1.0 out of 5 stars 5-star film! appalling re-released blu ray!, 1 Feb 2014
the one star isn't for the film as the film is an absolute masterpiece of filmmaking and easily deserves 5 stars.

the one star is for the poor blu ray re-release. firstly the picture quality isn't amaingly good. there is still lots of dirt and flecks over the whole image as well as a lot of softness which looks like it comes from a very poor source (i know it's an old film but this film has looked far better in the past)

the big reason for the one star is the fact that studiocanal have removed all of the extras and audio options from the disk and all you get is the film and a scene selection. their previous release at least made up for the poor image with a host of great extras. what we have now is a expensive re-release that is far inferior to the previous release..

in my view they shouldn't be able to get away with this. Its not worth the money! - if you want the film on blu ray get the digipack version with the black cover or if you have a multi region player, get the american release....

(on another note, i beleive that the rereleases of the other studiocanal films like elephant man will also have all of the extras removed as they were released around the same time..)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best films in recent years, 1 Dec 2013
'Only God Forgives' seems to have received very mixed reviews since it's release and I believe one of those reasons is how it was marketed.

the original marketing material painted the film as a revenge thriller that revolved around Ryan Gosling's character who ran a gym. It would have been easy to believe that the movie would be a violent action packed thriller with the brutality of the director's previous film 'Drive'.

This way of thinking really does 'Only God Forgives' no justice at all.

What we have is a powerful character study that is as achingly beautiful as it is stunningly emotional. Many have comment that there isn't much dialogue, but this is why the film works on a far greater level then almost all other films made in recent years. It knows when to show and not tell, which is arguably what film is meant to do.

Every shot in the film could be a photograph and every note of music is as perfect as scores can be. The main `fight' in the film is so beautiful that it really feels like a dance between two different generations, both believing that they are doing what is right.

For me this film is as close to perfect as cinema can be and I truly believe that it is a film that should be experienced.

I understand that many will not agree with me, but for all those that don't I'm hoping that an equal number will. This film may not be as action packed as their previous film 'drive' but in my view it is a far more accomplished piece of cinematic genius....

I truly love this film and cannot truly express how stunning an achievement it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars stunning movie, 14 Oct 2013

the best way I can describe the film is a like a feature length 'twilight zone' episode directed by david lynch. the whole film has that semi-dream like mystery that lynch manages to create in his films while also haveing that weirdness and that chcarcter driven story that made 'the twilight zone' so popular.

but of course this film isn't directed by david lycnh, but by the great actor 'Thomas Jane'. It was his directorial feature debut and it is amazing. if i hadn't known, i wouldn't have thought it was his first film directing as it really does have a lot of polish. Thomas jane also acts in the film and he is just as good as ever. Bearing in mnd the majority of the film is just two people in a car its amazing how compelling the film is.

being a fan of Thomas Jane I've wanted to see this film for a while but it just hasn't been released in the UK.

this french blu ray is the next best thing. the picture quality is brilliant although at times does highlight the limitations to the tny budget they were working at (especially some bad CGI at the end) the blu ray also contains FORCED french subtitles which were slightly annoying, but considring this is the only way to get the film on blu ray i can live with it and they're not too distracting.

there is a nice english commentry on the disk as well as quite a nice behind the scenes feature.

if you can live with the french subtitles I cannot reccomend this enough...........

1.0 out of 5 stars great series but heavily edited and censored dvd and blu ray, 29 Sep 2013
I love the idea of the show and the execution and rate it really highly but the actual uk disks are censored really badly.

now don't get e wrong there is still a lot of swearing and violence but they have masked a lot with shadows and smoke that were never there in the true original japanese release. even the intro is censored and masked with shadow that was never there in the first place....

after looking into it. it seems that manga entertainment never even submitted the full version to the bbfc for rating and instead settled for the sub-par version...

for most people they may not care but when i know that this has been done to a series for no good reason (bearing in mind the disks are still 18's) I just feel cheated..

5.0 out of 5 stars stunning film, great blu ray, 24 Aug 2013
my thoughts on the film, followed by a small bit about the disk:

`Spring Breakers' is an interesting film as it is actually far more thought provoking than the trailers would suggest. The film opens with 5 minutes of T&A and party music. This for me is when the film is at its weakest. It makes the film feel juvenile and teen orientated from the outset, which it's not (no matter how hard it tries). After this sequence we get a couple of other similar sequences segmented throughout the films runtime but never quite as `in-your-face' (well not quite).

What we have for the rest of the runtime is a study of 4 girls getting in over their heads with sex and drugs and their downward descent into the darkness these things bring.

A lot has been said about the fact that 2 former Disney starlets (Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez) are in the film. But to be fair you kind of forget this fact as they (and the other girls) all play their characters really well. Gomez is easily the weakest of all of them but still gets the job done. James Franco also has to be praised for his portrayal of a drugs/arms dealer. He is amazing and is easily steals the screen from the girls when he is around.

I would say that the four central girls all feel quite 2 dimensional and similar. It would be difficult to truly explain each of their personalities as (other than Gomez's character) we never really see them in any other environment. In any other film I think this would be really bad but here it kind of works.

I think it is helped by the fact that we're thrown straight into the overpowering nature of spring break along with them and have very little time to think about such things.

The music and the visuals are amazing throughout the film and both help create a stunningly overpowering feast for the mind. There is always something to see or hear and at times it's a true sensory overload. But it works. The film is about this kind culture and how easily it is to get lost in the sights and sounds. The movie works perfectly on this front and it really helps draw you into the picture.

the film looks and sounds amazing on blu ray and although I'd say not as stunning as seeing it at cinema, comes a very close second. the extras on the disk cover the usual behind the scenes work and a commentry by the director (who at times really doesn't know what to say)... the disk is missing a few extras from the american disk but we do gain a few new ones, so i guess it balances out..

i love creature films and thought that a book listing and giving small reviews would be a good idea.

I was wrong. the book is written by someone that seems to know very little about the films he's writing about. At times it feels like he hasn't even watched the films and has just stolen reviews off IMDB and information off wikipedia. He is also missing so many films from the book, again leading to me believeing he just pulled a random list off a website and just typed a little text to go with them...

its a real shame as there is a market for a good book about creature features but this is definitely not it.....

1.0 out of 5 stars really fun film but awful disk!!!, 24 July 2013
the film was a great bit of fun and i really enjoyed it both at the cinema and on this blu ray. it's got everything you could relly hope for from a big action blockbuster and the acting is generally pretty good.

the reason for my 1 star review is the fact that, as another reviewer stated. the blu ray contains different extras to the dvd menaing that on the blu ray you are missing 3 making of featurettes and an audio commentry by the director.

If you are not worried about extras then bump the star rating up to 4 as the picture qaulity and sound are great as are the extras that are on the disk. I just don't agree with them stripping extras off of a more expensive product when you can simply buy the americna disk and get everything.....

4.0 out of 5 stars the natural successor to tenchu, 23 Feb 2012
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
first off i don't know why this has been getting lowish scores from critics:

it has really good graphics
it has fun stealth combat
it has a deep almost rpg like managment system
it has lots of missions
it has fun combat
etc etc...

It may not be as polished as things like uncharted or ninja gaiden sigma, but then it didnt have as much money pumped into it. what it lacks in polish it makes up for in stealth gameplay, echoing the old tenchu games from ps1 and ps2. There are a wide variety of missions from assassinations, to collection missions, to recon missions etc... As stated above the game also features a deep inventory and levelling up system which is fun to get lost in for hours.

thats not to say everything is perfect. there are a few ai issues and aa few control issues. but nothing really effects the fun of sneaking up on someone in the middle of a castle and killing them without alerting anyone.

as i have said, its much like tenchu and anyone who like those games should enjoy this. the game is also perfect for anyone who likes stealth, ninjas, samurai, japan, anime etc etc.

overall i think this is a great launch title and is unlike anything else currently on the market.......

i highly reccomend.... 8/10

5.0 out of 5 stars far better than expected - utterly engrossing, 31 July 2011
This review is from: Jack Hunter (Box Set) [DVD] (DVD)
i approached this set with caution as it does clearly look like a rip off of indiana jones, but let me get this out of the way, it is pretty much nothing like indy...

the only real similarities are:

1.) in the first and third parts our hero 'Jack Hunter' wears a beige shirt and fedora
2.) Jack hunter is a treasure hunter
3.) he is trying to stop someone getting a mythical object that contains great power.

and that's pretty much where i'd say the similarities end. for me while watching the films i never felt like it was like indy. if anything it feels more like a more grown up version of something like 'national treasure'. at heart it is a classic adventure film where clues lead them all over turkey and syria.

of course, the films were made for televison on a budget nowhere near as large as hollywood films, but for me this meant that they didn't rely on constant special effects and explosions. thye also never try and do anything that they know they can't do in terms of budgetry constraints. they never aim too high and as such it works better for that very reason.

I also found the writing to be actually pretty good for tv films. usually it all feels so fake and forced. in this i personally felt that they pulled it off. I got drawn into the story and really enjoyed all three of the films. i also felt that the ending to the final film was perfect for what had come before.

all of the actors involved perform brillinatly and even the 'annoying' sidekick these films always seem to feature, isn't that annoying.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this series of films to anyone who enjoys adevture films with a little bit of thinking involved.

BTW: it was far, far superior to the fourth indiana jones film in my view. at least in this series they don't blow up a fridge with a nuclear explosion and there are no cgi monkeys!

Snakes ( Mankind Has Found A New Enemy )
Snakes ( Mankind Has Found A New Enemy )

1.0 out of 5 stars Snakes. AKA: Python 2 - Phillip Roth gives us yet another giant snake movie! but this one has no bomb defusing snake : (, 24 April 2010
Let me begin by explaining who Phillip Roth is who is mentioned in my heading. He is the producer of this film as well as being producer of numerous other 'giant snake' films such as Python, Basilisk: The Serpent King (not quite a snake, but a giant snake shaped dragon) and Boa vs Python (which I have yet to see. He seems to have a passion for working on films which feature these giant reptiles. Boy, he even directed Boa (AKA: New Alcatraz). I enjoyed Python and kind of enjoyed Basilisk. I had slightly different feeling towards Boa due to it's inept story and pacing but still enjoyed it for an hilarious turn from Dean Cain and an ending which makes no real sense. As such I was holding out a bit of hope for this film.

Enough about the producer and onto the film.

The film is actually the sequel to the film Python which starred Casper van Dean and Robert Englund. This is mentioned nowhere on the box of the dvd which calls the film 'Snakes: Mankind has found a new enemy'. This new title appears nowhere on any film sites or even in the film. i only discovered it was the same film when looking at Phillip Roth's name on the box. The film also only features ONE snake and not the aformentioned 'Snakes' which implies multiple snakes.

I digress.

The film semi continues on from the previous Python film. I say semi as it is only really a sequel in both it's original name and the fact that William Zabka reprises his role from the first film. He is possibly the only good thing about this film. Where the original film proved to be amusing for almost it's entire run time (mainly due to the wonderful Robert Englund), this one fell apart in the opening moments. Gone are the amusing one liners, the bad acent put on by Casper Van Dean, the bomb defussing snake that is a master of disguise (yes you read that right 'BOMB DEFUSING'.) What we are left with is a boring 'Ten Little Indians' like story of a commando unit trying to capture an 85 foot snake that is running loose in a Russian military base.

The only thing worse than the opening action sequence that features the same soldiers dying repeatedly is what the film quickly digresses into. The acting was awful, I wasn't expecting anything otehr than hammy performances but boy i didn't even get that. In my opinion a small hamster sitting on a stationary piece of jam covered toast would deliver a better and more compelling acting performance than most of the actors in the film. William Zabka is the only person that i actually enjoed watching in the film. But it isn't just the acting. It's the special effects and the way they are thought out. The snake in the first film looked bad, but as you got into the film it was kind of believable. in this film it just looks like a metallic snake made with cgi.

I have to mention the fact that this 85FT snake manages to come out of a box whichg is about 6FT long. unless this snake is a magician it just isn't possible. Where does the other 59FT of the snake go? I know as you are reading this you may say; 'but it's a movie about a giant snake, it isn't meant to be believable.' I agree to a certain extent but when itis that unbelievable i'm just annoyed. no matter how hard you try you cannot fit an 85Ft snake in a box less than a tenth of it's size.

Sorry for the rambling.

When i watched this with some friends, none of us enjoyed it. one friend fell asleep, i started imagining a better film and my other friend just seemed like he wanted to cry.

I conclude by saying that even if you love giant sanke films DO NOT watch this film. It ahs almost no redeeming features. If anything, save your money and watch a small bird sitting in a tree or just go to the nearest zoo and look at a real snake. Although that snake may not be 85FT long, i can assure you that it is more plausible and would be far more enjoyable than this film. Another good option is to watch the first film numerous times just to see the wonderful bomb defusing snake in action.

I would love to own a bomb defusing snake! I wish they ahd just made this film about the snake's amazing skills. I dunno maybe they could make a film whree the snake becomes a sheriff and defusses bombs? It would make the film a lot more enjoyable.

I thank you for reading and bid you farewell. (I'm off to watch the first film again.)
