This review is from: Oculus (Paperback)
The author ‘LUKE MELIA’ knows the story he wants to tell and confidently tells it throughout the 200+ pages of his second graphic tale ‘OCULUS’.

The story concerns Shane during his first week working for the Major Crimes Department in the familiar but futuristic city of New Oxford. Set during 2027 the world that is presented is one where technology has progressed to the point where an individual can broadcast what they see live over a worldwide network similar to the internet. With this new and exciting technology comes both good and bad and it is the MCD’s job to help cut down on the bad and to keep the general populace safe.

Even though the story is about Shane it also is a study into the evolution of the ‘Oculus’ and how it changes the lives of every citizen in the city. The ‘Oculus’ works very much as its own character throughout the story even though it becomes like a plot device allowing almost anything to be seen. The idea is near perfect and the story flows stunningly well, taking us through all manner of subjects and genres. The story at its heart is a detective story and in this it also excels due to the constantly twisting story that takes the reader on a fascinating journey and keeps you wondering what’s coming next.

All in all I think that this book is an even more confident stride forwards in terms of this creative team and one that I feel should be experienced by anyone who likes a good story with some deep characters and an incredibly carefully put together world. It’s fair to say that I really enjoyed the book and would easily but it in my top ten comics I have read I quite a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, stunning and breathtaking!, 29 April 2015

Rarely do I read a book completely blind of what it is about, but this had me intrigued by the title and the stark, striking cover. I had also never heard of the author before so had no idea what I would get.

What I did get was a phenomenally deep and complex study of the intricacies of the human condition presented in an amazingly easy to read and follow story. I won't spoil the story for anyone as watching it unravel in front of your eyes is one of the many pleasures of the book. What I will say about the story is that it is incredibly dark and at times pretty twisted. But these points only help reveal the darkness that is inside the human mind. Never did I feel that anything was particularly out of place or un-justified.

As a piece of fiction I find it pretty hard to fault. It moves at a brisk pace and keeps you reading until the very end. Each of the characters are fully fledged out and all have reason for being there. each has their own issues they are fighting and each helps drive the story forwards through some highly unexpected ground.

The art is equally as brilliant as each issue/chapter is by a different artist thus helping with the almost dreamlike state that the book creates. I will say that some of the art is stronger then others in my view but at the same time I loved all of it and thought that each reflected the situation that the chapters presented in a perfect way.

The book stayed with me long after reading and made me think about a lot of things about the human mind and conditions that some individuals go through. It had a power that I rarely experience when reading books, let alone graphic novels. I am still shocked at how amazing the book was and how I had never heard of it before.

All credit to the creative team for doing such an amazing job and a special credit to 'Luke Melia' who I believe could easily become the next best thing in comic writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars best wrestling game in a long time....., 4 Dec. 2014
This review is from: WWE 2K15 (PS4) (Video Game)
i was highly hesitant to buy this after reading reviews and after actually paying the game at Eurogamer and not enjoying it. What finally made me get it was watching a video of 'Sting' (the wrestler, not the singer from 'the police') playing it on IGN and it looked pretty fun. So i gave in....

I am so happy I did as i really do find it fun. I've been working through the 2k showcase which is pretty well done and focuses on the clashes between 'john cena, CM punk' , and 'Shawn Michaels, Triple H'. it's much like the older games in that you get extra unlocks for achieving certain specifics in the matches like performing a finisher at a certain point. Its a great laugh and is genuinely fun to play.

The controls are smooth and for once the counter system works most of the time (which i had issue with in previous games). most of the animations are smooth and at times the combination of the great smooth gameplay and the pretty good graphics made it convincing. The graphics for the most part are great with some wrestlers looking stunning (like ultimate warrior), sure some of the incidental characters aren't as good but the wrestlers themselves on the most part are great.

the single matches are also great fun with some classic match types (although there is stuff missing which i'll mention shortly). AI is pretty good although they do sometimes get stuck against turnbuckles and such like.

multiplayer with a friend online is hilarious. yes there is a bit of lag which can make countering and kicking out of pins awkward, but it's by no means game breaking. it's pretty easy to get used to the timings and within 5 minutes I found it was pretty straight forward.

with everything that works well, there are some issues that potential buyers should be aware of:

1.) the list of match types that you can play is pretty limited and annoying in the fact that certian ones can only be played 1v1,2v2 etc. for example there is no option as far as i know for a 1v1 ladder match or a 1v1 table match. some matches such as inferno have been taken out completely which doesn't bother me too much but i still would have been nice to have the option to play them. Another confusing thing is the fact that some match types like casket matches are in 2k showcase but not selectable as a single match type !?!

2.) although the graphics are highly improved there are still tons of hilarious glitches such as wrestlers sinking into the floor, chairs flying across the screen after getting stuck in a corner etc. But for me they just add more enjoyment into the game.

3.) there doesn't seem to be a royal rumble match type online.... this for me was gutting as royal rumbles online with friends were always awesome. but here it doesn't seem to be included. you can play it single player but unfortunately nowhere else.

4.) although the create a wrestler mode is quite extensive in customising the chacrters, there are very few options when it comes to ring entrances and music. the older games featured options to select some character entrances from the likes of jeff hardy, now although you can make him (with his moveset) you can't seem to create a convincing intro.

5.) I'd have liked the option to be a few more classic wrestlers from the attitude era like lita, the dudleys, edge, the hardys. but this is just a personal thing ...

My issues with the game really do not affect how enjoyable the game is . It plays well and looks great. All the problems could be fixed through patching so I'm not too concerned.

all in all I'd say that this is by far my favourite wrestling title since smackdown on ps1 (well at least the ps4 version is) and it really doesn't deserve all of the bad press it's getting. I'd say if you enjoy wrestling and are up for a laugh this could be the game you've been looking for.

1.0 out of 5 stars 5-star film! appalling re-released blu ray!, 1 Feb. 2014
the one star isn't for the film as the film is an absolute masterpiece of filmmaking and easily deserves 5 stars.

the one star is for the poor blu ray re-release. firstly the picture quality isn't amaingly good. there is still lots of dirt and flecks over the whole image as well as a lot of softness which looks like it comes from a very poor source (i know it's an old film but this film has looked far better in the past)

the big reason for the one star is the fact that studiocanal have removed all of the extras and audio options from the disk and all you get is the film and a scene selection. their previous release at least made up for the poor image with a host of great extras. what we have now is a expensive re-release that is far inferior to the previous release..

in my view they shouldn't be able to get away with this. Its not worth the money! - if you want the film on blu ray get the digipack version with the black cover or if you have a multi region player, get the american release....

(on another note, i beleive that the rereleases of the other studiocanal films like elephant man will also have all of the extras removed as they were released around the same time..)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best films in recent years, 1 Dec. 2013
'Only God Forgives' seems to have received very mixed reviews since it's release and I believe one of those reasons is how it was marketed.

the original marketing material painted the film as a revenge thriller that revolved around Ryan Gosling's character who ran a gym. It would have been easy to believe that the movie would be a violent action packed thriller with the brutality of the director's previous film 'Drive'.

This way of thinking really does 'Only God Forgives' no justice at all.

What we have is a powerful character study that is as achingly beautiful as it is stunningly emotional. Many have comment that there isn't much dialogue, but this is why the film works on a far greater level then almost all other films made in recent years. It knows when to show and not tell, which is arguably what film is meant to do.

Every shot in the film could be a photograph and every note of music is as perfect as scores can be. The main `fight' in the film is so beautiful that it really feels like a dance between two different generations, both believing that they are doing what is right.

For me this film is as close to perfect as cinema can be and I truly believe that it is a film that should be experienced.

I understand that many will not agree with me, but for all those that don't I'm hoping that an equal number will. This film may not be as action packed as their previous film 'drive' but in my view it is a far more accomplished piece of cinematic genius....

I truly love this film and cannot truly express how stunning an achievement it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars stunning movie, 14 Oct. 2013

the best way I can describe the film is a like a feature length 'twilight zone' episode directed by david lynch. the whole film has that semi-dream like mystery that lynch manages to create in his films while also haveing that weirdness and that chcarcter driven story that made 'the twilight zone' so popular.

but of course this film isn't directed by david lycnh, but by the great actor 'Thomas Jane'. It was his directorial feature debut and it is amazing. if i hadn't known, i wouldn't have thought it was his first film directing as it really does have a lot of polish. Thomas jane also acts in the film and he is just as good as ever. Bearing in mnd the majority of the film is just two people in a car its amazing how compelling the film is.

being a fan of Thomas Jane I've wanted to see this film for a while but it just hasn't been released in the UK.

this french blu ray is the next best thing. the picture quality is brilliant although at times does highlight the limitations to the tny budget they were working at (especially some bad CGI at the end) the blu ray also contains FORCED french subtitles which were slightly annoying, but considring this is the only way to get the film on blu ray i can live with it and they're not too distracting.

there is a nice english commentry on the disk as well as quite a nice behind the scenes feature.

if you can live with the french subtitles I cannot reccomend this enough...........

1.0 out of 5 stars great series but heavily edited and censored dvd and blu ray, 29 Sept. 2013
I love the idea of the show and the execution and rate it really highly but the actual uk disks are censored really badly.

now don't get e wrong there is still a lot of swearing and violence but they have masked a lot with shadows and smoke that were never there in the true original japanese release. even the intro is censored and masked with shadow that was never there in the first place....

after looking into it. it seems that manga entertainment never even submitted the full version to the bbfc for rating and instead settled for the sub-par version...

for most people they may not care but when i know that this has been done to a series for no good reason (bearing in mind the disks are still 18's) I just feel cheated..

5.0 out of 5 stars stunning film, great blu ray, 24 Aug. 2013
my thoughts on the film, followed by a small bit about the disk:

`Spring Breakers' is an interesting film as it is actually far more thought provoking than the trailers would suggest. The film opens with 5 minutes of T&A and party music. This for me is when the film is at its weakest. It makes the film feel juvenile and teen orientated from the outset, which it's not (no matter how hard it tries). After this sequence we get a couple of other similar sequences segmented throughout the films runtime but never quite as `in-your-face' (well not quite).

What we have for the rest of the runtime is a study of 4 girls getting in over their heads with sex and drugs and their downward descent into the darkness these things bring.

A lot has been said about the fact that 2 former Disney starlets (Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez) are in the film. But to be fair you kind of forget this fact as they (and the other girls) all play their characters really well. Gomez is easily the weakest of all of them but still gets the job done. James Franco also has to be praised for his portrayal of a drugs/arms dealer. He is amazing and is easily steals the screen from the girls when he is around.

I would say that the four central girls all feel quite 2 dimensional and similar. It would be difficult to truly explain each of their personalities as (other than Gomez's character) we never really see them in any other environment. In any other film I think this would be really bad but here it kind of works.

I think it is helped by the fact that we're thrown straight into the overpowering nature of spring break along with them and have very little time to think about such things.

The music and the visuals are amazing throughout the film and both help create a stunningly overpowering feast for the mind. There is always something to see or hear and at times it's a true sensory overload. But it works. The film is about this kind culture and how easily it is to get lost in the sights and sounds. The movie works perfectly on this front and it really helps draw you into the picture.

the film looks and sounds amazing on blu ray and although I'd say not as stunning as seeing it at cinema, comes a very close second. the extras on the disk cover the usual behind the scenes work and a commentry by the director (who at times really doesn't know what to say)... the disk is missing a few extras from the american disk but we do gain a few new ones, so i guess it balances out..

i love creature films and thought that a book listing and giving small reviews would be a good idea.

I was wrong. the book is written by someone that seems to know very little about the films he's writing about. At times it feels like he hasn't even watched the films and has just stolen reviews off IMDB and information off wikipedia. He is also missing so many films from the book, again leading to me believeing he just pulled a random list off a website and just typed a little text to go with them...

its a real shame as there is a market for a good book about creature features but this is definitely not it.....

1.0 out of 5 stars really fun film but awful disk!!!, 24 July 2013
the film was a great bit of fun and i really enjoyed it both at the cinema and on this blu ray. it's got everything you could relly hope for from a big action blockbuster and the acting is generally pretty good.

the reason for my 1 star review is the fact that, as another reviewer stated. the blu ray contains different extras to the dvd menaing that on the blu ray you are missing 3 making of featurettes and an audio commentry by the director.

If you are not worried about extras then bump the star rating up to 4 as the picture qaulity and sound are great as are the extras that are on the disk. I just don't agree with them stripping extras off of a more expensive product when you can simply buy the americna disk and get everything.....
