 out of 5 stars good picture - poor quality pieces, 12 Jan 2011
= Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought for my jigsaw addict 4 year old son for Christmas. Picture was nice & bold with good level of detail to keep him interested. Unfortunately many of the pieces were bent making it very difficult to keep the puzzle together. Other pieces were split at the edges. Amazon refunded without quibble but disappointed that this should have been allowed through the manufacturer's quality control process.

3.0 out of 5 stars doesn't fit back in the box!, 26 Dec 2010
= Durability:2.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Hungry Hungry Hippos (Toy)
am not going to comment on the play quality of this game as I think we all know what it does and that it's basically noisy fun, but I do want to warn potential purchasers about a major flaw in the design - the game does not fit back in the box!!

Basically the box is the same size as the blue square play arena so when you put it all together with the hippos bottoms sticking out it no longer fits in the box. It is not as if it comes apart easily, in fact i gave up trying for fear of snapping something. So we are left with a game containing small balls sitting loose in the cupboard - need I say more!

very silly design, leading to iminent loss of marbles for the game and for parents!

4.0 out of 5 stars good for the money, 26 Dec 2010

these were a christmas present for my 7 yr old football mad son who since the world cup has started learning many of the flags and was keen to have a set to use when re-enacting international games.

well it would be safe to say that these were one of his favourite presents. all the countries appear to be present and whilst I haven't checked them over for accuracy nothing obvious sticks out.

Quality wise, well you get what you pay for here. each flag is on quite thin nylon which seems to have a slight heat welded edge, as having given them a rub they do not seem to want to fray which is obviously a very good thing. They have been cut from a sheet of many different flags and the accuracy of the edges does leave something to be desired with a 1-2mm strip of green on the edge of the england flag for example.

In summary for under 40p per flag they are good value and just what my little boy was after - he will have lots of fun playing with them when they are not decorating the playroom and will learn plenty at the same time.

5.0 out of 5 stars good reference book as an introduction to the suject, 22 Oct 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As my 6 year old had just got into rocks & fossils, I wanted to buy him a book on the subject, so initially bought the DK book "Rock & Fossil Hunter"; this however, is more an activity book so I bought this Usborne book also. It is much more what I was looking for and provides a really good introduction to the subject.

There are 6 chapters:
Rock Spotting - which covers how & where to find rocks in the country, at the beach and in towns & gardens
The Restless Earth - an introduction to the make up of the earth, weatehr, volcanoes etc
Rocks - explanation of the different types (igneous, sedimentary etc with allustrations of examples)
Minerals - lists & illustrations of the main rock forming minerals, precious & semi-precious gems & ores
Fossils - how they are formed, fossil fuels etc plus illusrtrations of main types.
Rock COllecting - how to collect, treat & display your finds

In conclusion this is THE book to go for as an introduction and having just flicked through it again, i can see it will be a well used refernce book for years to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars good book with lots of activities, 22 Oct 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
my 6 year old has recenly got into rocks and fossils so I wanted to buy him a book on the subject. I looked at 2 books- this one and the Usborne Naturetrail book "Rocks & Fossils". I chose to buy this DK book but have since bought the other one as well since I did not feel that this was comprehensive enough. This book does have one very good element - it has fold out wipe clean covers showing over 100 different rocks and fossils and the places you are likely to find them so is a good guide to take out with you to help identify your finds, but is is mainly an activity book. There are about 23 different activites & experiments to try at home and when out & about which does not leave much room for information about the rocks themsleves and how they are created. This is where the Usborne book coems in (see my review of that book on its own page).

In conclusion, if you want a reference book, buy the Usborne book first. This does however make a very good companion to it and would be a good buy for some school holiday activities.

4.0 out of 5 stars great for more complex runs, 22 Oct 2009
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
My 6 year old received the basic run for his birthday and it was soon commandeered by his 3 year old brother, so when his birthday came round, we put this set on his wish list. It has not disappointed and he spends many minutes (he is only 3!) playing with it. We join the 2 sets which gives even more options but this set alone has plenty of pieces. It does take an adult's eye to set up and can be a little unstable but once you have got it togetehr the runs you can create are really pretty good. There are some nice interesting pieces such as a "wiggle", a wheel and a drop through plate which add to the fun. What I hoped for was a piece with a 2 way exit to give some randomness but it doesn't come with that.

I would make 2 recommendations: 1) buy some extra marbles straight away as we lost most of ours under furntiure and in the garden within a week & 2) set it up on a hard surface as the slopes are quite subtle and the marbles can get stuck if the levels are not right (and if your child starts pressing down on it to free a stuck marble the whole thing tends to collapse!)

All in all a good set and I'm sure as he gets older he will be able to build the runs himself.
